Ali Zh’s paper V6 runs on compressed air from a balloon, making its pistons and other engine-like parts move. Later reporting identifies the maker as Aliaksei Zholner and describes a wider range of paper mechanisms. “Working” here means the parts move—not that the models burn gasoline or provide useful vehicle power.
The V6 is compelling because its lightweight mechanism makes engine motion visible. Plans have been reported for particular models, but that does not establish that every model has a complete, currently available, authorized template.
Meet the maker behind the moving paper engines
The original Make feature spotlights a six-cylinder V6 made by YouTuber Ali Zh. Later reporting identifies the maker as Aliaksei Zholner and discusses a broader series that includes inline-four, V6, V8, rotary, and miniature examples. That expanded inventory comes from later secondary reporting, rather than the original Make feature.
The original Make article describes the V6 materials as little more than paper, scissors, glue, and tape, but says the drive-belt material is unknown. Later coverage discusses additional construction details across different models; those should not be treated as a verified parts list for every engine.

How the V6 paper engine works
In later reporting, the V6 is described as having pistons connected to a crankshaft, with tubing directing compressed air toward the cylinders. The crankshaft links the pistons’ back-and-forth travel to rotary motion. A cam and valves control the timing of air entering and leaving the mechanism.
Air from an inflated balloon moves the lightweight pistons. The balloon is an air supply, not fuel. This explanation describes the reported V6 design; it should not be assumed that every paper model uses the same parts.
What viewers can actually see
- Pistons: repeated linear movement inside the cylinders.
- Crankshaft: the link between piston travel and rotary motion.
- Cam and valves: parts reported to control air timing in the V6.
- Tubing and passages: routes that deliver compressed air.
The paper construction makes the mechanical relationships visible in a way that is harder to see inside a conventional engine.

The V8 and other reported paper engines
Later reporting discusses Zholner’s V8, inline-four, rotary, and miniature models. It describes these as compressed-air-powered mechanisms, not useful combustion engines. Specific features and construction details reported for one model should not automatically be applied to the others.
The original Make feature also presents a paper four-cylinder model and says its plans, including assembly instructions, are available for download. That plan claim applies to the four-cylinder model described there; it should not be transferred to the V6.
A thumbnail-sized example
Cory Doctorow’s 2016 Boing Boing report gives the dimensions of one single-stroke miniature paper engine as 18 × 13 × 22 mm. It describes compressed air delivered from a balloon through a throttled paper tube and reports that Zholner provided downloadable templates. The measurement applies to that particular model, not to the wider series.

What “working” means—and what it does not mean
“Working paper engine” is useful shorthand for a model whose mechanism moves under compressed air. The cited material does not document gasoline combustion, useful vehicle power, or measured horsepower, torque, or efficiency.
