Samsung’s current logo is a distinctive wordmark: the company name in a carefully balanced letterform, usually shown in Samsung Blue. The three stars belong to earlier versions, while the familiar white lettering inside a blue oval was a major historical form. The logo’s evolution tracks a shift from a star-based identity to a simpler mark designed for recognition across markets and media.

What does “Samsung” mean?

Samsung explains its name as meaning “three stars.” Its brand-history account links the stars to the founder’s ambition for the company to become bright, strong and enduring. That meaning belongs to the company’s name and earlier visual identity; the current wordmark does not contain three stars. Samsung’s heritage account is the source for this symbolic explanation.

Samsung and Samsung Electronics have different starting dates

Samsung’s corporate story begins on March 1, 1938, when Lee Byung-chull founded a grocery-trading business. Samsung Electronics, the technology company most people associate with the logo today, was established in 1969. These dates describe different milestones, not competing accounts of one founding. Samsung’s corporate history records the 1938 origin, and Samsung Design’s history of 1969–1992 covers the later electronics company.

From early star marks to a global identity

Early Samsung branding used Korean and English lettering and star imagery. Historical marks should not be treated as one unchanged logo used uniformly across every business: Samsung operated in different fields, and versions could vary by subsidiary, product, market and period. The firmest milestone is Samsung’s statement that earlier logos featured three stars until 1993.

In March 1993, Samsung developed a unified corporate identity as part of a broader effort to build a global brand. The familiar result was white “Samsung” lettering set inside a blue oval. This transition accompanied a more internationally oriented company; it was not simply a cosmetic swap of one symbol for another. Samsung’s design history for 1993–2004 describes the period’s design strategy, while its 2013 corporate profile identifies the March 1993 unified-identity milestone. Samsung later called 1996 its “Year of Design Revolution,” reflecting design’s growing strategic role.

Why the blue oval became recognizable

The oval gave the name a strong, repeatable silhouette. White lettering against blue offered clear contrast, and the enclosing shape helped the mark stand out on products, packaging, signage and advertising. Its simple outline was also easy to recognize at a distance. These are practical design readings of the form; Samsung’s cited heritage materials establish the blue oval as a historical logo, but do not confirm that it officially symbolized the universe, infinity or global reach. Such claims should be treated as interpretation, not documented company meaning.

Why Samsung removed the oval

Samsung says it later simplified the mark by removing the oval and changing the lettering to Samsung Blue as the company pursued global leadership in the digital era. Samsung’s heritage account documents that change. From a design perspective, dropping the enclosure gives the name more flexibility: it can sit on varied product surfaces and screen layouts without requiring a blue container, and it gives the lettering greater emphasis. Those are reasonable effects of the change, rather than a claim that Samsung listed each as its official rationale. Older products and archival material can still display the oval.

The 2005 refinement and today’s lettermark

Samsung’s official logo guidance identifies 2005 as the year of refinements that produced the current lettermark design. Samsung describes adjustments to visibility and visual balance, including the spacing and height of the letters and how the eye perceives visual cues. The mark is therefore a wordmark—not an abstract icon, and not simply the company name typed in an ordinary font. Its letterforms and proportions are deliberate. Samsung describes the refined form as having a contemporary look and feel. Samsung’s logo guidance also gives its color specifications and usage principles.

Samsung’s current official identity centers on this simplified lettermark. The oval remains a recognizable legacy form, often seen on older televisions and appliances, vintage electronics, archived advertising and sponsorship photographs. Its presence on a product or image does not mean it is the current primary logo. Nor should the current mark be dated solely to 2015: Samsung’s official logo page identifies 2005 as the lettermark refinement, while its design-history site uses 2015 as the start of a later period in its broader design timeline.

What Samsung Blue communicates

Samsung describes its blue as an iconic brand color since 1993 and associates it with technology, innovation and consumer trust. That is Samsung’s stated brand meaning, not a universal rule about how every viewer responds to blue. The company specifies the color as follows:

Samsung, Galaxy and One UI are not the same identity

The Samsung wordmark identifies the company. Galaxy is a product-family identity for Samsung’s mobile and connected-device ecosystem, with its own visual system. One UI and product icons belong to the interface and product experience; they do not replace the corporate logo. Samsung discusses Galaxy’s distinct visual identity in this interview about the Galaxy visual identity system.

What the Samsung logo means today

Today’s logo carries the company name forward while leaving behind the stars and oval that once framed it. Its meaning is clearest when the layers are kept separate: “three stars” is Samsung’s explanation of the name and its historical symbolism; the oval is a notable past design whose official symbolism should not be overstated; and the current blue lettermark emphasizes a distinctive, adaptable rendering of “Samsung.” Across those changes, the identity moved from literal star imagery toward a globally legible wordmark.
