The holiday installation called Jason Mack’s World’s Tallest Glass Tree stands at Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. Recent PBS Wisconsin coverage reports a total height of 36 feet—including its five-foot blown-glass star—a 17-foot-wide base and roughly 3,000 pounds of glass.
“Largest” is the title’s wording; the project and its coverage specifically claim “tallest.” The available reporting documents the tree’s dimensions but does not establish an independently certified world record by height, volume or mass.
Where is Wisconsin’s glass Christmas tree?
The installation is built each holiday season at Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay, in southeastern Wisconsin. It is a temporary sculpture created by glass artist Jason Mack with community participation, rather than a conventional evergreen decorated with ornaments.

How a bottle becomes part of the sculpture
1. Community glass is collected
Residents donate glass bottles, which supply the raw material for the seasonal build. A 2024 Mack Glass Community announcement described that edition as using recycled blue glass; earlier versions had used green, so the color is not a permanent specification.
2. The bottles are crushed and melted
The bottles are crushed and heated in a mobile furnace at approximately 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Mack compares the molten material’s consistency to honey.

3. Visitors help apply the glass
The 31-foot steel tree frame spins while Mack and his team add molten glass. Visitors can drip glass onto the turning structure under the artists’ direction and event supervision. The application stage takes about seven to eight days, so participation depends on the scheduled build sessions and available supervision.
4. The star is installed
A five-foot blown-glass star is placed on top of the finished form. Mack has described this as a “nail-biting process,” because lifting and securing the topper is a delicate final step.

What happens after Christmas?
The sculpture is not stored intact as a permanent tree. After the display, its glass coating is removed and remelted. PBS Wisconsin reports that the material is spun into about a thousand smaller glass trees, which are made for sale as souvenirs. Mack describes the project as a cycle of building, dismantling and creating something new from the same glass.

Participation is part of the event, but visitors do not independently handle molten glass; they work only as directed by the artists and event staff. Yerkes Observatory’s festival notice has described parking at Williams Bay School, shuttle transportation, reserved tickets, the observatory gift shop and access to the Big Dome telescope. Those arrangements should be treated as season-specific rather than assumed for every year.

Why the installation is notable
- It is made from recycled community glass: donated bottles become the material for a monumental sculpture.
- It is participatory: supervised visitors can contribute glass during the build.
- It is temporary by design: the finished tree becomes material for smaller souvenirs instead of remaining a single permanent object.
- Its record language needs care: sources support the project’s “tallest glass tree” claim and reported dimensions, but not an independent adjudication of the world’s largest glass tree.
