Tracking Down the Right Shade of Paint

The right paint shade is the one that works with your room’s fixed finishes and still looks right in its real daylight, evening light, and intended sheen. Here’s how to shortlist, test, and match paint.

The most reliable way to choose a paint shade is to test real paint in the room where it will go, then look at it under the room’s daylight and usual artificial lighting. A color chip or phone preview can narrow the options, but it cannot show exactly how a wall’s light, surrounding finishes, and paint sheen will affect the result.

Start with the room, not the paint chip

Identify the finishes that are staying

Before comparing paint, note the colors and undertones in flooring, cabinets, tile, brick, rugs, artwork, and upholstery. These fixed or difficult-to-change surfaces are part of the color scheme, so a paint shade should work alongside them rather than in isolation. Sherwin-Williams recommends drawing inspiration from furnishings and checking a new color against permanent finishes: How to Choose Paint Colors.

Room size can help guide the shortlist: lighter colors can make a small room feel more open, while darker colors can make a large room feel more intimate. Treat this as a design effect to consider, not a guarantee about how a particular shade will feel.

Map the room’s light

Daylight changes as the sun moves, and artificial bulbs can shift a paint color’s appearance. Sherwin-Williams notes that incandescent light’s warm tones influence color differently from natural daylight. Look at candidates in the morning, afternoon, and evening, as well as under the lights you normally use at night. Its color guidance also recommends viewing a wall swatch at different times of day: Sherwin-Williams color guidance.

Narrow the choices by undertone and intensity

Choose a small group of related shades rather than trying to decide from a tiny printed chip or a large assortment of unrelated colors. Compare each candidate on the qualities that matter in your room:

  • Undertone: Does it read warm, cool, or relatively neutral beside the room’s fixed finishes?
  • Lightness: Does it look too pale or too dark in the room, rather than only on a fan deck?
  • Intensity: Is the color subdued or more vivid than you want?
  • Lighting: Does it remain appealing in the daylight and artificial light the room actually receives?
  • Finish: Does the intended sheen suit the room and the look you want?

For connected rooms, using shades from a common color chip or palette can help create visual flow, according to Sherwin-Williams: color-palette guidance.

Test paint on the wall before committing

Buy a physical paint sample or tester and apply it in the room. Behr calls a wall swatch the best way to assess whether a color suits a room because it shows the paint in the exact space and lighting conditions: Behr: How To Choose a Paint Color for Your Home Interior. Use a generous swatch, or apply several samples with space between them so the existing wall color is less likely to dominate your comparison.

Check samples in more than one location if the room has different light across its walls. Dulux suggests painting a sheet about A4 size and moving it between walls, then viewing it under natural and artificial light at different times. Home Depot also recommends large sample squares in both natural and indoor light: Dulux colour advice and Home Depot paint-color guidance.

Judge the dry paint and the intended sheen

Do not make the decision from wet paint. Asian Paints advises waiting 4–6 hours for a sample to dry before judging its shade; that recommendation is from its 2014 guidance, and drying time can vary with the paint and conditions: Asian Paints: choosing a paint colour.

Sheen also affects appearance. Matt, satin, semi-gloss, and gloss finishes can make the same nominal hue look different. Whenever possible, test the actual finish you plan to buy rather than judging a flat sample and assuming it will look identical once applied in another sheen.

Matching paint that is already on the wall

For an existing wall, an in-store scan of a physical paint sample is more useful than choosing a color from a photograph. Sherwin-Williams says its stores can scan a sample about the size of a quarter. Its technical guide describes a process involving spectrophotometer measurement, formula comparison and tinting, followed by comparison with a cured drawdown: Sherwin-Williams color matching and Sherwin-Williams technical guide.

Take a clean sample from an inconspicuous area and ask the retailer what sample condition and size it can scan. A match should be understood as the closest available formulation, not a promise that the new paint will be indistinguishable from an older, faded, dirty, or differently finished surface.

Use digital previews as a shortlist, not a final test

A paint visualizer can help you explore color families and eliminate obvious mismatches, but a screen image is not a substitute for physical paint in the room. Sherwin-Williams explains that phone cameras vary and that a camera cannot fully account for sunlight and shadows: Sherwin-Williams color tools and guidance.

Pantone also cautions that paint made to match a Pantone color may not be exact because paint formulations, substrates, and finishes vary. Pantone says it does not manufacture or sell paint: Pantone Support: How do I get paint in a Pantone color?. Use digital tools and named color references to narrow your options, then confirm with a physical sample.
