The best Days Until Santa Cricut DIY depends on the display you want. A small painted wood sign uses replaceable number tags and can be stored and reused every Christmas. A large paper advent calendar uses a movable sleigh to mark each day and makes a much bigger wall feature. Both can be cut with a Cricut, but neither format requires a particular brand of machine.
Choose the wood sign when you want a durable, compact project with a short assembly sequence. Choose the paper calendar when you want a dramatic countdown and have room for many cardstock sections. The instructions below keep the two builds separate so you can buy only the supplies your chosen format needs.

Which Santa countdown should you make?
| Feature | Wood sign with hanging tags | Large paper advent calendar |
|---|---|---|
| How the countdown works | Change a numbered wooden tag each day | Move a sleigh along a numbered track |
| Finished format | Painted sign with vinyl lettering and small tags | Layered cardstock sign assembled from cut sections |
| Typical footprint in the documented project | Mini sign; exact finished dimensions are not stated | 28.5 inches wide by approximately 12.25 inches tall |
| Main workload | Paint, weed and transfer vinyl, attach nails, and number tags | Cut, label, and assemble many paper sections |
| Material emphasis | Wood, paint, vinyl, transfer tape, tags, and wire brad nails | Cardstock; the large version used more than 50 sheets of A4 card |
| Best for | A reusable display that fits on a shelf, mantel, or small wall | A statement piece for a large wall or family room |
The dimensions and sheet count in the table belong to the documented giant-calendar design, not to every paper countdown. Likewise, the wood tutorial’s supply list describes one compact sign; you can alter the board, colors, or tag size if your space requires it.

- Wood for the sign blank
- Wood glue
- Paint and a brush
- Red, green, and white adhesive vinyl
- An electronic cutting machine, such as a Cricut Explore or another compatible cutter (the tutorial also names Silhouette)
- Transfer tape
- An application tool and a scraper for pressing vinyl
- Wooden hanging tags for the daily numbers
- Wire brad nails for the tag hooks
The Burton Avenue project makes a free SVG available through its resource library. Check that resource before paying for a cut file. An SVG is a digital design file, not a shipped sign or a package of physical tags; you still need to cut and assemble the project yourself.
1. Prepare and paint the board
- Cut or select a smooth board that leaves enough room for the wording, decorative Santa elements, and a row of hanging tags. Sand splinters and wipe away dust.
- Apply the base paint with a brush and let it dry completely. Vinyl adheres more cleanly to a cured, smooth surface than to tacky paint.
- Before cutting anything, place the blank where you expect to display it. Confirm that the board, tags, and nail spacing will not collide with a shelf, frame, or nearby decoration.
2. Load and cut the SVG
- Import the SVG into your cutter’s design software and check that every layer is assigned the intended color or material.
- Measure the painted board and scale the design to fit. Keep the lettering large enough to read from the room where the sign will hang.
- Place red, green, and white vinyl on the appropriate mats, select the material setting recommended by your machine, and cut each color layer.
- Unload the mats carefully. Preserve small interior pieces if the design uses them for letters or faces.
3. Weed and layer the decoration
- Weed away excess vinyl with a hook or similar tool, leaving only the lettering and shapes you want on the sign.
- Use transfer tape to lift each layer. Burnish the tape with an application tool, align the design over the board, and press it down from the center outward.
- Run a scraper over the transfer tape, then peel it back slowly at a low angle. If a letter lifts, lay the tape back down and burnish again.
- Work one color at a time. Allow the adhesive to settle before handling the sign or adding hardware.
4. Add the numbered tags
- Arrange the wooden tags in a row and decide whether you want the numbers to run left to right or hang in two rows.
- Cut the numbers from the remaining vinyl, weed them, and transfer one number to each tag. Press firmly with the scraper, especially around the tag edges.
- Mark nail positions on the sign. Space them so tags can be removed without catching neighboring tags.
- Tap in the wire brad nails. Leave enough of each nail exposed to support a tag hole without splitting the wood.
- Hang the tags in numerical order, then test the daily swap. A tag should lift off and return to its nail without scraping the paint.
Why this format works
The sign separates the permanent artwork from the changing number. You make the display once, then replace a tag each December. It also uses fewer large pieces than a wall-size paper calendar, so it is easier to store in a shallow box. The trade-off is that you must paint a board, apply layered vinyl accurately, and install hardware; the result is not a single press-and-cut operation.

Option 2: Assemble the giant paper advent calendar
What the documented design includes
Craft with Sarah’s giant advent calendar tracks the number of sleeps until Santa by moving a sleigh to the next number. The completed design is described as 28.5 inches wide and about 12.25 inches tall. Its file is divided into sections so a Cricut can cut it from ordinary 12-by-12-inch, US Letter, or A4 sheets rather than requiring a wide-format cutter.
The creator reports using more than 50 sheets of A4 card for that large build. This is a material report for the stated version, not a general requirement for every cardstock countdown. The file can be resized to reduce both material use and assembly time; about 18 inches wide is suggested as a practical lower bound before pieces become difficult to cut and assemble.

