The Scribble Pen was promoted as a way to scan a color from an object and reproduce it on paper or a digital screen. But the promotional video did not establish that the pen could automatically capture colors: a 2024 scholarly analysis says the drawing instrument shown was an ordinary ballpoint prefilled with ink matching the scene. That makes the key question not how the advertised technology worked, but what the video actually proved.
What the Scribble Pen was supposed to do
Scribble Technology advertised a pen that could scan a color from an object and then reproduce that color on paper or a digital screen. In principle, such a device would combine color sensing with a way to dispense matching ink or send the sampled color to a screen. The company’s pitch described the result; it did not, by itself, establish that the promotional footage demonstrated the sensing process.
Sarah Marquart’s 2016 report for Futurism questioned the evidence behind the claim and covered the crowdfunding campaign’s difficulties. A later scholarly case study, “Evidentiary Convincing and Evidentiary Fallacies,” examined how the promotional video presented the supposed color capture.

What the promotional video showed—and what it did not
The 2024 case study’s authors interpret the video as edited to make it appear that the pen automatically captured a color. They say the instrument shown drawing was a regular ballpoint pen filled with ink that already matched the scene. On that analysis, the footage showed matching ink being used, not a demonstrated process in which the pen sampled an object and produced the corresponding color.
This is a conclusion about the video’s evidentiary value, not a hands-on test of a Scribble device. The distinction matters: footage can show a colored line on paper without establishing how the ink was selected or whether a sensor, color-matching system, or working prototype produced it. The case study’s authors describe the video as fabricated visual evidence; the article’s conclusion should be understood as their scholarly assessment.

What happened to the crowdfunding campaigns
The campaign history adds context, but the platform explanations should be attributed to the parties that gave them. Futurism reported that Kickstarter had raised $366,566 before the creator cancelled the campaign. The creators said Kickstarter had requested a more illustrative video on short notice. Futurism then reported that $227,540 had been raised on Tilt before Tilt closed the campaign.

Tilt said the requested conditions were not met and that it would discontinue the campaign and refund contributors. These are the platforms’ and organizers’ reported accounts, not independent proof of every point in the dispute.

The 2024 scholarly article separately reports that more than €320,000 had been raised before cancellation. That figure is the article’s own reported amount; it uses euros and should not be combined with Futurism’s platform-specific dollar totals.
Is the Scribble Pen real or available now?
The claims and campaign were real historical events, but the reviewed sources do not establish that a working Scribble product shipped or that the pen or its accessories can be bought today. The crowdfunding totals and promotional video are not evidence of present-day availability. Treat any current listing or claim of compatibility as something to verify independently rather than assuming it is the original device.

What to use if you want to draw in many colors
If the practical goal is simply to draw with a range of colors, conventional colored pens are a straightforward option. They do not scan arbitrary objects; you choose from the inks available. To select a set for your work, compare:

- Tip type: Fine tips suit small details and lettering; broader tips make heavier marks. Match the tip to the scale of your drawing.
- Refillability: Refillable pens can reduce replacement waste, but check whether the inks and refills you need are available.
- Paper and purpose: Consider how the ink behaves on your intended paper and whether you are sketching, lettering, or making finished drawings.
