Tux Paint is free, ad-free drawing software designed for children, especially ages 3 to 12. It combines a simple canvas and large labeled controls with brushes, stamps, playful sound effects and “Magic” effects, and runs on several desktop and mobile platforms.
What is Tux Paint?
Tux Paint is a child-focused computer art program for making pictures on screen. The project describes it as suitable for preschool and K–6 users and says it is used in schools for computer-literacy drawing activities. The Free Software Foundation also identifies it as a cross-platform drawing program created specifically for children.
It is drawing software, not a physical paint set: children make art with a mouse, touchscreen or other compatible input device. A drawing tablet or stylus is optional hardware, not a required Tux Paint product.
What can children make with it?
Children begin with a blank canvas and choose tools from large, clearly labeled controls. The range supports simple marks and playful experimentation rather than a complicated professional-art workflow.

Drawing and editing tools

The project presentation describes hundreds of stamp images and says at least 85 languages are partially translated; that language figure comes from undated presentation material and does not establish that every screen or feature is fully translated in each language.

What ages is Tux Paint for?
The Tux Paint project identifies its intended audience as children ages 3 to 12, including preschool and K–6 users. That is a broad target range, not a guarantee that every child will find every tool or screen appropriate without adult guidance. Parents and teachers can use the separate configuration tool to adapt the interface and disable options for a particular age group or setting.
Which devices can run Tux Paint?
The official project lists Windows 8 or later, macOS 10.10 or later, Linux, Android 5.0 or later, Haiku, unofficial iOS, and Android-capable Chromebooks. Does Tux Paint cost anything?
Tux Paint is free of cost and ad-free. The project says it is open source, released under the GNU General Public License (GPL), and developed by volunteers. Its digital software does not require buying a Tux Paint-specific drawing device.

The project specifically describes school use around drawing and computer literacy. The separate configuration tool lets adults adjust the experience, including disabling options for a particular environment.

The Google Play listing, accessed in 2026, reports 1M+ downloads and says the developer-provided data-safety information declares that no data is collected and no data is shared with third parties. Those are developer-maintained declarations, not an independent audit, and may change; review the current listing and your school’s policies before use.