Plan the paper version before cutting
- Measure the wall or furniture where the calendar will go, including the clearance needed to move the sleigh.
- Choose a cardstock weight that your machine can cut reliably and that will hold its shape when the sections are joined.
- Count your available sheets before starting. A design divided into many sections can consume more paper than its finished dimensions suggest.
- Decide whether you will resize the entire file proportionally. Reducing only selected elements can make the sleigh, numbers, or alignment marks stop matching.
- Prepare a large, flat assembly surface. Sorting dozens of pieces by section prevents a later search through mixed piles of cardstock.
Cut and organize the sections
- Open the calendar file in your cutter software and confirm the page or mat size for each section.
- Set the project to the paper size you actually have: 12-by-12-inch, US Letter, or A4. Do not assume a mat setting will automatically match the sheet in your hand.
- Resize the grouped design if necessary. For the documented project, retaining the full 28.5-inch width creates the largest build; reducing toward approximately 18 inches lowers the paper demand but makes every detail smaller.
- Cut one test section first. Check that the machine makes clean scores or cuts and that tabs, slots, and alignment marks are visible.
- Label the reverse of each section as it comes off the mat. Keep sections in separate piles and retain the digital file’s order.
Join the calendar and add the moving sleigh
- Dry-fit adjacent sections before gluing. Edges that appear similar can belong to different positions on the sign.
- Use the file’s tabs, overlaps, or alignment marks to connect the sections. Apply adhesive sparingly so the card does not buckle.
- Build the main sign on a flat surface and let each joined area set before adding the next section.
- Assemble the sleigh and test it along the numbered path. It should move from one day to the next without tearing the track or catching on a raised seam.
- Mount the finished calendar only after the adhesive is fully dry. Support the broadest edges if the cardstock flexes when lifted.
Resizing without creating a frustrating build
Resizing is a useful way to control cost and wall space, but it changes more than the outer border. Smaller numbers are harder to weed or read, narrow tabs are harder to glue, and tiny sleigh details are less forgiving of inaccurate cuts. The documented guidance treats roughly 18 inches wide as a sensible lower limit for keeping pieces manageable. If you need something smaller than that, a compact wood sign is usually the better format rather than shrinking every component again.
Choosing a cutter, file, and material workflow
Cricut is one compatible option, not the project itself
Both formats are cut-file projects. A Cricut machine is one compatible electronic cutter; the wood tutorial also names another cutter type. What matters is whether your machine can read the supplied SVG, handle your chosen vinyl or cardstock, and cut the selected mat size. If you already own a compatible machine, the project does not require buying another one.

Check the file before buying supplies
- For the wood sign, look for the free SVG in the creator’s resource library before purchasing a design.
- Confirm whether the download contains separate color layers, tag numbers, and any alignment pieces you expect.
- For the paper calendar, verify that the file is divided into the mat or page sizes you can use.
- Treat a digital file listing as software, not as a physical product. It will not include the board, cardstock, vinyl, nails, or finished decoration.
Match materials to the chosen format
Do not buy the wood-sign vinyl kit for the paper calendar, or dozens of cardstock sheets for a tag sign, until you have selected a format. The wood build needs adhesive vinyl and transfer supplies; the paper build’s main consumable is cardstock. Paint, glue, and hardware belong to the wood version, while the paper version needs enough flat assembly space for its sections.

Vinyl will not stick to the sign
- Check that the paint is fully dry and free of dust or oil.
- Burnish the transfer tape before lifting the design and again after placing it.
- Peel the tape slowly at a low angle. Pulling upward can lift small letters.
Letters or numbers are misaligned
- Use a temporary strip of tape or a straightedge to establish a baseline before pressing the vinyl.
- Apply one color layer at a time and compare it with the original SVG preview.
- For tags, mark a consistent center point so every number sits at the same height.
Cardstock sections do not meet
- Confirm the software did not alter the grouped design’s proportions during resizing.
- Check that the selected page size matches the physical paper and that no printer-style scaling was applied before cutting.
- Dry-fit several neighboring pieces before gluing; a single reversed section can shift an entire edge.
The sleigh catches or the tags are hard to change
- Flatten raised seams and remove adhesive squeeze-out from the paper track.
- On the wood sign, reposition nails if tag holes scrape the board or neighboring tags.
- Leave enough clearance around moving parts when deciding where to mount the finished display.
Display, storage, and reuse
Hang the paper calendar where the full width is visible and the sleigh can be reached by the person changing it each day. Because the documented large version is 28.5 inches wide, measure doors, stair turns, and the final wall before assembling it in another room. Store the finished paper sections flat and protected from moisture; label the piles if you disassemble the calendar after Christmas.

For the wood sign, keep the numbered tags together in a small envelope or lidded box and store the sign upright so the vinyl is not pressed against rough objects. At the next holiday season, inspect the brad nails and tags before hanging them. Replace a damaged tag rather than forcing it onto a nail that has loosened.
Final decision
Make the painted wood sign if you want a compact, reusable countdown with interchangeable numbers and a manageable material list. Make the giant paper advent calendar if the visual impact of a 28.5-inch-wide display matters more than the time, cardstock, and assembly space it demands. In either case, choose the file and finished size first, then purchase only the vinyl, paint, hardware, or cardstock that belongs to that format.
