A hallway sets the tone for the rooms beyond it, so the best scheme is the one that suits both your architecture and the way your household arrives home. The three directions in the 2018 Better Homes & Gardens Australia feature “1 hallway, 3 gorgeous ways” are useful starting points: Essential is warm and quietly contemporary, Kinship is soft and collected, and Escapade is bright, playful and designed with young children in mind.

Start with the mood you want at the front door
Because a hallway is both a guest’s first impression and a route you use every day, decide what you want the arrival to feel like before choosing a colour. A restrained warm neutral can make the transition to living spaces feel gentle. A mix of softened colour and found objects can make the passage feel personal. Stronger colour, playful accessories and practical storage can turn a family entrance into an energetic, organised zone.
The three schemes are not room-size formulas. The original feature does not report measurements, light readings or a controlled test of how any colour changes perceived dimensions. Use the ideas as styling frameworks, then adapt the proportions, sheen and contrast to your own floors, doors, trim and daylight.

Essential: warm brown, crisp white and a considered door
Essential is the most restrained of the three looks. It combines a rustic brown feature wall with white surrounding walls, then uses the front door as a separate colour moment. The effect is warm and softly contemporary rather than starkly monochrome.

- Feature wall: Dulux Clay Court, described as a rustic brown.
- Other walls: Dulux Terrace White.
- Inside of the front door: Dulux Aquanamel Low Gloss in Dieskau.
These labels identify the 2018 project. If a named colour is no longer sold or has been reformulated, take the old name and a physical swatch to a paint counter and ask for a current equivalent; do not assume a similarly named colour will match.
How to build the look
- Choose the feature surface. Use the wall that naturally ends a sightline or sits behind a console, artwork or mirror. If the hall is very short, keep the feature to the end wall so the colour reads as a destination rather than a tunnel.
- Prepare the white walls. Fill dents, sand glossy patches, clean marks and spot-prime repairs before applying the light colour. White shows uneven preparation more readily than a mid-tone.
- Paint the door separately. The feature’s low-gloss Aquanamel treatment on the inside of the door gives the threshold its own identity. Remove or mask hardware carefully and follow the current product label for preparation, recoat time and ventilation.
- Keep furnishings edited. One narrow table, a framed print or a bowl is enough to support the calm character. Leave a clear walking line from the entry to the next room.
Using a table to influence the view
The feature says a table at the end of a hallway can make the passage appear wider. That is styling advice, not a measured spatial result. A shallow console can provide a visual stopping point and a place for keys while preserving circulation; measure the remaining walkway and door swings before installing one. If the hall is too tight, substitute a slim shelf or wall-mounted ledge.

Kinship: soft colour, collected objects and greenery
Kinship is calmer than Escapade but more expressive than Essential. Its character comes from combining a gentle base colour with a cooler feature wall, then layering objects that look gathered over time. The result should feel eclectic without becoming visually noisy.
The palette and arrangement
- Connecting walls: a soft mid-base colour such as Dulux Maiko.
- Feature wall: a cooler colour such as Dulux Rusky on the third wall.
- Accessories: collected or secondhand pieces, antique knick-knacks and greenery.
“Such as” matters here: the feature presents Maiko and Rusky as examples within a mood, not as a universal prescription. Existing timber, tile undertones and the colour of adjoining rooms should decide whether your current equivalents lean warmer or cooler.
How to layer a collected hallway
- Map the sightlines. Stand at the front door and note which two walls connect visually. Put the softer base on those surfaces so the transition feels continuous, reserving the cooler colour for the wall you want to notice first.
- Group objects by scale. Combine one larger anchor, such as a framed artwork or mirror, with smaller ceramics, books or antique-style pieces. Repetition of one material or colour keeps unrelated finds from looking accidental.
- Add living texture. A plant on a console, a hanging planter or a vase of cut greenery supplies the organic element described by the feature. Keep leaves and containers outside the door-clearance zone.
- Check the colour before committing. Paint a generous sample directly on the wall and leave it for several days. Observe it in morning, afternoon and artificial light, and view it from both ends of the hall.
Kinship works particularly well when the hall already contains meaningful objects. It does not require expensive antiques: the important idea is a sense of history and variety, balanced by a controlled colour relationship.

