Threaded rod is a long, externally threaded fastener used with nuts, washers and other components to connect, suspend or support assemblies. The term describes a form, not a complete engineering specification. Diameter, thread, length, steel grade, coating, configuration and compatible hardware determine whether a particular rod suits a job. A general-purpose all-thread rod must not be treated as interchangeable with an engineered concrete anchor rod.
What a threaded rod is
A threaded rod has threads along most or all of its length and normally has no bolt head. It is cut to the required length or supplied in a specified length, then secured with nuts and washers. Because both ends can accept hardware, one rod can clamp parts together, hold a bracket away from a surface, or suspend an assembly from a structure.

In building and fabrication work, rods may appear in support frames, equipment mounting, suspended services, bracing and alignment assemblies. Those broad uses do not make every rod suitable for a structural or life-safety connection. The rod’s markings and the project documents must establish what it is made for.
All-thread rod versus anchor rod
“All-thread” usually describes the physical form: continuous external threads. An anchor rod is a specified anchoring component selected for a defined connection, often into concrete. Anchor rods can be straight, bent, headed or headless. Some all-thread products are covered for concrete anchoring when the governing specification and the approved system call for them; a hardware-store description alone does not create that approval.

ASTM International’s ASTM F1554-20 explicitly states: “The specification also covers all-thread rod for use in anchoring to concrete.” The same standard covers anchor bolts and anchor rods used for structural supports attached to concrete, including building columns, highway-sign supports, street-lighting and traffic-signal supports, and steel bearing plates.

Why the specification matters more than the name
A listing that says only “threaded rod” leaves critical questions unanswered. A safe selection starts with the callout on the drawing, structural specification or approved anchor system. That callout may identify a standard, grade, nominal diameter, thread series, length, coating, configuration and required nuts and washers.
ASTM F1554-20 addresses chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions and zinc-coating requirements for its anchor-rod products. Its inch-pound values are the standard units in the specification. A rod that looks identical can have different strength or corrosion performance if it is made to a different specification.
ASTM F1554 grades and what they mean
ASTM F1554 includes three minimum-yield-strength grades. The figures below are specification values, not allowable loads for a completed connection.

| ASTM F1554 grade | Minimum specified yield strength | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 36 | 36,000 psi (36 ksi) | A lower-strength anchor-rod grade specified for connections whose design calls for it. |
| 55 | 55,000 psi (55 ksi) | An intermediate-strength grade; it is not automatically a better choice than Grade 36. |
| 105 | 105,000 psi (105 ksi) | A higher-strength grade that requires the connection design and compatible hardware to support its use. |
Hilti’s US Anchor Fastening Technical Guide, Edition 22 (August 2021), lists product families for F1554 Grades 36, 55 and 105 and gives the same minimum specified yield values—36,000, 55,000 and 105,000 psi—for those specific products. Portland Bolt’s grade reference also treats the labels as specification designations rather than a universal quality ranking. The governing project documents and design method decide which grade is appropriate.

A designer may also need to evaluate tensile and shear effects, thread engagement, steel rupture, concrete breakout, pullout, edge distances, spacing, embedment and installation conditions. Do not convert a grade number into a permissible load without the applicable design calculation.
Dimensions: diameter, thread and length
Nominal diameter
Diameter affects the available steel area, the matching nuts and washers and the geometry of the connection. It must match the specified system. ICC Evaluation Service report ESR-4145, in a table limited to its listed products and application context, shows a 1/2-inch nominal rod as 0.500 inch (12.7 mm). That example is a product-table dimension, not a universal tolerance or capacity for every 1/2-inch rod.
Thread characteristics
Threads must match the nuts, couplers, inserts and other hardware. Confirm the thread standard and pitch rather than relying on a visual match. A nut that starts by hand but binds before full engagement may have the wrong pitch, damaged threads or contamination. Do not force it with a wrench; replace the mismatched or damaged component.

Length and usable engagement
Specify the overall rod length and account for washers, nuts, plates, gaps, projections and any required embedment. Cutting a long rod on site can remove markings or leave insufficient thread engagement. For an anchor, the required embedment and projection come from the approved design, not from a generic rule of thumb.
Materials and corrosion protection
Product families commonly include carbon steel, zinc-coated carbon steel and stainless steel. Hilti’s 2021 guide shows hot-dip-galvanized variants and Type 304 and Type 316 stainless-steel threaded rods, along with the nuts and washers paired with particular products.
| Material or finish family | Selection considerations |
|---|---|
| Carbon steel | Use when the project specification and exposure permit it. It normally needs the specified protective finish where corrosion is a concern. |
| Zinc-coated carbon steel | ASTM F1554 identifies zinc-coating requirements for covered products. Confirm the coating type, thickness requirement and compatible hardware rather than assuming every galvanized appearance represents the same protection. |
| Type 304 stainless steel | A stainless product family used where the specification calls for its corrosion and material properties. Check the exact product standard and exposure suitability. |
| Type 316 stainless steel | Another stainless product family, often selected under a project-specific corrosion requirement. Verify the environment, fastener specification and matching hardware. |
No finish should be described as universally rust-proof. Moisture, chlorides, chemicals, temperature, trapped water, dissimilar-metal contact and installation damage all affect service life. The designer or specification should determine the material, coating and any isolation measures. Nuts and washers must be compatible with the rod material and coating; mixing unlike metals can create galvanic-corrosion problems in conductive, wet environments.
Configurations you may encounter
ASTM F1554 covers straight, bent, headed and headless anchor bolts or rods. A straight all-thread rod is useful where nuts can be installed on the exposed end and the anchoring system provides the required load transfer. Bent or headed forms can provide a different load-transfer mechanism in cast-in-place work. The configuration is part of the design, not a cosmetic preference.

