Translucent glazing can admit useful daylight while preventing a direct, clear view. Viridian’s laminated VLam Translucent uses a frosted PVB interlayer, while its DécorSatin and DécorPattern ranges create privacy through etched or textured surfaces. The right choice depends on the light level, degree of obscuration, safety construction, moisture exposure and the way the glass will be fabricated and installed.
Privacy and daylight are often treated as opposing design goals. Clear glass gives the most open view and the highest visual connection, but it can expose bathrooms, bedrooms, street-facing rooms and internal work areas. Solid blinds and opaque wall finishes solve the view problem by blocking light as well. Translucent glass takes a different approach: it transmits light after scattering it, so a room can remain bright without preserving a sharp view through the pane.

What translucent glass does—and what it does not do
Translucent glass is not the same as clear glass, and “diffused” does not mean that every view is completely hidden. A translucent interlayer, etched surface or textured pattern breaks up the image seen through the glass. Depending on the product, lighting direction, distance and angle, an observer may still see movement, silhouettes, colours or broad shapes.
Privacy therefore has to be specified for the actual application. A bathroom window looking toward a neighbouring house may need stronger obscuration than an internal office partition. A panel beside a front door may need to hide facial detail while still admitting enough light for safe entry. Night-time conditions can also change the result: if a room is brightly lit and the exterior is dark, silhouettes may be more apparent than they are during the day.

- Light transmission describes how much visible light passes through a particular glass build-up.
- Diffusion describes how strongly the transmitted light is scattered.
- Obscuration describes how difficult it is to identify objects or people through the glass.
- Appearance covers the visible colour, satin finish, pattern and surface texture.
These properties interact, but they are not interchangeable. A high-transmission product can still provide useful privacy if its interlayer scatters the image; a heavily patterned product may obscure a view while producing a more distinctive decorative appearance.
What Viridian’s demand claim actually says
In a 10 March 2015 article, Viridian described translucent glass as a way to combine privacy with natural light and stated: “There is a rising consumer demand for translucent glass as it offers both privacy and natural light economically.” That is a manufacturer’s market framing from 2015, not a current independent survey of the whole glazing market.

The same article reported that all respondents in a Lonergan Research study said they would pay extra to improve natural light in their homes. It also quoted a figure that 25% of people aged 50 and over were willing to spend more than $5,000 on improvements. Viridian attributed that result to Lonergan Research, June 2014, Display Villages, page 7. Because the original study is not independently verified here, the figure should be read as Viridian’s report of that study rather than as a current, independently confirmed statistic.
The practical design point remains clear even without treating the 2015 wording as a present-day demand measurement: homeowners and designers may want brighter interiors without exposing private rooms. Translucent glazing is one architectural response to that tension.
How VLam Translucent is constructed
Viridian describes VLam Translucent as two sheets of glass bonded around a translucent, frosted PVB interlayer. The interlayer scatters light and disrupts a direct image while the laminated construction holds the glass together if it breaks. Viridian lists the product for windows, doors, partitions, balustrades, facades, overhead glazing, furniture and fully framed shower screens.
The product page says VLam can be specified as a laminated unit, a toughened laminated unit or an insulated glazed unit. Those are different constructions, not interchangeable labels. The final safety, thermal and structural performance depends on the glass thicknesses, heat treatment, interlayer, framing and complete glazing system selected by the specifier.

VLam Translucent light-transmission figures
Viridian lists the following visible-light-transmission values for named VLam Translucent configurations. The percentages are configuration-specific; the 68% figure for clear 6.38 mm glass must not be applied to every thickness, colour or build-up.

