There was no single best AI art tool in 2024: Midjourney stood out for expressive, polished imagery; DALL·E 3 for conversational prompting; Firefly for Adobe editing workflows; Ideogram for text inside images; Leonardo.Ai for concept art; and Stable Diffusion for control and customization. Canva and Microsoft Designer made quick, designed results accessible to more casual users. This is a historical guide to the image-generation and editing tools available in 2024—not a description of their current models, plans, or terms.

How to choose an AI art tool

“AI art tool” can mean a text-to-image generator, an image editor with generative fill, a design platform that embeds generation, or an ecosystem of models and interfaces you can run locally. The options below focus on consumer and professional image-generation platforms ordinary users could access in 2024. Stable Diffusion is treated as an ecosystem, not a single app.

Judge a tool by the job: image quality and style, how closely it follows a prompt, text rendering, editing and composition controls, ease of use, generation limits, privacy, integrations, and the applicable commercial terms. A generator that makes attractive images quickly may be a poor choice for a repeatable product campaign or a poster that needs exact lettering.

Best AI art tools in 2024 at a glance

Tool Best for 2024 access Control Text in images Editing Commercial-use note Main drawback
Midjourney Artistic, cinematic, and stylized imagery Discord-centered workflow; web experience also emerged Moderate Unreliable for exact wording Variations, upscaling, image prompts Check the applicable plan and terms; visibility and privacy depend on settings and plan Less direct, layered editing and layout control
DALL·E 3 Conversational prompting and accessible ideation ChatGPT and other OpenAI-powered interfaces; API access was separate Lower Useful for some text, but proofread Less granular than dedicated editing workflows OpenAI explains selling DALL·E images in its guidance; terms do not settle every copyright or third-party-rights question Limited fine-grained control and reproducibility
Adobe Firefly Adobe users and image editing Adobe products including Photoshop and Express Moderate Not a dependable substitute for typesetting Generative Fill and Generative Expand in supported workflows Adobe’s commercial-use statements have feature and terms qualifications; not a blanket legal guarantee Less distinctive style for some artistic uses
Ideogram Posters, thumbnails, and typography-led concepts Browser-based service Moderate Stronger than most peers, not infallible Generation and canvas/editing features varied by product version Check the plan’s terms, privacy, and download conditions Less mature editing ecosystem than full design suites
Leonardo.Ai Game assets and concept art Hosted platform with model and preset choices Moderate to high Not its defining strength Canvas and image-to-image workflows Verify platform terms and the license for the selected model Credits and model-specific settings add complexity
Stable Diffusion ecosystem Customization, repeatability, and local workflows Local interfaces, hosted services, model repositories, and APIs High, depending on setup Varies by model and workflow Inpainting, ControlNet-style tools, upscalers, and custom workflows may be available Each model, host, and checkpoint can have different terms Setup, hardware, security, and licensing require attention

Microsoft Designer / Image Creator Low-friction experimentation Browser-based Microsoft service Lower Check lettering carefully Basic design workflow rather than advanced image editing Use is subject to Microsoft account, service, and content terms Limits and product details can change

This is a category guide, not a controlled benchmark or universal image-quality ranking. A 2024 comparison matrix likewise assessed tools across distinct dimensions rather than treating one score as definitive: April 2024 AI image generators comparison matrix.

What each tool did well in 2024

Midjourney: polished imagery and strong visual direction

Midjourney was a compelling choice for fantasy scenes, environments, mood boards, editorial concepts, and images where atmosphere mattered more than exact layout. Its aesthetic defaults often produced cohesive lighting, color, and composition with relatively little setup. Image prompts, variations, upscaling, and aspect-ratio controls helped users explore directions.

Its workflow was historically centered on Discord, while a web experience broadened access during this period; the interface should not be treated as static throughout 2024. It offered less direct control over masks, layers, and precise object placement than an editing suite or a configured Stable Diffusion workflow. Exact typography and branded layouts were also unreliable. Before using it for confidential client work, check the relevant plan’s privacy and visibility provisions. See Midjourney.

DALL·E 3: natural-language prompting

DALL·E 3 made image generation approachable for people who could describe a scene in ordinary language rather than learn a specialized prompt syntax. Its ChatGPT connection supported an iterative, conversational style of ideation, and it was also available through other OpenAI-powered products. It was useful for illustrations, scenes, and concepts with several prompt constraints.

That ease came with trade-offs: users had less granular control over seeds, positioning, and a tightly repeatable production pipeline than in more configurable workflows. ChatGPT access and API access were distinct routes, with separate pricing arrangements. DALL·E 3 in 2024 was not the same product experience as OpenAI’s later native image-generation products. OpenAI’s product announcement is at openai.com/index/dall-e-3; its guidance on selling generated images is at help.openai.com.

