To hand piece accurately, mark the seam lines and matching points on the wrong side of each patch, align the patches right sides together, and sew a short running stitch from one marked point to the next. Stop at the marks rather than stitching through seam allowances; that keeps intersections flexible for pressing and quilting.

What you need for hand piecing

  • A thin sharps or betweens needle. Size 10 sharps are a common choice. Quilter Jo Morton uses a Tulip size 10 big-eye needle.
  • 50-weight, 100% cotton thread. Morton names Aurifil 50-weight cotton as an example for small projects.
  • A clear quilting ruler, pencil, paper scissors and thin cardboard for templates.
  • Fine pins, used sparingly to prevent holes or fabric distortion.

Choose a needle that is thin enough to pass easily through the fabric while remaining comfortable to handle. Thread the needle with a manageable length so it is less likely to tangle as you sew.

Prepare templates and mark the patches

Make templates to the finished size of each patch: the template edge represents the sewing line, not the cutting line. The American Quilter’s Society (AQS) recommends tracing the finished patch size onto single-layer cardboard, cutting the template on the line and labeling its size. Place the template on the fabric and trace around it, leaving extra fabric outside the drawn line for the seam allowance. Do not cut on the drawn sewing line.

Use a clear ruler and pencil to mark the seam lines and matching dots on the wrong side of each fabric piece. The dots indicate where a seam begins or ends and where seams meet. Accurate marks make it easier to align pieces and stop the stitches at the right places.

How to sew a hand-pieced seam

  1. Place the patches right sides together and align their marked seam lines and matching dots. Pin only if needed. On a short seam, one pin can hold the starting corners while you bring the far corners into alignment as you sew.
  2. At the first matching point, make a small securing stitch. Then sew a short running stitch along the marked line. A general guide recommends stitches about 1/8 inch long, taking four to six stitches before pulling the thread through.
  3. Sew only from the starting dot to the ending dot. Keep the seam allowance beyond each dot free of stitches.
  4. Secure the thread at the endpoint with backstitches. For a seam longer than 1½ inches, Morton recommends adding a backstitch at the midpoint as well.
  5. Check the underside frequently to make sure the needle is following the marked line and the thread has not caught or puckered the fabric.

Morton’s no-knot approach uses three backstitches to lock each end, then leaves a small tail after clipping the thread. This is one securing method; the essential point is to anchor the seam without extending it beyond the marked endpoints.

Keep intersections and seam allowances free

When a seam reaches a marked intersection, stop at the mark and secure the stitches there. To continue along a seam that meets it, pass the needle through the seam just above the existing stitches, then carry on along the next marked line. This avoids sewing the seam allowances down, leaving them available for later pressing and quilting.

Assemble patches into rows with their seams aligned, then finger-press each row consistently. Since hand piecing does not stitch across seam allowances, you can choose or change the direction in which you press the seams.

How to sew an inset or Y seam by hand

  1. Align and pin one side of the inset piece to its neighboring patch.
  2. Sew along the marked line to the end dot, stopping precisely at the dot. Take a backstitch to secure the seam.
  3. Park the needle in the seam allowance without stitching through it.
  4. Reposition and pin the next side, aligning its marks and dots, then continue sewing from the marked point.

The important distinction is that the needle may pass through a seam allowance to reposition between seam lines, but the stitches should not secure that allowance. Precise endpoint marks give the fabric room to pivot at the junction.

Hand piecing or machine piecing?

Consideration Hand piecing Machine piecing
Speed Slower, especially across many seams. Substantially faster for long straight seams and repetitive production.
Portability Portable; the work can be done without a sewing machine. Requires access to a sewing machine and its setup.
Control Offers fine control over small mismatches, intersections and awkward seams. Efficient for consistent straight seams, but less convenient for some awkward junctions.
Working rhythm Suited to makers who enjoy a slower, portable process and direct control of each seam. Suited to makers prioritizing speed on repeated or long seams.

Choose the method that fits the shape of the blocks and the pace you want. Hand piecing is useful when portability or control at a tricky intersection matters; a machine is the practical choice when long straight seams need to be sewn quickly. Morton describes hand piecing as her favorite assembly method, noting that leaving seam allowances unstitched lets her change seam direction and that the practice improved her hand quilting.
