Leaves, twigs, pinecones, pebbles, and driftwood can inspire striking art—but whether you may take them home depends on where you find them. Check the rules for the specific park, beach, or public land first. If collecting is not allowed, or you are unsure, make art from observation: photograph, sketch, or arrange objects temporarily where they lie.
Check the rules before collecting anything
There is no single collection rule for every outdoor space. Follow the current guidance of the land manager for the exact place you visit, and ask a ranger if the rules are unclear. When in doubt, leave the object where it is and make a photograph, sketch, or temporary arrangement instead.
Rules can be strict. Indiana Dunes National Park says visitors may not remove living or dead plant material there and restricts collecting rocks, fossils, sand, and occupied shells, with narrow exceptions for specific items and locations. Those are rules for that park, not a universal policy; check the site you plan to visit.

Before using any permitted find, inspect it and consider whether removing it could affect the ecosystem. Avoid unknown plants, sharp or contaminated objects, wildlife parts, occupied shells, and living plants. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife specifically flags hazards such as poison oak, broken glass, and stinging nettles. For younger participants, have an adult check materials before anyone handles them.

Choose a project that fits the place and the materials
First decide whether your art can stay outdoors or needs to become a fixed object. If you cannot collect materials at the site, choose a project that uses photographs, sketches, or objects arranged in place. Glue and string are optional: they are useful for some fixed crafts, but not for temporary art.

Make a found-art composition
Look for contrast rather than quantity: a broad leaf beside a slender twig, a pale pebble against a dark surface, or a pinecone next to a smooth seedpod. Lay a few permitted, fallen objects together on the ground or another suitable surface. Shift their spacing and direction until the shapes feel balanced, then photograph the result if you want to keep it.

For a fixed version at home, use only materials you were allowed to collect. Arrange them on a base before attaching anything; glue is an option, not a requirement for the outdoor version. Do not pick flowers or break living plants to fill gaps.
Build a temporary nature mandala
Start with a center point and arrange permitted objects outward in a circle. Repeat a shape or color around the ring—small stones, leaf forms, or short twigs can create a simple rhythm. Make the design collaboratively if you are working with a group, and leave it in place rather than carrying the materials away when collection is inappropriate.

Spell a name or model a familiar shape
Use the outlines of permitted objects to make letters, an animal, a person, or a landmark. A long twig can suggest a limb or building edge; seeds and pebbles can mark smaller details. Keep the model loose and temporary where removing materials is not allowed. If you are making a lasting version at home, attach only permitted finds to a base.
Make a collection without taking objects
Photograph or sketch details that catch your eye: a leaf’s branching veins, the curve of driftwood, or the pattern of seeds on the ground. Add a short note to a nature journal describing the object’s shape, color, texture, and where you saw it. This turns looking closely into the project, without removing anything from the site.

Try a collage or mobile with permitted finds
At home, arrange permitted materials into a small collage or string selected objects into a mobile. Test the composition before fixing it: vary the size, shape, and spacing so each piece remains visible. Glue and string or wool are possible additions for fixed wild art, but temporary arrangements need neither.
If you plan to travel with a natural-material craft, check the current rules for both your destination and return country. USDA APHIS warns that natural-material handicrafts can carry invasive insects or plant diseases; applicable items must be declared and may be subject to inspection and entry requirements. Do not assume that an item you found or bought can cross a border.
