In April 2025, a visitor sat on Nicola Bolla’s crystal-covered “Van Gogh” chair sculpture at Palazzo Maffei in Verona, Italy. It collapsed, and the pair left without telling museum staff. The museum reported the incident to police; the sculpture was later restored and returned to display.
What happened to the “Van Gogh” chair?
Security footage showed a man and a woman posing beside the sculpture. The man sat on it, lost his balance and the work collapsed, leaving its legs broken and seat crushed. The pair then left without speaking to staff, according to Euronews’ June 2025 report.
The incident occurred in April and became public in June 2025. Palazzo Maffei said it reported the damage to police. Visitors had not been identified in reporting at that time; the available accounts do not establish whether they were later identified, charged, or asked to pay compensation.

It is also distinct from Van Gogh’s 1888 painting Van Gogh’s Chair. The National Gallery’s collection entry describes that separate painting. The shared chair motif should not be mistaken for shared authorship or for the same artwork.
Was the sculpture repaired?
Yes. Palazzo Maffei said it was uncertain for several days whether the sculpture could be restored, but that restorers helped recover it. Reporting in June said it had returned to display. No reliable restoration-cost figure was reported.

What did the museum say?
Palazzo Maffei director Vanessa Carlon described the damage as an accident but criticized the visitors for leaving without notifying staff: “This is a nightmare for any museum. Of course it was an accident, but these two people left without speaking to us – that isn’t an accident,” Euronews reported.

In a separate statement, the museum said it shared the episode “not only out of duty of record, but to start a real campaign to raise awareness of the value of art and the respect it is due.” It also thanked law enforcement, its security department and restorers. Those are the museum’s stated reasons and account of its response.

Reports described the sculpture as delicate and said visitors were warned not to touch it. CBS reported that it stood on a pedestal and quoted Palazzo Maffei art historian Carlotta Menegazzo describing its hollow frame. Those details help explain why a chair-shaped artwork could be vulnerable to being treated as furniture, but they do not establish that the display caused the damage.
Museums Association commentary raised a related question: whether a chair-like work’s setting makes its fragility and status as art clear enough to visitors. That is a discussion about interpretation and display practice, not evidence that the museum caused this incident. The footage and museum account describe the visitor’s action and the pair’s departure; the available reporting does not settle broader responsibility beyond those facts.
