May: Beautiful Bullet Journal is my favorite for everyday doodling because it brings drawing into a daily-planning habit. For a conventional drawing canvas, Sketchbook is the recommendation I would give most beginners and intermediate artists. The right choice depends on whether you want a daily doodling habit, a drawing workspace, visual brainstorming, or notes that include drawings.
Quick comparison
| App | Best for | Why choose it | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| May: Beautiful Bullet Journal | Daily doodling and journaling | Drawing fits into an expandable daily-planner canvas | It is a planner with drawing, not a professional illustration suite |
| Sketchbook | Conventional drawing and sketching | Brushes, layers, guides and symmetry tools | It is less suited to open-ended visual planning or synchronized mixed notes |
| Concepts | Open-ended visual ideation | A flexible canvas for exploring and arranging ideas | Its focus is visual thinking rather than daily journaling or note synchronization |
| Notewise | Visual note-taking | Drawing can sit alongside text and media | It is not presented as a specialist illustration app |
| Microsoft OneNote | Notes across devices | Drawing and flexible notes with cross-device synchronization | Its appeal here is note access, not specialist drawing controls |
1. May: Beautiful Bullet Journal is my favorite
May is the app I would open most often if my goal were to keep drawing connected to everyday life. It combines a daily planner with an expandable canvas, making room for casual doodles alongside planning and journaling.
That combination matters. A conventional art app asks you to decide to draw and open a drawing workspace. May puts drawing inside a daily-planning habit, so a quick sketch or visual reminder can live with the rest of the day’s notes.

Choose May if you want:
- a daily planner where you can also doodle;
- a low-friction place for casual marks rather than polished illustrations; or
- drawing to be part of planning and journaling rather than a separate activity.
Do not choose it expecting a professional illustration suite. The recommendation is for everyday doodling on a planner canvas, not for replacing a dedicated drawing app.
2. Sketchbook is the best dedicated drawing app here
If you mean “I want to draw on a conventional canvas,” Sketchbook is the strongest general-purpose recommendation in this group. The cited article describes brushes, layers, guides, symmetry and fill tools, making it a better fit for conventional sketching than a planner or note-taking app.
Pick Sketchbook when you want to:
- draw and sketch on a conventional canvas;
- use brushes and layers; or
- make use of guides and symmetry tools.
Its role in this list is distinct from May’s: Sketchbook is the drawing-workspace recommendation, while May is the favorite for fitting casual drawing into a daily habit.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose Concepts when the main goal is open-ended visual thinking. It solves a different problem from a conventional sketching app: the emphasis is on exploring and organizing ideas, rather than on daily journaling or keeping mixed notes synchronized.
4. Notewise is best for visual note-taking
Notewise belongs on this list because many people need notes that combine drawing with text and media, rather than a pure drawing studio. It is useful when you want marks and written material to share a note.

Think of Notewise as a visual note-taking option, not as a competitor to a specialist illustration app. If your main goal is conventional drawing, Sketchbook is the more appropriate choice.
5. Microsoft OneNote is useful when synchronization matters most
OneNote’s main appeal here is that notes and drawings can be synchronized across devices. That can make it practical when you want to return to the same mixed notes on different devices.
Choose OneNote when your drawing is part of a notebook or other notes you want to access across devices. Its recommendation is about synchronization and flexible notes, not specialist drawing controls.