For a retrofit or adhesive anchor, the rod may be installed into a drilled hole with an approved adhesive. The rod, adhesive, hole diameter, cleaning procedure, embedment and installation conditions are one system. Substituting a visually similar rod can invalidate the evaluation or design.

ASTM F1554 includes suitable nut and washer requirements, and manufacturer guides pair particular rods with specific hardware. Check the nut grade, washer dimensions and coating or alloy against the rod callout. A nut with a lower strength or incompatible finish can govern the connection even when the rod itself meets the specified grade.
Use couplers, sleeves, plates and spacers only when the drawing or system instructions permit them. Verify that the assembly leaves the required thread engagement after the washer, plate and any adjustment hardware are installed. Keep threads clean and protect them from welding spatter, concrete contamination and damage during handling.

When a threaded rod anchors into concrete, the rod is only one component. The concrete strength and condition, anchor type, adhesive or insert, hole preparation, embedment, edge distance, spacing, fixture geometry and applied loads all influence the result.

ICC Evaluation Service’s ESR-4145 design information states: “The design professional is responsible for checking threaded rod or bolt strength in tension, shear, and combined tension and shear, as applicable.” The report’s tabulated properties apply to the referenced rod standards, nominal diameters and evaluated products; they are not a general load chart for every rod sold under the same diameter.

For example, Hilti’s guide describes HIT-Z anchor rod use with HIT-HY 200 V3. That is a manufacturer-specific pairing, not permission to combine any threaded rod with any adhesive. Follow the current evaluation report, installation instructions, applicable code and project drawings.
How to choose the right threaded rod: a practical sequence
- Start with the governing document. Find the drawing, structural note, equipment manual or anchor-system approval that defines the connection. Record the required standard and any product designation.
- Confirm the load case and design method. For a structural or concrete connection, have the responsible design professional check tension, shear and combined actions where applicable. Do not select a grade from appearance or price.
- Match the specification and grade. Verify the standard, grade and required mechanical or chemical properties. For ASTM F1554 work, determine whether Grade 36, 55 or 105 is specified.
- Match diameter, thread and length. Check nominal diameter, thread series and pitch, overall length, projection and any required embedment. Confirm that the nuts, washers and couplers use the same thread.
- Select material and coating for the exposure. Identify moisture, salts, chemicals, temperature and contact with dissimilar metals. Choose the material or zinc coating named by the project requirements and verify that the hardware matches it.
- Confirm the configuration. Determine whether the design calls for straight all-thread, headed, bent or another anchor-rod form. Do not replace one form with another without approval.
- Verify system compatibility. For adhesive or insert anchors, check the exact rod, adhesive or insert, hole preparation, installation method and current approval. Keep the manufacturer’s limits with the installation record.
- Inspect before installation. Check markings, dimensions, thread condition, coating damage and hardware fit. Reject components that are bent, cracked, heavily corroded or impossible to identify.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Treating all-thread as a universal anchor: Use an anchor rod only where the specification or evaluated system allows it.
- Choosing the highest grade automatically: Grade 105 is not inherently correct; the connection, hardware and design must be suitable for it.
- Ignoring corrosion compatibility: Match rod, nuts, washers and protective finish to the exposure and isolate dissimilar metals when the design requires it.
- Using a product-table value as a load rating: A listed yield strength or diameter does not establish the capacity of a rod-and-concrete assembly.
- Mixing adhesive systems: Rod and adhesive combinations are approval-specific. Follow the exact system documentation.
- Leaving dimensions to the installer: Diameter, thread, length, projection and embedment should be resolved before material is ordered or cut.
What to put on a purchase order or specification
A useful description identifies the complete component rather than saying only “threaded rod.” Include the governing standard or manufacturer designation, grade, nominal diameter, thread, length, material, coating, configuration and required nuts and washers. For a concrete anchor, add the approved adhesive or insert system, installation instructions and design reference. If any item is missing, obtain clarification from the engineer or specifier before substituting a product.
Check current editions and product data before procurement. ASTM F1554-20 was the active standard listing identified for this guidance; manufacturer guides and ICC evaluation reports are revised, and a current edition may change product availability or installation requirements.