Adobe Firefly: generation inside a production workflow

Firefly’s advantage was not only making an image from a prompt. Text-to-image features sat alongside Adobe workflows such as Photoshop’s Generative Fill and Generative Expand, making it useful when the task involved extending a canvas, replacing an area, or fitting an image into a larger composition. Integration with Adobe Express and other Adobe products also suited users already building finished designs in that ecosystem.

Adobe described its training approach and positioned qualifying Firefly outputs for commercial use, but that does not mean every output is guaranteed free of claims, copyright-protected, or indemnified in every circumstance. Adobe’s FAQ distinguishes features without a beta label from beta features, which may carry additional qualifications. The 2024 terms also set conditions around plans and indemnification. Read the Firefly FAQ and the 2024 Generative AI Additional Terms for the relevant feature and plan. Credits and entitlements varied, so a current plans page should not be mistaken for a historical 2024 price list: Adobe Firefly plans.

Ideogram: a useful first stop for image text

When the concept depended on words inside the image—a poster headline, sign, shirt graphic, cover, or thumbnail—Ideogram was a strong option to try. It was particularly useful for typography-led concepts, where many general image generators struggled to form legible lettering. Editing and canvas features expanded the workflow beyond a single generation, though available tools and plan limits depended on the product version.

Better text rendering is not guaranteed accurate typography. Misspellings, invented words, uneven spacing, and poor control over a specific typeface can still make an output unsuitable for publication. For a finished design, generate a background or concept, then add and proofread the final lettering in a design tool. Check the service’s current privacy, download, and commercial terms at Ideogram.

Leonardo.Ai: iterative concept and game-asset work

Leonardo.Ai’s model and preset choices, canvas editing, and image-to-image workflows suited visual exploration: game assets, textures, characters, and related concept art. A creator developing a family of assets could use references and repeatable settings to push toward a shared look, although consistency still required iteration and sometimes manual compositing.

Credits, private-generation options, and rights could depend on the plan, and a platform’s terms do not automatically replace the license of an underlying model. Confirm both before relying on a generation commercially. See Leonardo.Ai.

Stable Diffusion: control through an ecosystem, not one app

Stable Diffusion named a family of models and related workflows, not one consistent consumer product. In 2024 a user might generate through Stability AI’s hosted services, a third-party host, a community interface such as AUTOMATIC1111, a node graph in ComfyUI, or a local installation. Model files and demos could also be found through repositories such as Hugging Face.

HUION Kamvas 13 (Gen 3) Drawing Tablet with Screen, Dual Dial, 13.3", Black

  • Advanced PenTech 4.0 Technology: The 16384 levels of pressure sensitivity and 2g IAF ensure a fluid and natural drawing experience, while the 3 customized pen side buttons improve your workflow.
  • Improved Color Accuracy: With enhanced color accuracy to Avg. ΔE<1.5, 16.7 million display colors, 99% sRGB coverage, and Rec.709 standard color gamuts, HUION Kamvas 13 (Gen 3) digital art tablet delivers stunning visuals.
  • Rigorous Color Calibration: HUION Kamvas 13 (Gen 3) drawing monitor includes a factory calibration report for added assurance of color consistency.

The ecosystem offered the greatest room for customization: custom checkpoints, LoRAs, inpainting, ControlNet-style structure or pose guidance, upscalers, and locally run workflows could support more repeatable art direction than a prompt-only service. The trade-off was technical overhead. Installation, hardware, extensions, and troubleshooting varied; downloading models or extensions from community sources also called for security care. Software licensing, model licenses, and hosted-service terms are separate questions, so inspect the exact model repository and service before commercial use.

Stability AI’s developer pricing page states that one credit equals US$0.01 and lists different credit costs for its image services. That is a developer-platform pricing signal, not a universal price for Stable Diffusion in 2024 or for local generation.

Canva Magic Media: image generation within a design task

Canva made sense when the goal was to produce a social post, presentation, flyer, or thumbnail—not merely to generate a standalone image. Magic Media brought image creation into a larger workflow with templates, typography, resizing, brand features, and publishing. That convenience could matter more to a non-designer than advanced prompt or model controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For greater control over image generation, custom models, or detailed compositing, a specialist tool was a better fit. Canva’s content license also does not settle the legal status of generated material or third-party assets used in the same design. See Canva’s AI image generator.

Microsoft Designer / Image Creator: quick experimentation

Microsoft Designer and Image Creator offered a browser-based entry point for casual experiments and quick visual concepts, with integration into Microsoft services. A free entry point should not be equated with a predictable professional workflow: account requirements, boosts or quotas, and service details could change. It offered fewer controls than a customizable local workflow. Check Microsoft’s current account, usage, and content terms at Microsoft Designer.