Viridian notes that its performance data uses LBL Window 7 software and NFRC 100–2010 conditions. These are test or calculation conditions attached to the listed configurations, not a guarantee that every installed window will deliver the same perceived brightness. Frame width, orientation, glass area, external shading, dirt and interior finishes all affect the light that reaches a room.
Choosing between laminated, etched and textured options
VLam Translucent: a laminated privacy layer
VLam Translucent is the option to consider when the specification calls for a translucent PVB within a laminated glass construction. It can be used in a broad range of architectural locations and can be ordered in laminated, toughened laminated or insulated glazed forms. The appearance is a frosted translucent field rather than a raised decorative pattern.
When toughened, Viridian states that VLam Translucent is Grade A safety glass. The safety statement applies to the specified toughened construction; it should not be treated as a blanket classification for every thickness or installation. A separate Viridian page uses broader Grade A certification wording, so the processor or supplier should confirm the exact certification and local compliance requirements for the build-up being ordered.

DécorSatin is described as frosted etched glass with a translucent satin finish. Etching changes the surface appearance and gives a smooth, muted decorative effect. It may suit doors, screens, partitions or feature areas where a uniform satin look is preferred.
Etched glass can require careful handling and cleaning because the treated surface is part of the visible finish. The privacy result still depends on the precise product, panel size, lighting and viewing distance; “satin” alone does not specify a universal privacy level.

DécorPattern: textured decorative glass
DécorPattern is a range rather than one single appearance. Viridian describes it as textured decorative glass with different styles and levels of light diffusion, privacy and obscuration. The texture can become a design feature in its own right, making it useful where the glazing must contribute pattern as well as screening.
The available product descriptions do not establish a single privacy ranking that applies across every DécorPattern design. Compare the individual pattern’s technical data and view a sample at the intended distance before choosing it for a bathroom, entrance or boundary-facing opening.
Comparison criteria for a real project
A useful comparison is more than a light-transmission percentage. Ask the supplier to document each of these points for the exact panel and frame:
- Visible light transmission: use the value for the specified thickness, colour and glazing build-up.
- Privacy and obscuration: establish whether the requirement is to hide facial detail, body outline, text, equipment or only a clear view.
- Appearance: compare clear-frosted, satin-etched and textured samples in both daylight and artificial light.
- Application: confirm suitability for windows, doors, partitions, balustrades, facades, overhead glazing, furniture or a fully framed shower screen.
- Safety construction: identify whether the design requires laminated, toughened laminated or insulated glazing and check the applicable local rules.
- Moisture exposure: pay particular attention to bathrooms, shower screens, wet rooms and exterior edges.
- Fabrication and installation: verify maximum dimensions, edge treatment, holes, cut-outs, tolerances, framing and the processor’s handling instructions.
Where translucent glazing works well
Bathrooms and shower screens
Bathrooms are the clearest example of the privacy-and-daylight trade-off. A translucent window can bring in daylight while reducing direct views from outside. Viridian specifically lists fully framed shower screens among VLam Translucent applications. In a wet area, the frame, seals and drainage design matter as much as the glass, because persistent moisture at a laminated edge can damage the interlayer bond.
Street-facing bedrooms and living spaces
Translucent glazing can soften views from a footpath or neighbouring property while maintaining daytime brightness. For a bedroom, consider whether the requirement is privacy after dark as well as during the day. Curtains, blinds or layered screening may still be needed where interior lighting makes silhouettes visible.
Doors, sidelights and internal partitions
In a door or sidelight, translucent glass can provide borrowed light and reduce the ability to see directly into an entry hall, office or consultation room. A sample should be checked at eye level, because a pattern that hides detail at a distance may reveal movement when someone stands close to it.

Balustrades, facades and overhead glazing
Viridian lists balustrades, facades and overhead glazing as applications for VLam Translucent. These locations introduce structural, impact, weathering and maintenance requirements that cannot be solved by selecting a surface appearance alone. The engineer, glazier and building designer must specify the complete system, including support, wind or imposed loads, drainage and access for cleaning.

