Homespun is straightforward to sew once you account for its looser weave: prewash it when finished dimensions matter, stabilize it before cutting, and protect seams from fraying. Its yarn-dyed colors usually look similar on both sides, but check the actual fabric before deciding which side to use.
What makes homespun different?
Homespun is a lightweight woven fabric often sold in solids, stripes, plaids, and ikat-like patterns. Its yarns are dyed before weaving, so color generally shows on both sides. The slightly irregular look is part of its appeal, but the looser weave can stretch and unravel more readily than traditional quilting cotton. American Patchwork & Quilting advises extra care when sewing it for this reason.

Prepare homespun before cutting
Choose whether to prewash
Prewash homespun if precise finished dimensions matter or if you plan to combine it with quilting cotton. Wash and dry both fabrics using the care method intended for the finished project; otherwise, they may shrink by different amounts later. National Quilters Circle gives an approximate 3–10% shrinkage range for homespun, but its page does not state a publication year, and the figure is an instructional estimate rather than a specification for every fabric. If you prefer the extra shrinkage and softer, crinkled look that can develop after washing, you can leave homespun unwashed. Plan for size changes, and consider keeping the project homespun-only to avoid differential shrinkage with quilting cotton.

Stabilize, square, and plan
- Starch if it suits the project. Starch can help the cloth hold its shape during cutting and feed more steadily under the machine. American Patchwork & Quilting recommends starching homespun. Starch is a handling aid, not a replacement for prewashing; test first or omit it if you want to preserve a softer hand or the care instructions advise against it.
- Press and straighten the grain after washing. Square the fabric before cutting, then check that stripes or plaid repeats sit in the direction you intend.
- Allow extra yardage. Account for possible shrinkage, fraying, pattern matching, and test pieces.
Cut and sew without stretching or shifting
- Test the setup on scraps. Sew a sample seam, press it, and wash it to see how the fabric and seam behave. There is no single stitch length established for every homespun, so use the test to judge your own fabric and machine.
- Pin generously. The loose weave can stretch and layers can shift. Use enough pins to keep edges and any pattern repeats aligned.
- Start on a leader strip. Sew onto a scrap strip first, then continue onto the homespun. This helps keep the fabric from being pulled down beneath the presser foot. American Patchwork & Quilting
- Use a wider seam allowance where the pattern permits. American Patchwork & Quilting recommends 3/8 inch to help protect homespun from unraveling. Follow the pattern where that allowance is not suitable.
Keep seams from fraying
For garments and projects that will be handled or laundered frequently, finish seam allowances with an overcast stitch, a flat-felled seam, or a serger. Stay-stitch vulnerable cut edges such as necklines before they stretch. Threads and Sew Essential discuss durable seam-finishing methods.
Raw, clipped seams can be intentional in rag-style projects, where fraying creates the surface effect. Keep the stitching line secure and follow the project pattern’s directions; raw edges are not the best choice for every item.

Handle plaids, stripes, and the two fabric sides
Because homespun is yarn-dyed, its two sides usually look alike, so it often has no obvious right and wrong side. Still, inspect the bolt: subtle color variation, nap, or a directional design may make one side or orientation preferable. Plaids and stripes have repeats that can be matched or deliberately offset; decide on the layout before cutting and allow enough fabric for matching.

Homespun dyes may run. For the first wash, follow the manufacturer’s care instructions and wash a sample or the first project separately if color transfer is a concern. American Patchwork & Quilting recommends color-catcher sheets when washing a homespun quilt. Expect an unpreshrunk quilt to shrink and soften into a more crinkled texture.

Choose a method for your project
| Choice | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Prewashed homespun | Finished sizing matters, or homespun will be mixed with quilting cotton. | Less additional shrinkage remains to create a post-wash crinkle. |
| Unwashed homespun | You want more post-wash shrinkage and a softer, crinkled finish. | Allow for size change; mixed fabrics may shrink differently. |
| Homespun-only quilt | You want to avoid differences between homespun and quilting cotton. | Homespun can still shrink and may release dye in washing. |
| Homespun mixed with quilting cotton | You want to combine the fabrics in one project. | Prewash both using the planned finished-item laundering method. |
| Finished seams | Garments, durable items, and projects that will see heavy handling. | Requires a suitable finishing method and may add time or bulk. |
| Raw clipped seams | Rag-style projects designed to show frayed edges. | Use a secure stitch line; the technique is not suited to every project. |
