The easiest inexpensive way to frame artwork is to adapt a standard or thrifted frame that already fits the piece. Choose a custom wood frame when the artwork has an unusual size, and build a floating frame when you want a contemporary presentation for stretched canvas. Each route can look intentional and modern, but the right choice depends on the artwork, the framing depth and how much cutting you are prepared to do.
For valuable or irreplaceable paper work, treat this as conservation rather than ordinary decorating. Use acid-free materials and reversible mounting methods; inexpensive display techniques are not automatically archival.

Start by identifying the artwork and the result you want. A paper print, a stretched canvas and an unusually sized original have different structural needs. The comparison below puts the least tool-intensive option first.
| Route | Best fit | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Ready-made or thrifted frame | Standard-size prints and a quick, low-tool project | Limited sizing and condition choices; you must check the depth and included components |
| Custom wood frame | Nonstandard dimensions or a hands-on woodworking project | Requires accurate measuring and cutting |
| Floating frame | Stretched canvas and a contemporary presentation | Requires a canvas-specific frame build and hardware |
| DIY framing kit | Anyone who wants supplied parts and instructions | Less control over sourcing individual materials; current kit contents must be checked |
Do not assume a frame is suitable because its outside dimensions look right. The opening must support the visible artwork or mat, and the frame must be deep enough for the glazing, mat, backing and any spacers. A shallow frame can force the artwork against the glass; a loose backing can let it shift.

Route 1: Adapt a ready-made or thrifted frame
This is usually the best budget starting point because the frame, finish and hanging hardware may already be supplied. It also minimizes cutting and joinery. A new standard frame works when the art matches a common opening; a thrifted frame can provide a more distinctive profile if its structure is sound.
Check the frame before committing
- Measure the frame’s inside opening, not just the outside edge, and compare it with the artwork or the mat opening you need.
- Check the rabbet depth: the glazing, mat, artwork and backing must fit without bowing the frame or pressing on the paper.
- Inspect the glazing for chips, scratches and cloudy plastic. Check that the backing board is flat and that the retaining clips or points still hold firmly.
- Look at the corners and hanging hardware. A loose mitre, warped rail or missing hardware can erase the time saved by using a ready-made frame.
- For a thrifted frame, clean the front and back gently and remove old tape or brittle paper only when doing so will not damage the frame.
Add visual space with a mat
A mat creates a deliberate border around the image and helps keep paper away from the glazing. A precut mat is often the simplest choice when the opening is a standard size. A mat cutter is optional, not a requirement for every inexpensive project; buy a precut mat or choose a frame that already includes one when custom cutting would add more work than value.
Choose a mat board that is appropriate to the artwork. The New York State Archives recommends acid-free matting and backing for paper-based treasures. Ordinary acidic board can discolor or embrittle paper over time, so do not present a decorative mat as archival protection unless its materials are identified as acid-free.
Assemble the frame
- Place the clean glazing into the frame and verify that it sits fully in the rabbet.
- Set the mat in place, then position the artwork behind the mat so the image is centered according to the intended border rather than the outer frame.
- Attach the paper with a method suited to its value and condition. For conservation-minded work, use archival photo corners, Japanese paper hinges with wheat starch paste, or gummed acid-free paper as appropriate.
- Add the backing without forcing the stack. If the retaining points no longer grip, replace them with compatible points or clips rather than compressing the artwork.
- Turn the frame over and check that no dust or stray fibers are trapped between the glazing and mat. Fit the hanging hardware for the frame’s orientation and weight.
For ordinary decorative reproductions, the assembly can be straightforward, but avoid permanent adhesives when you may later need to remove or reposition the piece. The attachment choice matters as much as the frame itself.
How to attach paper artwork safely
Paper expands and contracts with changes in humidity. A mount that holds every edge rigidly can cause cockling or tears, while an adhesive that seems convenient can stain the sheet. The New York State Archives identifies acid-free photo corners, Japanese paper hinges made with wheat starch paste and gummed acid-free paper as suitable options for paper-based treasures.

Do not use spray mount, rubber cement, glue, adhesive tape or pressure-sensitive backing for conservation framing. These products can become difficult to remove, migrate into the paper or leave residue. If the work is valuable, consult a paper conservator before mounting it; a low-cost display frame is not a substitute for a conservation enclosure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep the sheet from touching glass or acrylic by using a window mat or another appropriate spacer. Contact can trap moisture and transfer media to the glazing. The Archives specifically calls for glass when displaying powdery media such as chalk, charcoal or pastels, because those surfaces can be disturbed by contact and static. The correct glazing and spacing depend on the medium; there is no single frame specification for every artwork.
Route 2: Build a custom wood gallery frame
A custom wood frame earns its extra work when the artwork is a nonstandard size, when you need a precise border or when you want the frame itself to be part of the design. Beginner-oriented plans commonly use straight softwood strips, which are accessible and easy to shape. The quality of the measurements and joints matters more than an expensive species of wood.
Gather the basic materials
- Straight, dry softwood for the four rails
- A saw capable of accurate crosscuts and mitres
- Measuring tape or a reliable ruler, a square and a pencil
- Wood glue and a way to clamp the corners while they set
- Sandpaper and, if desired, small brads or screws for reinforcement
- Finish such as paint, stain or a clear coat, chosen after the joints are sound
- Glazing, mat or spacer, backing and hanging hardware appropriate to the artwork
Measure the opening and rails
Measure the artwork or the mat that will sit inside the frame at several points. Use the smallest consistent dimension when a sheet is slightly irregular, and decide whether the visible opening should be the art itself or a mat window. The opening must be large enough for the image while the rabbet or inner ledge must support the mat and backing.
From that opening, determine the rail lengths according to the width of the frame face and the type of joint you are cutting. Write the intended inside dimensions on your cut list before making any cuts. A test cut on scrap wood is worthwhile because a small error at each corner compounds into a visible gap.

