To turn a picture into a LEGO mosaic with Legoaizer, use APP Helmond’s mosaic-design software—now called Brickaizer—to convert an image into a stud-by-stud plan. Its documented picture-mosaic mode can match the image with photographs of real bricks, while size, crop, color, and output settings help shape the design. Brickaizer is software for planning a build; it is not the same product as LEGO Mosaic Maker 40179, a separate physical kit.
What happened to Legoaizer?
Legoaizer is the former name of APP Helmond’s brick-mosaic software. The company says it renamed the product Brickaizer after legal threats over the previous name’s perceived association with LEGO. In its rename notice, APP Helmond said, “The good news is: the application hasn’t changed a bit!” That was the vendor’s statement at the time of the rename, not a guarantee about compatibility with every current release. APP Helmond’s product page lists Brickaizer version 8.0.48, dated 5 April 2026. APP Helmond’s rename notice and current Brickaizer product page provide the naming and version details.
How picture-to-mosaic conversion works
A mosaic is a pixelated interpretation of a two-dimensional image, recreated with LEGO bricks. The software reduces visual detail to a grid: each position in that grid represents a piece and a color choice. A smaller grid is easier to build, but loses fine detail; a larger grid can preserve more of the source image, while requiring more pieces and work.
The historical Legoaizer tutorial describes two approaches: generate pieces from a brick-color table, or match the image using photographs of real bricks and plates. Photograph-based matching can produce a preview that reflects the photographed parts’ appearance and pattern. APP Helmond’s tutorial says the included RealBrickPictures library contains 177 brick images, covering 11 basic shapes and 17 commonly used colors; the tutorial does not state a publication year for those counts. Because the software analyzes candidate photographs against requested colors, this mode takes longer, according to the tutorial. Its control names describe the older Legoaizer interface, so check the current Brickaizer release for equivalent options. APP Helmond’s picture-mosaic tutorial documents the workflow.

Set the mosaic size and image framing
APP Helmond’s help describes controls for horizontal and vertical stud dimensions, automatic vertical sizing to preserve the source image’s aspect ratio, and automatic cropping. Together, these determine whether the design keeps the whole photograph, trims it to fit, or stretches it. For a portrait or other image where proportions matter, preserve the aspect ratio; if the target grid has a different shape, decide deliberately whether cropping is acceptable rather than distorting the subject. The available settings are documented on APP Helmond’s functions page.
Choose a color-matching method
Use generated brick colors
A color-table approach maps image areas to available brick colors without matching them to photographs of specific pieces. This is the more direct route when the priority is a color-based design rather than a photo-realistic preview.

Use pictures of real pieces
For the picture-based approach, the historical tutorial instructs users to enable the picture-based layout and both photo-mosaic options so the image engine uses the brick-picture library. The actual labels may differ in current Brickaizer. Matching photographed pieces can make the preview better reflect the parts’ appearance, but takes longer because the software evaluates candidate images.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPrepare a custom picture library
If the included pictures do not represent the pieces you plan to use, the tutorial describes making a library from your own photographs. It recommends consistent cropping at 60 pixels per stud: for example, 60×60 pixels for a 1×1 piece and 120×60 for a 2×1 piece. Save the images as BMP files. Use a filename with an underscore separating the color name from any note that should be discarded; the software infers piece dimensions from image dimensions. These are the historical tutorial’s instructions, so confirm they still match the current version before preparing a large library. See the tutorial’s picture-library guidance.

Review transparency, filters, and the build plan
APP Helmond’s functions documentation also describes color matching, transparency, and filters. These settings can affect how the source image is interpreted and how the resulting grid looks; inspect the preview before committing to a parts list. The program can save the mosaic as PNG, JPG, or BMP. It can also produce spreadsheet output with piece quantities, costs, positions, and orientations, provided an Excel-compatible reader is available. Those are documented capabilities; the cited materials do not establish how every option behaves in each current release. APP Helmond’s function descriptions list the controls and outputs.
Choose the workflow that fits your build
| Workflow | What it is | Useful when | Considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brickaizer (formerly Legoaizer) | Standalone mosaic-design software from APP Helmond. | You want to control grid size, framing, matching, or output, including a documented spreadsheet build plan. | Windows-oriented; picture matching and a custom photo library add setup or processing time. Check current licensing and compatibility with the vendor. |
| LEGO Mosaic Maker 40179 | A separate physical LEGO product with an image-upload and digital-grid workflow, plus building pieces. | You want a kit-based route to an image-derived portrait rather than standalone design software. | The official page specifies a 48×48 baseplate and 4,500 1×1 plates across five colors, 900 per color. Another passage on the same page says 4,702 total pieces; that is a different count and should not be treated as the number of 1×1 plates. |
| BrickLink Studio | Separate software whose help describes importing an image and using a Mosaic dialog. | You want to explore a digital mosaic workflow in another building-design tool. | It is not a Brickaizer feature. The cited help establishes the import and mosaic workflow, not a comparison of output or parts-list capabilities. |
LEGO’s Mosaic Maker 40179 page describes uploading an image, obtaining a digital building grid, then saving and building it. BrickLink Studio’s mosaic help describes its separate image-import workflow.

Check Brickaizer’s current requirements before installing
APP Helmond describes Brickaizer as standalone and Windows-oriented, with Windows 7 and later supported on its product page. The company advises macOS users to check that their Windows-under-macOS setup works before purchasing. Its product and interface pages describe a free grace period followed by restrictions on some professional features; the interface help says a license is required for output after a 15-day freeware period. These terms can change, so consult APP Helmond’s current product page and interface and licensing help for the current release before relying on platform or licensing details.

For a custom build, 1×1 plates or tiles and a compatible baseplate are a practical starting point. Use the generated design’s dimensions, palette, quantities, and orientations to check that the parts you source actually match the plan; a listing for a particular piece or color does not establish compatibility with every mosaic. LEGO Mosaic Maker 40179 is different: its official product page describes a 48×48 baseplate and 4,500 1×1 plates in five colors, with 900 plates of each color. The same page separately mentions 4,702 total pieces, so do not confuse the kit’s specified plate count with that broader total. Availability and stock are not established here; check LEGO’s product page or a current retailer listing. LEGO’s product page gives the kit specifications; BrickLink Studio’s help describes the general idea of rebuilding a pixelated image with LEGO bricks.
