Uri Tuchman’s appeal comes from a precise combination: an absurd or playful idea is matched by the fabrication skill needed to make it convincing. Caleb Kraft described that pairing as a “perfect storm” in Make:’s November 8, 2018 profile, updated November 12, 2018. The projects remain useful examples of how concept, form and craftsmanship can turn a joke into an object with real visual impact.

What “perfect storm” means in Tuchman’s work
Kraft called Tuchman “a tool maker on YouTube” with “the perfect storm of whimsical and creative ideas, and skills to back them up.” The important point is the pairing. Whimsy supplies the unexpected premise; skilled making supplies the structure, finish and function that make the premise believable.

That balance matters to anyone interested in painting, sculpture or object design. A funny concept alone can feel like a sketch. Careful shaping, joinery, surface treatment and presentation give it the authority of a finished artwork.

The hand-shaped saw: a joke made tangible
The profile’s signature example begins with the phrase “hand saw.” Rather than treating it only as a name for a woodworking tool, Tuchman turns the phrase into a physical image: a saw incorporating a sculpted hand and a gothic-inspired blade, designed to be shaken.
Kraft describes it as taking the concept of a “hand saw” and running with the idea. The humor is immediate, but the object works because the hand is treated as a deliberate sculptural form and the blade gives the piece a coherent, dramatic silhouette. The result sits between functional tool, prop and artwork.
Why the visual contrast works
- Literal language: the familiar tool name becomes an object you can see.
- Unexpected anatomy: a hand is normally a body part, not a tool handle or moving mechanism.
- Gothic styling: the blade’s ornamental character prevents the piece from looking like an ordinary saw with a novelty attachment.
- Performance: shaking the hand makes the idea readable through action, not just appearance.
Humor recurring across the projects
The hand saw is not an isolated gag. Kraft also points to backwards scissors and a hand-cranked circular saw. Each starts with a recognizable tool and introduces a physical contradiction or comic shift.

|---|---|---|
| Hand-shaped saw | A “hand saw” becomes a saw with a hand, suitable for shaking. | Sculpted anatomy, a gothic-inspired blade and a performative mechanism. |
| Backwards scissors | A familiar cutting tool is reoriented into an intentionally wrong-looking object. | The altered form must still read clearly as scissors. |
| Hand-cranked circular saw | A powered-looking machine is recast as a manually operated contraption. | Visible mechanical logic turns the joke into a complete tool concept. |
The shared method is more useful than any individual punchline: begin with an ordinary object, change one assumption, then build every visible detail around that change.

Kraft’s profile also identifies tutorials on making tools and videos about Tuchman’s engraving process. Those subjects show that the whimsical projects are supported by demonstrable workshop knowledge rather than being isolated visual tricks.
Tool-making as explanation
A tool tutorial exposes the decisions hidden inside a finished object: how a part is shaped, how movement is transferred and how a design becomes usable. For artists, that is a reminder that construction can be part of the artwork’s meaning.
Engraving as surface craft
Engraving adds a different layer of skill. It depends on controlled marks, rhythm and patience, whether the surface is treated as decoration or as a way to clarify the object’s character. Viewers interested in making similar work should treat engraving as a process to study, not as a named product recommendation; the profile does not identify a particular brand or model of graver.

- Find the ordinary reference. Identify the tool, phrase or visual category the object starts from.
- Locate the deliberate disruption. Ask what has been reversed, personified, enlarged or given an impossible role.
- Check the fabrication. Look for the shaping, mechanism and surface work that make the disruption coherent.
- Notice the presentation. Motion, scale and silhouette often deliver the idea as strongly as the object’s construction.
- Separate humor from finish. The joke may be quick, but the making is what gives it staying power.
What Tuchman says he is making now
Tuchman’s public Patreon page describes his output as inventions, tools, engravings and sculptures, and says he makes a new project and video every two weeks. That cadence is the page’s own self-description and should not be treated as an independently verified schedule. The page is the appropriate destination for readers who want to follow or support his ongoing work.
The lasting lesson of the “perfect storm”
Tuchman’s projects are compelling because neither half of the formula is ornamental. Whimsy determines what the object wants to be; skilled toolmaking determines whether it can exist convincingly. The hand saw, backwards scissors and hand-cranked circular saw all show the same principle: an inventive premise becomes memorable when every material and mechanical decision commits to it.
