TurtleStitch turns a program made from visual blocks into an embroidery design: you direct an on-screen turtle, inspect the path it draws, export a stitch file, and send that file to compatible embroidery equipment. It is a practical bridge from code to fabric, not a guarantee that every machine can read the file or that every design will stitch cleanly.
What is TurtleStitch?
TurtleStitch is a free, open-source web platform for creating, sharing, and remixing embroidery patterns through code. It is built on Snap!, a browser-based, block-oriented programming environment. Instead of typing a conventional program, you connect visual commands that tell a turtle where to move and when to draw.

The stage shows the path your commands create; that path can become a machine embroidery file or an SVG for vector work.

How a design goes from code to fabric
1. Build and run a block script
Connect movement and stitch instructions in the block editor, then run the script. The turtle follows the commands on screen, letting you see the pattern take shape before exporting. TurtleStitch’s beginner cards introduce the basic workflow.
2. Inspect the path at the intended size
Read the turtle’s line as the intended thread path. The FAQ says the design grid represents 50 pixels per centimeter and recommends designing at the intended final size. Compare the displayed dimensions with the embroidery area of the frame you plan to use, and check for crowded intersections or repeated lines.

3. Set how the stitches behave
TurtleStitch’s release notes document running stitch, triple-run (bean) stitch, cross stitch, zigzag, z-stitch, satin, and tatami fill. A stitch type applies to subsequent movement commands until you change or reset it. Tatami fills an area with neighboring dense lines; satin makes a dense zigzag.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a starting point, TurtleStitch’s FAQ recommends 8–12 steps per stitch, with 10 steps approximately 2 mm. Fewer steps produce a denser pattern and more steps a looser one. This is project guidance, not a guarantee for every combination of fabric, thread, and machine; inspect the design and test it on suitable material when possible.

4. Export for the intended output
Choose the output for the job. The project’s repository lists Melco/EXP and Tajima/DST embroidery exports. TurtleStitch also supports SVG; its release notes describe SVG and PNG output, including SVG use for vector workflows such as laser cutting, engraving, print, or screen work.
| Output | Best suited to | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| .EXP or .DST | Machine embroidery | Whether the specific machine reads the format, and whether the design fits its frame |
| SVG | Vector workflows such as laser cutting or print | Whether the receiving application or equipment supports the file and intended workflow |
5. Transfer and stitch
Hoop the material, transfer the file using the machine’s supported method, and run the design. TurtleStitch creates a design file; it does not directly control a particular embroidery machine. The machine’s documentation determines how to load the file and which materials and frame sizes it supports.

What to check before stitching
File compatibility
The FAQ says the machine must read .EXP or .DST, and warns that not all machines support those formats. Some equipment may require conversion software; TurtleStitch mentions Ink/Stitch as one possible open-source route. Confirm the machine’s exact requirements before designing around an export format.
Frame size and scaling
Embroidery areas differ by machine, so check the design’s dimensions against the frame you intend to use. The FAQ reports that most machines allow only plus or minus 10% scaling and warns that scaling a finished pattern can affect stitch density. Treat that figure as TurtleStitch’s guidance, not a universal limit: frame and software capabilities vary.

Dense overlaps and fabric stress
Several thread layers concentrated in one spot can stress the material and affect stitch quality. Use TurtleStitch’s Density Warning and X-Ray View to spot overlaps. The beginner guide also cautions that too many stitches in the same place can tear fabric. A clean-looking preview is a reason to inspect the path, not proof that the fabric will tolerate every layer.
Jump stitches between lines
A jump stitch is the loose thread left when the turtle travels between lines without stitching. It lets a design use separate sections instead of one continuous stitched path. Depending on the result you want, you can trim those threads or leave them as part of the design.
What if you do not own an embroidery machine?
TurtleStitch’s FAQ suggests looking for a local Fab Lab or makerspace, or asking an embroidery service to stitch the file. Availability depends on your area, and a provider will still need equipment compatible with the file and design. The FAQ also mentions contacting TurtleStitch about possible embroidery opportunities near Vienna; this is not a general service guarantee.

The approach makes movement and stitch choices visible: a sequence of commands becomes a path that can be inspected and adjusted before it is stitched. A SIGGRAPH ’19 Studio description presents an embroidery machine as a robot following a stored algorithm to move a needle over fabric, and describes TurtleStitch as a setting for textile artists to build tools and explore programming concepts. Its account includes formal classroom and informal studio use in the United States and European Union, with participants ranging from children as young as eight to adults described as tech-averse. Those are qualitative workshop observations, not measured proof of learning outcomes.
For painters and other visual artists, the useful distinction is between the preview and the physical result: the screen helps plan a path, while the machine, thread, fabric, hoop, and stitch density determine how that path becomes an object. If the goal is embroidery, check format, frame, scale, and overlaps before stitching. If the goal is vector work, SVG is the relevant output path.
