For model painters and other makers, three workshop habits can make a stalled build easier to move forward: score and snap styrene for scratch-built parts, use a relevant video to learn about an unfamiliar tool-maintenance task, and put an unproductive project aside before returning to it with fresh eyes. These tips come from Gareth Branwyn’s September 7, 2018, Make: roundup; they are practical suggestions and one personal airbrush-cleaning story, not a controlled comparison or universal guide.

Cut styrene sheet for scratch-built model parts

Styrene sheet, also called plasticard, is useful for prototyping and scratch-building model components. For a straight cut, Branwyn describes scoring the sheet and snapping it along the scored line instead of cutting all the way through. The score guides the break and can make it quicker to lay out and separate simple shapes.

Make an internal opening

The roundup also describes using a hobby knife and the score-and-break approach to form an opening inside a sheet. Treat this as a technique to try on the material and shape at hand; the article does not compare it with other cutting methods or establish which shapes it suits best.

Join and position small pieces

Branwyn calls acrylic plastic cement the “best and fastest” way to join styrene and gives Weld-On #3 as an example. That is the article’s characterization, not a comparative test. It describes using the bottom of a soda can as a small dispenser for cement applied with a glue brush, then touching tiny components to the cement and lifting them into place with a new, sharp hobby-knife tip. These are workshop suggestions, not current product or safety guidance.

LITKO Plasticard Styrene Sheets | Variety Thickness Pack | White | 8x10
  • [VARIETY THICKNESS PACK - 9 SHEETS, 8x10 INCH] Three sheets of .020", three of .030", two of .040" and one of .060". Four gauges covering most of a build: thin for skinning and curves, mid for walls that stand up on their own, and .060" for anything that must not flex. The sensible first plasticard order, and the quickest way to learn how differently each thickness cuts, bends and holds a shape.
  • [WHAT MODELERS BUILD WITH IT] Model railroading, architectural models, military and naval models, wargame terrain, dioramas and display bases. Sheet styrene is the scratch-builder's default material: walls, roofs, decking, hull plating, signage, shims and jigs all start as a flat sheet. Also the standard stock for kitbashing, where a plain sheet fills the gap two kits leave behind.
  • [SCORE AND SNAP, DON'T CUT THROUGH] Draw a fresh blade along a steel rule two or three times to cut a groove, then flex the sheet and it breaks clean along the line. Trying to cut all the way through wanders and tears. Thin gauges take scissors for rough shapes. The same technique scribes planking, siding and panel lines straight into the surface.
  • [WELDS WITH SOLVENT CEMENT, TAKES ANY PAINT] Polystyrene solvent cement softens both faces and fuses them into one piece, which is stronger than any glue joint — capillary cements wick straight into a seam. Superglue and epoxy work too. The matte white surface takes acrylics, enamels and rattle-can primer directly, with no sanding or sealing first.
  • [PROUDLY DOMESTIC QUALITY] LITKO proudly designs, manufactures, packages, and supports all our products in the USA. We utilize raw materials from both domestic and international sources, sourced from trusted suppliers, to ensure a superior hobby experience over mass-produced imports.

Use video to investigate an unfamiliar maintenance task

Branwyn recounts clogging an Iwata airbrush with dried acrylic paint. After searching YouTube for “cleaning an airbrush,” he found a Tested maintenance video featuring Frank and Norm and followed it to clean, lubricate, and reassemble the brush. The useful takeaway is the search strategy: a focused phrase can surface a visual walkthrough when a task is unfamiliar.

This is one reported experience, not instructions for every airbrush. Construction and maintenance requirements can differ, so consult the manual for your specific model before disassembly, cleaning, or lubrication.

Turn the workpiece when the tool is awkward

A related small-shop tip is to rotate the workpiece or another assembly part rather than the tool if that makes a delicate operation easier. The roundup illustrates the idea with tightening an airbrush needle-tip guide. It is a reminder to reconsider which part should move when a task feels cramped, rather than forcing an awkward tool position.

What to try when a project stops moving

Box and shelve it for a while

At a Comic-Con session, Adam Savage and Richard Taylor discussed maker’s block. Branwyn reports Savage’s suggestion to box up an unproductive project, shelve it, and return to it after leaving it alone for a while. This is a possible way to create distance from a stuck project, not a guaranteed remedy.

Clear Polystyrene Flexible Plastic Board Sheet 8.5" x 11" (.020 Thick) , Ideal for Modeling Projects, Displays, Plastic Sheets for Crafts, Styrene Sheets Durable (5-Pack)
  • VERSATILE AND SAFE TO USE Polystyrene sheets have a good combination of dimensional strength, impact resistance and heat resistance. It is also non-toxic, odorless, easy to fabricate making them perfectly safe and suitable for an array of applications. These characteristics make high impact styrene a popular and common choice for model building, signage making, POP or Craft displays, and other fixtures we see on a day-to-day basis.
  • GOOD DIMENSIONAL STABILITY These styrene plastic sheets are easy to fabricate and assemble with adhesives or solvents. any sheet can be customized by length, thickness, and width to suit your particular set of needs. Easy to cut or work using laser, table saw, jigsaw drill, router, or bandsaw; with such exceptional dimensional stability and strength, styrene plastic is the obvious choice for machining a wide variety of prototypes and models.
  • COMMON USE HIGH IMPACT STYRENE PLASTIC Styrene plastic is often used for framing, retail displays, due to its shatter-resistant and light-weight qualities. It is also cost-effective material, making it a good choice if you are looking for a more affordable option. Whether bent, bonded, cut, drilled, fabricated, molded, painted, or recycled to make something utterly unique, you won’t be disappointed by choosing styrene plastic for your next project.
  • OUTSTANDING THERMOFORMING CHARACTERISTICS These plastic sheets are also categorized as a standard material, due to its tough, impact strength, a high melt strength making them easy to deep draw or thermoform. It features good dimension stability and fabricates nicely. Impact strength is maintained in tests, and it is quite affordable. This is a reason why it is so widely used across so many industries and applications.
  • LOW-COST SOLUTION Its excellent dimensional stability, an affinity for paint, and glue make it an obvious choice for machining pre-production prototypes. Our clear polystyrene board is similar to acrylic in use and plastic sheets are as transparent as glass. Our goal is to reduce your environmental impact; these Polystyrene Plastic sheets are fully recyclable with minimal loss of its properties.

Set an artificial deadline

The discussion also covered setting artificial deadlines for open-ended hobby projects. A self-imposed date can give a project a boundary when there is no external deadline; the roundup presents it as an idea discussed by the speakers, not a proven productivity method.

Make tools and materials easier to find

The roundup includes an excerpt attributed to Adam Savage under the heading “ORGANIZE FOR FIRST ORDER RETRIEVABILITY.” Its practical point is captured in the excerpt’s sentence: “This can help reduce time to find and get your tools and materials.” The attribution in the article is “[VIA ADAM SAVAGE].”
