A TimberTech deck is not one uniform product. The brand sells engineered decking in two main material families—Advanced PVC and composite—divided into collections with different colors, profiles, fastener systems, care instructions, and warranty terms. Choose the collection first, then match its installation guide, fasteners, cleaning method, and warranty document to that exact board.

What is a TimberTech deck made of?

TimberTech’s decking overview identifies two engineered material families: Advanced PVC and composite. Both are manufactured decking products rather than solid-sawn wood, but their published specifications are collection-specific. A statement that applies to one line should not automatically be applied to every TimberTech board.

Advanced PVC

Advanced PVC boards use a cellular-PVC construction. TimberTech markets selected Advanced PVC collections for dimensional stability, realistic wood visuals, and reduced routine maintenance compared with a traditional wood deck. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent laboratory findings. Confirm the exact color range, board dimensions, edge profile, and surface features on the collection page and current technical guide before ordering.

Washable and reusable for multiple projects.

Composite

Composite boards combine wood fibers and polymers and are offered in several TimberTech collections. Texture, color variation, profile, and warranty duration differ by collection. Do not use the care or installation instructions for an Advanced PVC product when installing a composite product unless the applicable guide explicitly says they are the same.

Wood alternatives and project fit

Wood remains another legitimate choice, particularly when a project calls for a specific species, a different initial budget, or a finish that will be renewed over time. A fair comparison should include the material and collection, appearance, available widths and lengths, board profile, compatible fasteners, local weather exposure, cleaning requirements, exact warranty language, and complete installed quotes. The available manufacturer material does not establish a neutral lifetime-cost winner or a head-to-head performance winner.

Which TimberTech decking is right for me?

  1. Define exposure. Note direct sun, shade, reflected heat, rain, snow, freeze-thaw cycles, standing water, and proximity to pools or salt air. Ask the installer how those conditions affect the selected collection’s technical requirements.
  2. Choose the material family. Compare the Advanced PVC and composite collections that are actually available in your preferred color and board profile.
  3. Confirm dimensions. Check the current width, length, thickness, and edge treatment. A grooved board and a square-shouldered board are not interchangeable for fastening.
  4. Review the warranty. Read the document for the exact collection and purchase date, including exclusions, purchaser eligibility, commercial-use rules, maintenance duties, and any registration requirements.
  5. Price the complete build. Obtain installed quotes that include framing, stairs, fascia, fasteners, delivery, disposal, permits, and labor—not just the deck-board price.

TimberTech’s Landmark page describes its own product as cooler than many other deck boards. That is a manufacturer claim, not a guaranteed surface temperature or a promise that the deck will remain comfortable in every climate. Any dark board in direct sun can become hot, so plan shade and barefoot-use expectations accordingly.

Board profiles and the fasteners they require

The edge profile determines how a board is attached. Before buying fasteners, identify whether the selected board is grooved on the sides or has a square shoulder. Then follow the installation guide for that collection.

Board situation Fastener information TimberTech publishes What to verify before installation
Grooved decking CONCEALoc hidden fasteners are identified for grooved Harvest Advanced PVC boards. Confirm that the exact Harvest board, starter clips, end clips, and screw specifications match the current guide.
Square-shouldered Harvest boards TimberTech lists SIDELoc, Cortex, or TOPLoc options for the applicable square-shouldered boards. Check which system is approved for the selected collection, board location, and fascia or stair application.

“Hidden fasteners” describes the finished appearance, not universal compatibility. CONCEALoc should not be assumed to fit every TimberTech groove or every manufacturer’s board. Mixing clips, screws, or plugs from different systems can affect holding power, appearance, and warranty coverage. Keep the product boxes and installation guide with the project records.

How to plan a TimberTech installation

TimberTech provides collection-specific installation guides and videos. Use the guide that matches the material family, collection, board profile, and application. A deck, stair, picture-frame border, breaker board, or fascia detail may require a different fastening sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before ordering materials

  • Measure the finished deck, stairs, landings, borders, and fascia separately.
  • Choose board orientation and decide where seams, borders, and color transitions will fall.
  • Confirm that the selected lengths can be handled and delivered to the site.
  • Ask the local building department which permits, inspections, guards, stairs, and structural rules apply.
  • Have the design reviewed by a licensed architect, engineer, or local building official before installation, as TimberTech’s FAQ advises.

During installation

  1. Read the current technical and installation documents completely before cutting boards.
  2. Prepare the framing and drainage details to the guide and local code; do not substitute a generic spacing or span chart.
  3. Sort boards by color and length before fastening so the intended visual pattern is preserved.
  4. Use only the approved fastener system for each profile. Follow the guide’s pilot-hole, screw-depth, clip, and edge-detail instructions.
  5. Install trim, fascia, stairs, and accessories according to their own instructions, then inspect the finished surface for proud screws, damaged edges, or debris.

