A tic-tac-toe game board is a three-by-three grid with nine spaces. Two players take turns marking empty spaces with X and O—or any two distinct markers—and the first to make a line of three horizontally, vertically or diagonally wins. You can draw the grid on paper; a manufactured board is optional.
What a tic-tac-toe board looks like
The classic board has three rows and three columns. The U.S. Department of Education-hosted strategy-games resource describes two people playing on this nine-square array, with each player using a distinctive marker or color. The game is also known as noughts and crosses; an arXiv paper describes the same 3×3 grid and three-in-a-row win condition.

How to set up and play
- Make the grid. Draw or place a three-by-three board with nine empty cells.
- Choose markers. Use X and O, or two distinct colors or shapes. The Department of Education-hosted resource describes giving each player five markers.
- Take turns. Players alternate, placing one marker in an empty cell on each turn.
- Check for a win. The first player to make a horizontal, vertical or diagonal line of three matching markers wins.
Paper board or reusable set?
A drawn grid and ordinary markers are enough for the game. A reusable set may be convenient for repeat play, travel or classroom activities, but the available sources do not establish that a particular material, size or brand is better.

The Hasbro instructions also describe a larger variation made from nine small tic-tac-toe boards. That is a variation, not a requirement for playing the basic game.

Focus on practical fit rather than assuming one board type is best. Consider whether the grid is easy to see, whether the markers are easy for the intended players to handle, and whether the set is simple to carry and store. For a one-off activity, drawing a grid avoids the need for a special set; for repeated use, a reusable board and pieces can be handy.