Choose by the work you need to do

If you need… Start with… Why
Expressive fantasy, cinematic scenes, or mood-board imagery Midjourney Strong aesthetic defaults and stylistic cohesion
To describe a concept conversationally DALL·E 3 Accessible natural-language prompting through ChatGPT and other interfaces
Generative edits in a Photoshop workflow Adobe Firefly Generation and fill/expand features within Adobe tools
Readable words as part of an image concept Ideogram Particularly useful for typography-led generations; final text still needs checking
Game assets and iterative concept exploration Leonardo.Ai Presets, model choices, canvas, and image-to-image workflows
Custom models, structural control, or local processing Stable Diffusion ecosystem Flexible tools, with additional technical and licensing responsibility
Social graphics or presentations built from a template Canva Magic Media Generation is part of an end-to-end design workflow
Low-friction browser experimentation Microsoft Designer / Image Creator Easy access for quick concepts, subject to changing limits

How the major trade-offs compare

Artistic finish versus control

Midjourney was a natural starting point when the priority was a striking image with a cohesive style. Stable Diffusion workflows made more sense when the brief demanded custom models, structural guidance, or local processing and the user could manage setup. DALL·E 3 emphasized conversational ease, while Firefly emphasized edits and integration into an existing production workflow. These are different strengths, not a universal quality ladder.

Typography versus reliable production text

Ideogram was the stronger starting point when lettering was central. Yet no generated text should be treated as proofread copy or a finished logo by default. Keep exact wording short for exploration, then typeset and inspect the final graphic yourself—especially for names, product claims, legal copy, and brand marks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hosted convenience versus local privacy and responsibility

A hosted service avoids managing hardware and model files, but its galleries, prompt and upload retention, and business-data controls depend on that provider and plan. Local generation can reduce the need to send material to a generation service, but it does not automatically resolve model-license, data-security, or device-access questions. Do not upload client-confidential designs, unreleased products, identifiable faces, or personal data until you have checked the applicable data terms and permissions.

Generation versus finished artwork

A generated image is not automatically print-ready. Check its native dimensions, crop, aspect ratio, artifacts, and color before production. Upscaling can add pixels, but does not guarantee fine detail or correct print color; DPI alone does not improve the underlying image. If the delivery requires transparent PNGs, layered files, vectors, or CMYK output, confirm that the tool and the rest of your workflow support those formats.

Getting better results—and fixing common failures

The image looks good but misses the brief

Separate a prompt into subject, action, setting, camera or viewpoint, lighting, composition, and aspect ratio. Remove style instructions that conflict with each other, and simplify a crowded scene before adding small details. Where supported, use a reference image. Treat a first result as a concept to edit or composite, not a guaranteed finished asset.

Faces, hands, or objects are distorted

Reduce the number of interacting subjects and regenerate, then crop and inpaint a local defect if the workflow permits. Try a model or process better suited to the desired photorealistic result. Inspect important details at full size rather than trusting a small preview.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Text is misspelled or malformed

Try less text and a single short phrase, or generate the image without lettering. Add the exact final copy separately in Photoshop, Illustrator, Canva, or another design tool, then proofread spacing and spelling.

A series does not look consistent

Use image references, fixed settings, or repeated seeds where available; develop a visual style sheet and reuse it. Tools that support character references, custom models, or LoRAs may help, but expect manual correction and compositing rather than assuming every frame will match.

Credits run out unexpectedly

Check whether a prompt creates multiple images, whether resolution or upscaling costs extra, and whether premium models or other features consume more credits. Review failed-generation rules, reset dates, and rollover provisions in the specific plan rather than assuming all services count usage the same way.

Commercial use, copyright, and privacy

Before using generated art in a business project, separate the platform’s contractual permission from copyright protection, third-party rights, and any indemnification promise. A service may permit commercial use under its terms without guaranteeing that an output is copyrightable or free from another party’s claim. Laws vary by jurisdiction, and the terms depend on the product, feature, plan, and date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check the output and feature terms. A beta feature, restricted plan, or underlying model may have different conditions. Adobe’s commercial-use statements, for example, distinguish features without a beta label from beta features and are subject to terms.
  • Clear your inputs. Make sure you have permission to upload reference art, photographs, logos, and other material. Generated output does not remove rights attached to the input.
  • Review likeness and brand risks. A recognizable person, trademark, logo, or copyrighted character can raise separate issues. Avoid deceptive impersonation and non-consensual imagery.
  • Confirm privacy separately. Ask whether prompts, uploads, and results are public, retained, or used to improve the service, and whether an enterprise plan changes those practices.
  • Keep production records. For important commercial work, retain prompts, generation date, tool and model version, plan, input permissions, and records of human editing and approval.

Do not rely on blanket claims that AI images are copyright-free or automatically “commercially safe.” Consult the actual terms for the tool, plan, and feature you used, and seek legal advice for material business risk.

Which tool should you start with?

Choose the workflow, not a leaderboard position. Start with Midjourney for distinctive art direction, DALL·E 3 for conversational ideation, Firefly for Adobe-based editing, Ideogram for text-led concepts, Leonardo.Ai for iterative game and concept art, Stable Diffusion for technical control, Canva for fast designed content, or Microsoft Designer for casual experimentation. Then test the chosen tool against the real constraints of your brief: required text, repeatability, privacy, output format, and the rights you need.