Cut, dry-fit and join
- Cut the four rails and mark their inside faces so the orientation cannot be confused.
- Dry-fit all four corners on a flat surface. Check the inside opening with a square and verify that the artwork or mat can actually enter the frame.
- Apply a thin, even layer of wood glue to the mating faces, bring the corners together and clamp the assembly without twisting it.
- Measure the diagonals while the glue is wet. Equal diagonals are a practical check that the frame is square.
- After the glue cures, reinforce the joints with small brads or screws if the rail size and design permit. Fill visible holes and sand the face and edges progressively until they are smooth.
Do not sand away so much material that the opening changes. The inside ledge must remain continuous and strong enough to carry the glazing and backing.
Finish and fit the artwork
Test the finish on an offcut first. A painted frame can make simple softwood look architectural; a clear finish emphasizes grain but also makes uneven joints more visible. Keep finish off the rabbet where it could reduce the available depth.
Install glazing, a mat or spacer, the artwork and backing in the same order used for a ready-made frame. Leave enough room for the stack to sit flat. Use archival attachment methods for paper and never rely on the frame’s decorative finish to protect the sheet. Add hanging hardware only after the completed frame has been weighed and the hardware’s load rating is appropriate.
Route 3: Make a modern floating frame for stretched canvas
A floating frame is a different construction from a paper picture frame. It surrounds a stretched canvas while leaving a deliberate reveal between the canvas edge and the frame, so the artwork appears to hover inside the wood. This route is suited to gallery-wrapped or otherwise stretched canvas, not a loose paper sheet.

Plan the reveal and depth
Measure the canvas at several points, including its depth. Decide how much of the canvas edge should remain visible and how wide the wood should appear from the front. The outer frame must be large enough to create the chosen reveal on every side, while its interior must accommodate the canvas without rubbing.

Account for the canvas’s actual thickness and any stretcher-bar irregularities. A frame that is only slightly deeper than the canvas can bind at a corner; excessive clearance can make the reveal look uneven.
Build the outer frame
- Cut four wood strips to form the outer rectangle, using a consistent face width and accurate corner joints.
- Dry-fit the strips around the canvas and check the reveal from the front and both sides.
- Glue and clamp the corners on a flat surface, then verify that the frame is square before the adhesive cures.
- Sand and finish the frame before attaching the canvas. Mask the inner area if you want a crisp painted edge.
- Center the canvas from the back and attach it with canvas-appropriate brackets or other hardware that holds the stretcher bars without crushing them.
HGTV’s floating-frame project uses cut wood strips and attachment brackets, a useful model for the basic construction sequence. The exact bracket placement depends on the canvas and frame dimensions, so test the fit before tightening every fastener.
Keep the float even
Place the canvas on a flat surface and measure the reveal at several points before final tightening. Adjust the canvas rather than forcing a crooked frame into alignment. The front edge should not touch the painted canvas; the visible gap is part of the design and also prevents abrasion during installation.
When a DIY framing kit makes sense
A framing kit can be a middle path for readers who want supplied parts, mounting instructions and hanging hardware without sourcing every component. It offers less freedom over wood, glazing and backing than building from individual materials, and kit contents and availability change. Confirm the current dimensions, included hardware and mounting method before ordering, especially if the artwork is heavy or unusually deep.
Modern design decisions that cost little
- Use one strong finish. A single paint color or restrained clear coat usually looks more contemporary than several decorative treatments competing for attention.
- Repeat a border. For a group of works, consistent mat margins or a repeated frame face creates order even when the art differs.
- Respect the artwork’s scale. A narrow frame can disappear around a large piece; a broad frame can overwhelm a small drawing. Let the image determine the visual weight.
- Keep hardware out of sight. Centered, properly rated hardware and a level installation make an inexpensive frame look deliberate.
- Test the arrangement first. Lay frames on the floor or make paper templates before drilling. This prevents unnecessary holes and reveals whether the spacing feels balanced.
Troubleshooting common failures
The artwork will not fit
Recheck the opening, not the outer dimensions. A mat, backing or glazing panel may be larger than the frame’s usable depth. Do not force the stack; choose a deeper frame, thinner components or a different mat.

The paper is touching the glazing
Add a window mat or suitable spacer. If the frame cannot accept one, it is not an appropriate enclosure for that work, particularly in a humid environment or for powdery media.
The frame corners show gaps
Check the square and the cut angles with a dry fit. Small gaps usually come from inaccurate cuts, a twisted clamp-up or rails that are not the same length. Correct the joint before filling it with finish or putty.

The artwork shifts after hanging
Inspect the backing and retaining points, then verify that the attachment method supports the artwork without sliding. For paper, use reversible corners or hinges rather than adding more permanent adhesive.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Choose a ready-made or thrifted frame when the art is a standard size and you want the fewest tools.
- Choose a custom wood frame when the opening is unusual or the frame dimensions and finish are central to the design.
- Choose a floating frame when the artwork is stretched canvas and you want a visible reveal around it.
- Use a precut mat when a custom mat cutter would add unnecessary complexity.
- Use acid-free matting and backing, reversible attachment and a spacer for paper work that matters.
- Reserve glass for powdery media such as chalk, charcoal and pastels, following the New York State Archives’ guidance.
- Expect local material costs and kit contents to vary; no universal DIY savings figure applies to every frame or region.
