THERMOspeed is EBS’s insulated high-speed roller door for cooler and freezer openings, including blast-freezer applications described in EBS materials. It is intended to replace some heavy sliding panel doors where frequent access, icing, jamming or manual handling slow operations. The door uses a flexible insulated curtain, automated opening and closing, and impact-release features. EBS also offers two configurations: EVO2 for internal openings and EXT for external openings.

Suitability is configuration-specific. EBS’s current product page states an application range of +2°C to +95°C, while its THERMOspeed EXT technical brochure states -35°C to +95°C. Because the lower limit is critical in blast-freezer design, a project team should obtain written confirmation of the proposed model, curtain, controls and operating limits from EBS before specifying it.

What THERMOspeed is designed to do
THERMOspeed is a commercial insulated rapid-roller door marketed for cold-storage, freezer and cooler openings. Instead of moving a large rigid panel sideways, the system raises a flexible curtain through an automated drive. EBS describes the compact door as an alternative to heavy sliding freezer doors and says it is increasingly used in blast-freezer settings.

That operating concept matters in facilities where a freezer opening is used repeatedly during a shift. A sliding door can require a long travel path, manual effort and clear floor area beside the opening. A rapid roller can keep the opening cycle compact and allow traffic to resume quickly, provided the selected drive, controls and safety equipment match the traffic pattern.
EBS says the curtain requires no de-icing and that the door can address icing and jamming problems associated with sliding blast-freezer doors. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent performance findings. They should be treated as design objectives to verify during a site assessment rather than as guaranteed results for every freezer.
Where EBS documents blast-freezer use
New cold-storage construction
In an application article dated December 2, 2024, EBS reported that New Zealand operator Coolpack Coolstores selected THERMOspeed doors for blast freezers at a new cold-storage facility. The article presents the product as a high-speed freezer door suited to automated access in a modern plant. It does not publish an independent energy, cycle-life or throughput study for that installation.
Retrofit at a Tasmanian meat producer
An EBS case study dated June 11, 2024 describes a Tasmanian meat producer whose existing sliding blast-freezer doors regularly iced and jammed. EBS says three old doors were removed and three THERMOspeed doors were installed and commissioned over one weekend. This is a useful example of a fast retrofit programme, but the case study does not quantify changes in electricity use, temperature recovery, maintenance hours, throughput or total cost.

The case therefore supports the possibility of replacing multiple problem doors in a planned shutdown. It does not establish that every site can complete the same work in one weekend; access, structural supports, electrical work, hygienic finishes, refrigeration pressure conditions and commissioning requirements will determine the actual programme.
THERMOspeed configurations: EVO2 and EXT
EVO2 for internal openings
EBS identifies EVO2 as the configuration for internal openings. An internal door normally separates two controlled spaces within a building, so the specification must account for the temperature difference, pressure relationship, wash-down regime, traffic direction and available headroom on both sides.
EXT for external openings
EBS identifies EXT for external openings. An external installation adds exposure to wind, rain, sunlight, dirt and larger pressure fluctuations. The EXT brochure contains the published thermal, speed and motor figures most often associated with THERMOspeed, but the brochure’s publication date was not established in the available material. Ask EBS to confirm that the brochure values apply to the exact EXT configuration being quoted.

| Item | EBS-published value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Curtain thickness | 30 mm | Stated in the current product page and the EXT technical brochure. |
| Thermal performance | 0.9 W/m²K, also stated as R 6.31 | Figure published in the EXT technical brochure; confirm the test basis and applicable assembly. |
| Application temperature | +2°C to +95°C | Range shown on the current product page. |
| Application temperature | -35°C to +95°C | Range shown in the EXT technical brochure; it conflicts with the current product page. |
| Opening and closing speed | 0.75–2.8 m/s | Range shown in the EXT technical brochure; actual speed depends on configuration and controls. |
| Motor | 0.75–1.5 kW | Range shown in the EXT technical brochure. |
| Standard opening | 4000 mm × 4000 mm | Dimension listed on the current product page. |
| Maximum opening width | Up to 13,000 mm | Maximum width listed on the current product page; confirm maximum height and engineering limits. |
The two temperature ranges cannot be silently combined. A design team working at -20°C, -30°C or colder should not rely on the brochure’s -35°C figure without confirmation that the proposed door, curtain material, seals, controls and installation details are approved for that duty. Conversely, a current quotation may use a revised specification that is not represented by the older brochure.
How the curtain and impact recovery work
EBS describes a flexible closed-cell polyethylene foam curtain. The 30 mm curtain is intended to provide insulation while allowing the door to roll into a compact head assembly. EBS also describes modular curtain panels, so a damaged section can be replaced without necessarily replacing the complete curtain.
The manufacturer says the curtain can release from its guides when struck and recover afterward. This design is intended to reduce damage from forklifts, pallet movers or other traffic that contacts the opening. The materials reviewed do not provide an independently measured impact rating, a stated number of recovery cycles, a service-life guarantee or a quantified repair-cost saving. Those points belong in the technical and commercial clarification schedule.

The EXT brochure lists light curtains, fall protection and emergency manual operation among the safety provisions. The current product page also describes safety features. The exact package must be selected for the opening, traffic and risk assessment; a generic feature list is not a substitute for site-specific guarding.