Generic online advice can conflict with a collection’s current requirements. If the guide, packaging, and retailer description disagree, pause the work and obtain clarification from TimberTech or the qualified installer before cutting or fastening.

How do I clean a TimberTech deck?

Use the TimberTech care guide for the actual product. The manufacturer specifically cautions that several cleaners marketed for composite decking may not be appropriate for its current capped products. Read every label and ask the cleaner manufacturer how its ingredients affect plastic before applying it.

Routine cleaning

  1. Remove leaves, soil, and other loose debris with a soft broom or a leaf blower set to a safe distance.
  2. Rinse the surface with water so grit is not rubbed into the finish.
  3. Use only a cleaner identified as compatible with the exact TimberTech product, following its dilution, dwell-time, temperature, and rinsing directions.
  4. Scrub with a soft-bristle brush in the direction recommended by the care guide, then rinse thoroughly so residue does not dry on the boards.
  5. Test any unfamiliar product on a small, inconspicuous area first and inspect the result after it dries.

Do not assume that a cleaner safe for an older composite board is safe for a capped PVC or composite surface. Avoid improvised solvents, abrasive powders, and unapproved coatings. Keep records of the product used and the cleaning date if warranty documentation requires evidence of maintenance.

Spills, stains, and pressure washing

Address food, grease, rust, tannin, and algae stains according to the current care guide rather than treating every mark with the same chemical. If pressure washing is permitted for the specific collection, the guide’s distance, pressure, nozzle, and direction limits control; exceeding them can damage the cap or texture. When the guide does not approve a method, use a gentler alternative or ask TimberTech for written guidance.

Can you paint or stain TimberTech decking?

TimberTech says it does not recommend painting or staining its decking. That matters for a painting contractor: a deck coating is not a routine substitute for choosing the correct color at purchase. Paint or stain can change slip, adhesion, appearance, cleaning behavior, and warranty eligibility. Do not apply a third-party coating simply because it is labeled for “composite decking.” If a color change is essential, obtain product-specific written guidance before proceeding and understand that the manufacturer’s recommendation remains not to paint or stain the decking.

How long is the TimberTech warranty?

Warranty coverage depends on the collection, the effective date of the document, the purchaser, and compliance with installation and care requirements. TimberTech’s current overview lists the following broad terms:

Material family Published warranty pattern Important qualification
Advanced PVC, specified collections Limited Lifetime Product Warranty; 50-year or 35-year Fade & Stain Limited Warranty, depending on collection. These terms apply only to the collections identified in the applicable warranty document, not automatically to every Advanced PVC board.
Composite collections Product and Fade & Stain Limited Warranties of 25 to 30 years, depending on collection. The exact term, coverage, exclusions, and effective date must be checked for the purchased collection.

A “limited lifetime” or multi-decade fade term is a warranty duration, not a measured service-life prediction. Warranty documents commonly limit remedies, exclude certain damage, distinguish residential from commercial use, and may not pay for every installation expense. Preserve invoices, product labels, photographs, and maintenance records. Read the complete document that applies to the purchase date rather than relying on a headline term.

Installation labor protection

TimberTech’s FAQ says registered TimberTech contractors who install according to the instructions may qualify for additional limited replacement-labor protection, subject to that program’s requirements. This is separate from assuming that all labor, redesign, removal, or consequential costs are covered. Ask the contractor what registration and documentation are required before work begins.

Common planning mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Ordering by color alone: verify the collection, profile, dimensions, and warranty before paying a deposit.
  • Buying fasteners after delivery: select the approved system while the board profile is still being chosen.
  • Using generic cleaning advice: follow the care guide for the current capped product and check chemical compatibility.
  • Promising a cool surface: explain that all decking can become hot in direct sun; Landmark’s cooler description is a manufacturer comparison, not a temperature guarantee.
  • Assuming the warranty covers installation: review labor provisions, exclusions, purchaser type, and contractor-registration rules in writing.
  • Skipping design review: have the plan checked by a licensed professional or local building official before installation.

A practical handoff checklist for homeowners and painters

  • Record the exact TimberTech collection, color, board profile, and purchase date.
  • Keep the current installation guide, care guide, warranty document, invoices, and fastener packaging.
  • Document the approved cleaner and the dates of routine maintenance.
  • Tell painting crews that TimberTech does not recommend painting or staining the decking; protect the boards from overspray, solvents, and abrasive cleanup.
  • Photograph any suspected defect before attempting aggressive cleaning, repair, or coating.
  • Contact TimberTech or the installer when instructions conflict instead of relying on a generic composite-deck tutorial.

Bottom line for choosing a TimberTech deck

TimberTech can be a sensible low-maintenance decking option when the collection is selected for the site and installed exactly as specified. The critical decisions are not just color and price: they are Advanced PVC versus composite, board profile, compatible fasteners, exposure, approved care methods, and the warranty document tied to the purchase. Treat every performance, temperature, and durability statement as collection-specific manufacturer information, and make the final choice only after comparing complete installed quotes and local requirements.
