In San Ángel, Mexico City, architect Andrés Gutiérrez gave a 1962 modernist house a vivid, personal interior while retaining much of its original architectural character. The renovation for a young couple who inherited the home brought back its living-room library, kept original floors and extensive woodwork, and layered in saturated color, sculptural furniture, Mexican-made pieces, and references spanning several eras.
A contemporary interior that keeps the house’s history in view
Jaime Ortiz Monasterio designed the house in 1962, according to Livingetc’s October 3, 2026 feature. The owners valued its original structure but wanted the interior to feel younger and more like them. Andrés Gutiérrez of A-G estudio took on both the renovation and interior design.

“The main challenge was finding the right balance between preserving the original architecture and giving the house a completely new life,” Gutiérrez says in the feature. That balance is visible in the reported scope: original floors and extensive woodwork were retained, while some timber was replaced and window frames and glass were renewed. The project was largely a retrofit, not a wholesale remaking of the structure.
Color and sculptural forms make the rooms feel personal
Rather than treating color as a finishing touch, Gutiérrez made it a defining part of the interior. Lilac rugs and sofas, duck-egg walls, and pea-green upholstered chairs set up combinations that feel lively without relying on a single dominant hue. The feature also describes a marble table on chunky metal legs and a bed with a tubular padded frame—forms that give the rooms a tactile, sculptural quality.

“I’ve always been deeply connected to color, and I simply can’t imagine designing interiors in any other way,” Gutiérrez says. He describes its role as emotional as well as visual: “For me, one of the most important aspects of interior design, perhaps the most important of all, is making people feel something,” he says. “Color is one of the most powerful tools I have to achieve that.”
His preference for expressive shapes and assertive details is just as direct: “I’ve always been a maximalist. I’m drawn to voluptuous forms, and I’m not particularly interested in discretion or simplicity,” he says. In this home, that approach gives the rooms their exuberance without requiring the architecture itself to be discarded.

A Mexican identity built from many references
The owners wanted a distinctly Mexican identity, but not one reduced to folkloric shorthand. Gutiérrez describes design as an ongoing exploration of national identity, with different periods and visual influences allowed to sit together rather than being reconstructed as a single historical style. His references include the Memphis movement and Ettore Sottsass, alongside the ways Art Deco and functionalism were adapted in Mexico.
Local makers anchor that mix. Livingetc reports that much of the furniture was made in Mexico and that the artwork came from Mexican creatives. The feature names modernist armchairs by Antonio Attolini Lack, as well as pieces by Ad Hoc, Bibi Bibi, and Comité de Proyectos. Gutiérrez also designed some cabinets, credenzas, and outdoor dining chairs; some other furniture was customized in color or finish.

“The idea was never to recreate a particular period, but rather to allow these different moments in Mexican design and visual culture to coexist within the same space,” he says. The result, as described in the feature, makes cultural identity a living set of references—not a theme applied over the house.

One of the renovation’s most meaningful interventions was the return of the living-room bookshelves. Previous owners had removed them, although the house had originally been conceived almost as a “library to live in.” Gutiérrez says that little of the idea remained when he first saw the home; the restored shelves now reach almost floor-to-ceiling, according to Livingetc.

A large timber column shaped like an umbrella remains another defining feature. Gutiérrez says it connects mezzanine levels and creates intimacy within an otherwise open space. The feature situates that structural form in a broader Mexican modernist vocabulary, also mentioning examples by Félix Candela and Pedro Ramírez Vázquez.
For Gutiérrez, the point is not to make every element discreetly blend in. “I’m drawn to irreverence; I will always prefer something that stands out,” he says. Here, the bold furnishings and palette bring new energy, while the library, woodwork, floors, and column keep the house’s architectural story legible.