Sliding panel door versus rapid roller: the decision points
A replacement decision should start with the failure mode of the existing door, not with speed alone. Heavy sliding doors may remain appropriate where openings are very large, traffic is infrequent, pressure forces are high or the facility needs a rigid panel for a particular hygiene or security requirement. A rapid roller may be attractive where repeated cycles, limited side clearance or icing-related stoppages dominate.
| Decision area | Questions for the project team |
|---|---|
| Opening workflow | How many cycles occur per hour, and how much time is lost while a sliding panel travels or is handled? |
| Icing and jamming | Where does ice form: guides, floor tracks, seals, hinges or the surrounding structure? |
| Temperature and pressure | What are the normal, minimum and maximum temperatures on each side, and what pressure differential occurs during operation? |
| Opening size | Does the proposed width and height fit the selected EVO2 or EXT engineering limits? |
| Impact exposure | Which vehicles or loads could strike the curtain, and how will a released curtain be reset? |
| Safety | What light-curtain, fall-protection, emergency-release and interlock functions are required by the site risk assessment? |
| Service access | Can technicians reach the drive, guides and curtain without disrupting production or entering a hazardous zone? |
| Installation | Are structural supports, electrical supplies, drainage, refrigeration interfaces and hygienic finishes ready before the shutdown? |
| Commercial risk | What are the installation cost, commissioning scope, spare-panel strategy and warranty terms for this quotation? |
Specification workflow for a blast-freezer project
- Record the opening. Measure clear width, clear height, headroom, side room, floor level and the position of beams, services and refrigeration equipment. Compare the result with EBS’s listed 4000 mm × 4000 mm standard opening and any project-specific maximums.
- Map the thermal envelope. Document temperatures on both sides, defrost conditions, humidity, pressure differences, wash-down temperatures and any periods when the freezer is empty or being loaded.
- Choose the configuration. Ask EBS whether EVO2 or EXT is appropriate. Do not select EXT solely because its brochure contains the -35°C figure; obtain written confirmation for the complete proposed assembly.
- Define traffic. Count door cycles, identify forklift and pallet-truck dimensions, establish approach speeds and record whether pedestrians share the opening.
- Set the control sequence. Specify activation devices, opening and closing speeds, hold-open times, interlocks, alarms, emergency operation and the response after an impact release.
- Engineer the support. Confirm lintel capacity, side-guide fixing, floor tolerances, clearances, electrical supply and protection from wash-down or collision.
- Plan the shutdown. Coordinate removal of the old door, installation, electrical connection, refrigeration checks, hygiene cleaning, testing and operator training. The Tasmanian case shows that a weekend programme is possible in one documented project, not that it is a universal schedule.
- Close the documentation. Obtain drawings, wiring diagrams, operating instructions, maintenance intervals, spare-part identification, warranty wording and acceptance-test criteria before handover.
Installation and commissioning checks
Before the door is released for production, test the complete opening rather than only the motor. The curtain should travel smoothly through its guides, stop at the programmed limits and respond correctly to every safety device. Test normal activation from every approach, power-loss operation, emergency manual release, obstruction detection and recovery after a simulated impact release.
Record the measured opening and closing speeds for the installed configuration, the temperature and pressure conditions during testing, and any deviations from the quotation. Confirm that the door does not interfere with nearby conveyors, pallet loads, evaporators, drains, fire routes or cleaning equipment. In a blast-freezer environment, inspect for condensation or ice at guides, thresholds, seals and adjacent structure after the system has reached operating temperature.

Maintenance planning should identify curtain-panel inspection, guide cleaning, drive checks, safety-device tests, emergency-operation tests and the procedure for replacing a damaged modular panel. EBS describes replaceable modular panels and impact release, but the available materials do not quantify service life, mean cycles between repairs or comparative savings against sliding doors. Request those details if lifecycle costing is part of the approval.
Questions to put to EBS before ordering
- Which current model and curtain specification are approved for the actual minimum freezer temperature?
- Why does the current product page show +2°C to +95°C while the EXT brochure shows -35°C to +95°C, and which document governs the quotation?
- Are the 0.9 W/m²K and R 6.31 figures based on the curtain alone or the complete installed door assembly?
- What opening height is available with the quoted maximum width, and what structural support is required?
- What opening and closing speeds will be programmed for this traffic pattern?
- Which light curtains, fall protection, emergency controls and interlocks are included?
- How is an impact-released curtain reset, and which replacement panels should be held on site?
- What installation, electrical, commissioning and operator-training tasks are included?
- What maintenance schedule, response time and spare-parts support apply in the facility’s region?
- What warranty period and exclusions appear in the current contract?
Practical verdict
THERMOspeed is worth evaluating when a blast-freezer opening suffers from slow access, repeated icing or sliding-door jamming and the site can support an automated roller-door installation. EBS documents both a new-facility blast-freezer selection and a three-door retrofit, while its published design includes a 30 mm insulated curtain, impact release and modular replacement panels.
The decisive issue is specification certainty. The conflicting lower temperature limits mean that no buyer should treat a generic THERMOspeed description as approval for every blast-freezer condition. Select EVO2 or EXT with EBS, verify the complete temperature and pressure envelope, engineer the opening and safety system, and make the quotation identify the exact performance, warranty and commissioning obligations.