Escapade: a bright, family-friendly passage
Escapade is the boldest direction and was presented for a family with young children. It uses strong colour in selected areas, a graphic treatment for wall grooves and practical places to put the things that accumulate at the door.
The colour and pattern plan
- One side wall: Dulux Bondi, with the grooves left white to create a pinstripe effect.
- Back wall and ceiling: a softer mint green such as Dulux Soft Fresco.
- Accent colour: Dulux Bombay Pink used in accessories rather than across every surface.
Leaving grooves white is a precision job. Mask each groove or use a suitably narrow brush, keep the paint load controlled and remove tape while the coloured coat is still workable according to the product instructions. Test the technique on a scrap board or an inconspicuous section first.
Making the playful scheme usable
- Limit the strongest colour. Painting one side wall keeps Bondi as a graphic stripe instead of an all-over field. Repeat the accent pink in two or three small items so it looks intentional.
- Carry the mint overhead. Using the softer green on the back wall and ceiling creates a complete colour envelope. Protect light fittings, vents and cornices with careful masking.
- Use the end of the hall. The feature places ten-pin bowls at the hallway’s end as decoration and rainy-day entertainment. Treat this as a playful prop, and secure or relocate anything that could become a trip hazard.
- Contain arrivals. Baskets and hooks give bags, coats and school gear a designated home. Mount hooks at heights that work for adults and children, and anchor hardware to the wall structure rather than relying on paint or plaster alone.
Escapade is not only a colour choice; it is a management plan. The brighter backdrop can tolerate visual activity, while baskets and hooks prevent that activity from spreading across the floor.

Use the table as a decision aid, not a ranking. A dark, windowless hall may need a lighter version of any palette; a sunlit hall may make a soft colour look more intense at certain times. Existing flooring and adjacent rooms can also shift how the paint reads.
A reliable paint-sample process
The most transferable instruction in the feature is to test before painting. A small card under shop lighting cannot show how a colour behaves on your actual walls, beside your trim and beneath your bulbs.
- Buy a sample pot of the current colour or a carefully matched equivalent.
- Paint a large patch on the wall, or apply the sample to a movable board if you cannot mark the surface. Put it near corners, trim and the door so you can see the interaction.
- Leave it in place for several days. Check it in daylight, at dusk and with the lights on.
- Walk past it from both directions and look at it from the rooms that open onto the hall.
- Only then calculate litres, finish and the number of coats required from the current manufacturer’s data.
Do not judge a sample while it is wet. The dried colour and the final sheen are what you will live with, and a low-gloss, eggshell or washable finish can change the apparent depth compared with a flat patch.

Adapting the ideas to a narrow or awkward hallway
The feature’s table-at-the-end suggestion is one visual option, but circulation comes first. Mark the opening of every door, cupboard and drawer on the floor with tape. Any console, bench or basket must sit outside those arcs and leave a comfortable route for people carrying bags.

A mirror can provide a final visual point without consuming walking width, while a single feature wall preserves contrast without enclosing the entire passage in a dark tone. These are practical adaptations, not measured guarantees that a hall will become physically wider.
Storage details for a busy entrance
Escapade explicitly recommends baskets and hooks for incoming clutter, and the same principle can support the other schemes without changing their mood. Choose containers that fit the people using them: a low basket for children’s shoes, a hook for each regular user and one spare for guests. Labeling is optional, but assigning a home to keys, hats and bags is more effective than adding decorative storage with no routine behind it.
Keep the display area separate from the drop zone. In Essential, that might mean an uncluttered table with one tray; in Kinship, a console can hold the collected objects while hooks sit on an adjacent wall; in Escapade, baskets can carry the visual energy while protecting the walking route.