Viridian warns that a glazing system must either drain water away or be fully watertight to protect laminated edges from long-term moisture exposure. This is especially important where water can collect in a frame, at a sill, around a shower screen or behind an exterior bead.
The manufacturer recommends neutral-cure silicone. It warns that some sealants, including linseed oil or putty, can contribute to edge delamination. “Silicone” is not sufficient as a specification by itself: the installer should use a compatible neutral-cure product and follow the glass processor’s preparation, curing and compatibility instructions.
- Provide a drainage path where the system is designed to drain.
- Do not trap water against laminated edges or leave unsealed channels that can repeatedly wet the interlayer.
- Confirm sealant compatibility before installation, especially when replacing an older pane in an existing frame.
- Inspect wet-area seals and drainage during maintenance rather than waiting for visible clouding or edge damage.
Procurement and specification steps
- Define the privacy outcome. Write down what must be hidden and from which viewpoints, including daytime and night-time conditions.
- Select the visual family. Decide whether the project needs a frosted laminated interlayer, an etched satin surface or a particular textured pattern.
- Choose the construction. Have the glazier or engineer confirm laminated, toughened laminated or insulated glazing, along with thickness and safety requirements.
- Check performance data. Use the visible-light-transmission value for the exact configuration, not a headline value from another thickness or colour.
- Review a physical sample. Hold it at the intended viewing distance and check it from both sides in daylight and with interior lights on.
- Resolve edge and water details. Confirm drainage or full watertightness, neutral-cure silicone compatibility, edge cover and frame geometry.
- Confirm fabrication limits. Ask about stock sizes, maximum dimensions, cut-outs, holes, edgework, lead times and whether further processing is required.
- Obtain the current technical documentation. Product pages and availability can change, so verify the latest data with Viridian or a qualified regional supplier before ordering.
Stock, processing and installation cautions
Viridian’s listed stock sizes are not an assurance that a particular sheet is immediately available. A listed size may still require cutting, edge processing, drilling, toughening, lamination or assembly into an insulating unit. Those operations affect lead time, cost, tolerances and the final performance specification.
Architectural laminated glass should therefore be bought through a supplier or glazier able to specify, process and install it. Give that supplier the opening dimensions, frame type, exposure, location, required privacy, safety obligations and any acoustic or thermal targets. Do not assume that a standard hardware-store pane can substitute for a specified laminated unit in a door, balustrade, shower screen or overhead application.
Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming 68% applies to every VLam product
The 68% value belongs to clear 6.38 mm VLam Translucent as listed by Viridian. Other clear thicknesses, SuperClear variants and grey glass have different listed values. Use the row for the actual configuration.

Treating diffusion as total blackout
Diffusion interrupts a clear image; it does not guarantee that silhouettes, movement or bright colours disappear. Test the product under the lighting conditions that matter to the room.
Ranking DécorSatin and DécorPattern without a product-level test
DécorSatin is a frosted etched finish, while DécorPattern includes multiple textures and obscuration levels. There is no single ranking that can be applied to the entire DécorPattern range. Compare the selected pattern, not just the collection name.

Ignoring the edge environment
A visually appropriate pane can still fail prematurely if water remains at the laminated edge or an incompatible sealant is used. Drainage, watertightness and neutral-cure sealant selection belong in the installation specification.
Choosing from a catalogue image alone
Photography rarely shows how a pattern behaves at the actual viewing distance or with lights on behind it. A physical sample and a written performance schedule reduce the risk of an expensive re-order.
Bottom line for designers and homeowners
Translucent glass is a practical way to fill a room with daylight while reducing direct views, but privacy is a product-and-application result rather than a single label. VLam Translucent provides a laminated frosted PVB option with listed light-transmission values from 32% for the specified grey 6.76 mm variant to 70% for the listed SuperClear 10.38 mm and 12.38 mm variants. DécorSatin offers an etched satin appearance, and DécorPattern provides multiple textured designs with varying diffusion and obscuration.
Specify the exact construction, test the appearance in real lighting, protect laminated edges from moisture, use compatible neutral-cure silicone and have a qualified supplier confirm current stock, processing, safety and installation requirements before fabrication.
