A printed fabric panel can become a quick quilt, a framed wall hanging, or a smaller project such as a pillow or tote front. Choose the project before cutting: the printed design, usable margins, and panel dimensions determine what can be preserved and how much finishing room you need.

Choose a project that suits the panel
Start by measuring the panel and identifying the part of the print you want to keep. Account for seam allowances and the finished edge before deciding whether to leave the image intact, add borders, or cut it into pieces.
| Project | Good fit when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Quilt the panel mostly intact | The print works as a focal image and you want a relatively direct quilt project. | The panel dimensions constrain the quilt size, and you still need to layer, quilt, and finish its edges. |
| Add borders | You want to frame the image or increase the quilt’s dimensions. | Additional fabric and seams mean border lengths need careful measuring to keep the quilt square. |
| Slice into rows or squares | The design has motifs that remain effective when separated, and you want to piece them into a larger top. | Cutting and assembly take more work, and seams may hide parts of the print. |
| Make a wall hanging | The panel works as a smaller focal display. | You need a suitable edge and hanging finish; it is not a bedding project. |
| Make a pillow, runner, or bag section | A panel or motif fits a smaller sewn object. | Plan for the object’s dimensions and seams. For a pillow, check the usable design area before trimming. |
Other layout possibilities include using panel squares as blocks, piecing units around a panel, or placing a panel as a wide border around piecing. Missouri Star’s border tutorial demonstrates fence-rail, offset-brick, and pinwheel approaches; these are options to adapt to the print and desired finished size, not a ranking of best methods.

Inspect and plan before cutting
Check the printed boundary, selvage, and margins on all sides. Fabric edges and printed artwork do not always align, and a panel may be slightly out of square. Decide whether you will preserve the entire image, isolate particular motifs, or divide it into rows or squares before you trim.
- Lay the panel flat and identify the design area that must remain visible.
- Position a ruler against the intended design boundary, rather than assuming the raw edge is straight, and trim each side deliberately.
- Leave enough fabric for the seam allowance and the planned binding or other edge finish.
For one specific pattern, Utah State University Extension recommends trimming with a quarter-inch seam allowance around the panel design. Treat that as guidance for that pattern, not a universal allowance: a motif or lettering that meets a seam may need a different cutting plan. See the Panel Quilt with Prairie Points pattern.

- The Forest Whisper collection by Timeless Treasures evokes the gentle hush of a woodland sanctuary, where nature's quiet elegance takes center stage. Featuring digitally printed florals, butterflies, and textured motifs in soft blues, greens, yellows, and teals, each design captures the serenity of a blooming garden bathed in dappled light. Delicate detailing and vibrant hues lend a painterly, almost three-dimensional quality to the fabrics, making them ideal for projects that celebrate tranquility and natural beauty.
- THIS FABRIC IS SOLD BY THE PANEL! This panel measures about 24.5" wide x 44.5" tall (excluding the selvage edges).
- 100% cotton fabric. Pre-wash, machine wash warm, non-chlorine bleach, tumble dry low, use cool iron.
- Width: 44/45" inches
- Weight: 144 gm/sq m
If the panel is wonky, AllPeopleQuilt suggests stretching along the bias in the opposite direction. Fabric and printing can behave differently, so use this cautiously: check whether the print is becoming distorted and stop if it does not respond as intended. For general panel-specific advice, see AllPeopleQuilt’s tips for using fabric panels.
Add borders without building in a skew
Measure through the center of the panel lengthwise and widthwise rather than relying on potentially uneven edges. AllPeopleQuilt recommends using matching lengths for opposing side borders, then measuring and matching the top and bottom borders. Its method adds the side borders first, followed by the top and bottom. The aim is to frame the measured center and avoid letting an uneven panel edge dictate the finished shape.

Keep the panel on top when sewing border strips, as AllPeopleQuilt advises. Seeing the panel while you sew makes it easier to monitor alignment and adjust as needed. Border width is a design choice; the sources do not establish one ideal width for every panel.
Finish the project for its intended use
For a quick quilt
Layer the panel with batting and backing, quilt through the layers, then bind the edges. AllPeopleQuilt also describes tying through the layers with yarn or thick cotton thread at 4- to 6-inch intervals as a faster alternative. That interval is the source’s example, not a rule for every batting or fabric; follow the material maker’s guidance for suitable tie spacing and construction.

For a wall hanging or smaller sewn object
Choose the finish around how the piece will be used. A wall hanging needs a finished edge and a way to hang it. A pillow, runner, or bag section needs enough room for its seams and finished dimensions. A Quilting Life describes using panels for wall hangings, throw quilts, pillows, table runners, and tote-bag fronts or sections; see its project examples.

Controlled cutting may call for a quilting ruler, rotary cutter, and cutting mat. Borders or piecing require coordinating fabric; a quilt also needs batting, backing, thread, and binding materials. You do not need every supply for every project, and the sources do not establish that you must buy a new tool set.

The Utah State University Extension pattern lists a panel, a charm pack or sixteen 5-inch squares, backing, binding, a sewing machine, thread, and basic sewing supplies. Missouri Star’s border tutorial uses a panel, precut 10-inch squares, and backing. These are materials for those examples, not universal shopping lists.
Check care instructions for your particular panel
Do not assume all panels can be washed or pressed the same way. A Quilting Life’s author reports that Moda panels she used washed much like quilting cotton; that is personal experience with those panels, not a general care standard. Check the panel label or maker’s instructions for fiber content and care. A universal wash setting or shrinkage rate is not established by these project sources.
