The unusual map is Hajime Narukawa’s AuthaGraph projection. It looks tilted and rearranged because it sacrifices the familiar rectangular layout to keep continent and ocean proportions much closer to their real relationships on a spherical Earth. That makes it one of the strongest flat maps for comparing relative areas—but not a perfect map or a universal replacement for navigation charts.
What makes the AuthaGraph map look so strange?
Most people learn the world through rectangular maps, especially Mercator-style maps. AuthaGraph breaks that visual habit: continents are rotated, shifted and placed in positions that can seem arbitrary. The odd appearance is the result of its construction, not an artistic mistake.
Hajime Narukawa’s design won Japan’s 2016 Good Design Grand Award. Its central goal is to reduce the severe size distortion that occurs when a spherical planet is flattened into a rectangle.
How AuthaGraph is constructed
The method starts with a globe divided into 96 equal regions, represented as triangular sections. Those sections are transferred from the sphere to a tetrahedron and then unfolded into a rectangle. The arrangement preserves land-and-water proportions more closely than many familiar projections while allowing the finished map to be tiled without visible seams.

- FOLDED EDITION - portable 8x10 inch folded size
- WORLD MAP is printed on 24lb paper
- 3D SHADED RELIEF: 3D shaded visual terrain relief for land and oceans
- PERFECT world map for business, home or educational use
- UP-TO-DATE: completely current world wall map poster
Because the process can be reversed, the pieces can also be folded back toward a globe. This sphere-to-tetrahedron-to-rectangle sequence explains both the projection’s unusual orientation and its practical flexibility.
Is it really the most accurate world map?
“Most accurate” needs a narrow definition. AuthaGraph is particularly useful for preserving broad relative proportions on a flat world map. It is not perfectly area-equal, and it does not preserve every property at once. The Good Design Award committee’s description says the map needs more subdivisions “for improving its accuracy to be officially called an area-equal map.”

| Projection or use | Area accuracy | Shape and angles | Navigation | Continuity and readability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AuthaGraph | Strong broad proportional comparison, but not officially fully area-equal | Trade-offs from converting a sphere to a rectangle | Not a universal navigation chart | Tessellates without visible seams; unfamiliar layout |
| Mercator | Severely enlarges regions near the poles | Preserves local angles and bearings well | Highly useful for bearing-based navigation | Familiar rectangular presentation |
What Mercator gets wrong about size
Mercator’s strength is navigation: local angles and straight-line bearings remain convenient. Its weakness is area. Distortion increases toward the poles, making high-latitude places appear far larger than they are.

- Africa is approximately 14 times larger than Greenland, although a classroom Mercator map can make them look comparable.
- Greenland is 3.5 times smaller than Australia.
- Alaska covers 4.4 times less area than Australia.
These comparisons explain why AuthaGraph can feel more truthful when the question is “How large are these places relative to one another?” Antarctica also appears enormous on Mercator even though it ranks fifth among the continents.

- Classic Edition Decor That's Also a Real Reference: A 50" x 32" decorative-yet-functional world wall map with antique-style accents that give it an upscale, library-shelf feel while keeping the up-to-date political boundaries and place names of a current Rand McNally reference map
- Color-Matched Topographical Relief: Mountain ranges, plateaus and elevation changes shown in a coordinated color palette for at-a-glance identification of major physical features around the world
- Africa-Centered Projection: A less-common projection that allows viewers to see every continent and country complete and intact — without the splits and edge-distortions of standard Pacific- or Atlantic-centered maps
- Laminated for Durability, Rolled for Shipping: Laminated to resist scuffs and fingerprints in classrooms, offices and homes; ships rolled in a white cardboard tube with cap to arrive crease-free and ready to hang
- Trusted Since 1856 — Made in the USA: Rand McNally has been the most trusted source for maps, directions and travel content for 170 years; designed and printed in the United States
Why no flat map can be perfect
Earth is curved, while a poster is flat. Any projection must compromise among area, shape, direction, distance, orientation and continuity. AuthaGraph prioritizes broad area and land-water relationships, but its continents are not shown with the angles and familiar positions that make Mercator easy to recognize.
Its 96-region construction reduces distortion; it does not eliminate it. Calling AuthaGraph “the most accurate” without specifying the criterion overstates what the map can do. For navigation, use a projection designed for the route and task. For comparing continental or oceanic scale, AuthaGraph is often the more informative visual.

Can AuthaGraph fold into a globe or tile into a surface?
Yes. The map’s geometry supports both behaviors. Individual copies can be arranged in different directions to create a continuous surface without visible seams, and the layout can be folded back toward a globe. That makes it useful as a teaching model: students can see that a flat map is a transformation of a sphere rather than a literal view of Earth.

Globe assembly kit
An AuthaGraph Globe assembly kit provides a hands-on way to move between the flat projection and a three-dimensional form. It is better suited to demonstrating projection geometry than to replacing a conventional classroom globe.
Acrylic puzzle
The Good Design Store describes a 24-piece acrylic AuthaGraph puzzle on a stainless-steel base. The pieces can be shifted or rotated into different map layouts, making it a compact education or gift option for showing how projections work.
Quick Recap
Which map should you use?
- Choose AuthaGraph when you want a visual comparison of relative land and ocean proportions, a projection that can be tiled, or a conversation starter about how maps distort reality.
- Choose Mercator when the priority is familiar geography, local-angle preservation or bearing-based navigation.
- Use a different specialist projection when your task requires a particular balance of area, distance, direction or shape that neither map provides.
