Artist Jeff De Boer makes miniature metal armor for cats and mice—not mass-produced pet gear, but one-of-a-kind sculptures built by hand. His series turns jewelry-making skills into tiny suits of armor, with meticulous finishing that gives the metal its knightly gleam.
Who makes armor for cats?
Jeff De Boer, a Calgary-based artist, began his cat-and-mouse armor series while he was in college. When Make: profiled him on March 24, 2017, the work had been developing for nearly 30 years. De Boer has continued to expand and refine the series.

His path to miniature armor began with jewelry design and metalworking. He enrolled at the Alberta College of Art and Design in 1984, then adapted fine-jewelry techniques to work at a scale small enough for animals.
Are these real suits of armor for cats?
They are real, hand-built metal sculptures in the form of armor, not documented mass-market pet products. De Boer’s aim was to make an authentic suit of armor at miniature scale: “In order to bring authenticity to the work, I had to build something that was real. So why not a real suit of armor for a small animal?”

The mouse armor also carries a protective metaphor. De Boer described it this way: “We need someone taking care of the little guy in a dangerous world,” adding, “I feel that’s part of what the mouse armor represents.” The source presents the pieces as artwork, not as tested or recommended animal-protection equipment.
How are the miniature metal suits made?
Jewelry techniques and custom tools
De Boer draws on jewelry-making and metalworking methods to fabricate the small components. Each suit is unique and made by hand, and he creates custom tools for the work rather than relying on a standard production setup.

Finishing the metal
The polished surface takes extensive abrasive and polishing work. De Boer told Make: that finishing takes as much time as making: “For every hour I spend making something, I spend an equal hour on the finishing. It’s like a science — the choice of abrasives, the polishes. The ‘why’ and ‘how’ of finishing takes years to master.” That is his account of his own process, not a general production benchmark.
He also describes finishing as a way to shape how viewers perceive the object: “Finishing is also sometimes a bit of sleight-of-hand. You can’t make a perfect thing, but you can trick people into believing it is.”
