These Are the 10 Richest Photographers of All Time—According to Reported Estimates

A 2024 ZedDash list gives estimated fortunes for 10 photographers, but its method is undisclosed. We separate those claims from documented Christie's auction prices for works by Andreas Gursky and Cindy Sherman.

There is no independently verified all-time ranking of photographers by personal wealth. A July 31, 2024 ZedDash article names 10 photographers and assigns estimated fortunes, including $440 million for Annie Leibovitz. Because that article does not disclose a calculation method or provide financial documentation, the figures below should be read as reported estimates—not audited net worth figures.

The 10 names and estimates reported by ZedDash

The source presents these figures as estimates. It does not explain how it calculated them, whether they represent assets, or whether they reflect current income, taxes, debts or money personally retained from artwork sales.

Photographer Estimate reported by ZedDash
Marco Grob $1.5 million
Zhang Jingna $1 million–$3 million
Nick Veasey $1 million–$5 million
GMB Akash $1 million–$5 million
Lynsey Addario $1 million–$5 million
Morgan Norman $18 million
Gilles Bensimon $30 million
Andreas Gursky $30 million
Cindy Sherman $35 million
Annie Leibovitz $440 million

On the numbers alone, Leibovitz has the highest estimate in this particular list. That does not prove she is the richest photographer in the world: the source’s methodology is undisclosed, and the other estimates have not been independently validated here.

What the two documented auction sales actually show

Art-market records can verify the price paid for an individual photograph, but an auction price is not the same thing as the photographer’s net worth or income.

Andreas Gursky: Rhein II

Christie’s reported that Rhein II (1999) sold at Christie’s New York in November 2011 for $4,338,500. That is the recorded sale price for one work, not Gursky’s personal fortune or the amount he ultimately received.

Cindy Sherman: Untitled #96

Christie’s reported that Sherman’s Untitled #96 sold in New York in 2011 for US$3,890,500. Again, the figure describes a specific transaction and does not establish Sherman’s assets or lifetime earnings.

Christie’s account of the 2011 records

In a financial-results release published in 2012, Christie’s stated: “The record price for a photograph was broken twice in 2011, first with Cindy Sherman’s Untitled, 1981, in May, and then by Andreas Gursky’s Rhein II, 1999, which sold for $4.3 million in November.” The statement documents auction records, not personal wealth.

Why an auction record cannot rank personal fortunes

  • Different measurement: a net-worth estimate attempts to value a person’s assets and liabilities; an auction result is the gross price paid for one artwork.
  • Unclear proceeds: the artist may not own the work at sale, and commissions, gallery arrangements, taxes and other costs affect what anyone receives.
  • Incomplete financial picture: wealth can include assignments, licensing, publishing, investments, property and businesses that are not visible in auction data.
  • Different dates: the Christie’s sales occurred in 2011, while the ZedDash estimates were published in 2024. Neither set of figures automatically describes a person’s finances today.

How to interpret the “richest photographer” question

If the question means “Which name has the largest estimate in the ZedDash list?”, the answer is Annie Leibovitz at the article’s reported $440 million estimate. If it means “Who has the highest verified personal net worth among all photographers?”, the available material does not establish an answer.

The most defensible comparison is to identify what each number measures, who published it and when, whether a calculation or transaction record is available, and whether it is a personal-wealth estimate or a gross artwork sale.

Bottom line on the 10-photographer list

This is best treated as a 2024 publisher’s list of unverified estimates, not a definitive all-time ranking. The strongest independently documented facts in the available record are the Christie’s auction results for Gursky’s Rhein II and Sherman’s Untitled #96; those prices demonstrate the market value reached by particular photographs, not the photographers’ personal fortunes.
