The right twin-lens reflex (TLR) depends on what matters most to you: a compact fixed-lens camera, a flexible interchangeable-lens system, or a particular balance of features and handling. There is no defensible universal top-five ranking here: the available guides do not provide comparable current prices or a shared scoring test. The five choices below are useful models and families to compare, not a ranked verdict.
How a TLR works—and what that means in use
A twin-lens reflex camera has one lens for viewing and a separate lens for taking the photograph. In the cited buyer guide’s description, the viewing image stays visible during exposure because the mirror does not move. That arrangement gives TLRs a distinctive waist-level viewing experience, but the separate lenses and finder design are part of the camera’s operation, not interchangeable with a single-lens reflex viewfinder.
Many classic Rolleiflex, Rolleicord and Yashica models use fixed lenses. Mamiya’s C-series is the notable alternative: it accepts interchangeable lens pairs, bringing more framing options and close-focusing flexibility at the cost of a larger, heavier system.

1. Rolleiflex: a fixed-lens classic
Consider a Rolleiflex if you want a traditional fixed-lens TLR rather than a system built around swapping lenses. The exact specification depends on the model and version, so identify the specific camera rather than buying on the family name alone. Check the finder, shutter, focusing and meter, if fitted, on the individual body.
2. Rolleicord: another fixed-lens option
Rolleicord models offer another route into a fixed-lens TLR. As with Rolleiflex, features vary across models; do not assume that a meter or a particular finder configuration is present. Compare the condition and operation of the specific camera against your needs, not just its label.

3. Yashica TLRs: compare the exact variant
Yashica made both metered and unmetered TLR variants, so verify whether the particular body has a meter and whether it works. The family name alone does not establish the camera’s metering setup. If the camera lacks a working meter, an external handheld meter is an option rather than a requirement built into every purchase.

A secondary C220/C330 comparison describes the C220 as lighter and simpler than the C330. It is still an interchangeable-lens, square-format system, so consider the weight and cost of the body together with the lens pair you will actually use.

5. Mamiya C330: more features, more system to carry
The same comparison characterizes the C330 as heavier and more feature-rich than the C220. Mamiya’s C330S manual lists seven focal lengths—55mm, 65mm, 80mm, 105mm, 135mm, 180mm and 250mm—and documents parallax correction and close-up operation. Those manual details apply to the C330S; do not assume every C-series revision has identical specifications. The manufacturer’s brochure describes interchangeable lenses and finders and built-in close-up facilities, but its phrase “rugged, professional dependability” is promotional wording, not an independent reliability finding.
Which TLR camera should you buy?
Start with how you plan to photograph, then compare the exact bodies available to you. The central trade-off is straightforward: fixed-lens models keep the system simpler, while Mamiya’s interchangeable-lens design offers more framing choices and close-focus capability in a larger, heavier setup.

What should you check before buying a used TLR?
For a used Mamiya C330, the cited buying guide recommends these checks. They are practical inspection steps, not a guarantee that the camera is fully serviced or defect-free.
- Inspect the bellows: In a darkened room, shine a flashlight inside and look for pinholes.
- Check the focusing screen: Look for damage or deterioration, and make sure the screen clips are present and secure.
- Exercise mirror lock-up: Operate the control to check that it moves and returns as expected.
- Test film advance: Wind through a dummy roll to check film advance and shutter cocking.
- Verify the exact version: Match the camera’s model and configuration to the appropriate manual, especially for film support and features.
- Check metering separately: Confirm that a built-in meter is fitted and functional; otherwise, allow for external metering if you need it.
For other TLR families, use model-specific checks rather than assuming the C330 inspection list covers every design. If you cannot assess the camera’s condition or operation confidently, a specialist camera shop or repair technician can help evaluate it before purchase.
