To create an ultra-modern room, build around four adaptable ingredients: architectural lighting, controlled metallic finishes, a neutral color foundation and contemporary flooring finished with a statement rug. They are not a shopping list. Each choice should solve a room need, coordinate with what you already own and be used with enough restraint to remain useful as your taste changes.
The framework comes from Laura Barry’s decorating guide for Better Homes & Gardens Australia, published July 24, 2018. It is a practical starting point rather than a claim about the latest trends or a universal formula. The original advice is to avoid overusing any single look: “The key to longevity is restraint, so don’t go overboard with one trend, because it will date quickly.”

Ultra-modern style is easiest to understand as a relationship between structure, surface, color and floor plane. Lighting supplies strong lines and a focal shape. Metal introduces a crisp reflective note. Neutrals keep the background calm. Flooring and a carefully selected rug establish texture, pattern and scale.
| Element | Choices named in the decorating guide | Decision to make in your room |
|---|---|---|
| Architectural lighting | Pendant lights, track lighting, floor lamps, table lamps and fixtures with sleek, unusual or geometric forms | What the room needs illuminated, and what fixture scale and shape fit that task |
| Metallic finishes | Steel or chrome frames and bases with high-shine surfaces; mirrors, lamps, coffee tables, chairs and sofas | Where one or two reflective accents can reinforce the room without making every surface compete |
| Neutral colors | Beige, cream, white, black, grey and taupe | Which base color coordinates with existing furniture and gives accessories a clear backdrop |
| Contemporary flooring | Wood, stone or polished cement, plus a geometric or abstract statement rug | How the floor and rug provide contrast, pattern and a visual anchor for the furniture |
Use the elements as a sequence rather than four unrelated purchases. First understand the room’s function and existing finishes. Then choose a neutral paint direction, define the lighting, add a measured metallic note and finish the floor with a rug whose pattern and colors relate to the scheme.

1. Choose architectural lighting for the room’s job
Architectural lighting is the most visibly structural of the four ingredients. The guide favors strong shapes, clean lines, pendants and track lighting, while also allowing geometric or unusual fixtures. The important qualification is that appearance comes after the room’s lighting needs. A sculptural fitting that leaves a work surface dim is not a successful modern solution.
Start with activities, not a fixture photograph
List what happens in the room before looking at products. A dining area may need light concentrated over a table; a living room may need a general source plus reading light; a hallway may need a continuous, directional line; a bedroom may need softer illumination near the bed and clear light at a dressing area. This inventory tells you whether a pendant, track system, floor lamp, table lamp or a combination is appropriate.

- Mark the areas where people read, cook, work, eat or move through the space.
- Note existing electrical points and whether the new fitting will be the main source or an accent.
- Choose a fixture whose scale relates to the furniture below it rather than selecting the largest shape available.
- Check that the fitting’s projection, height and direction leave doors, sightlines and walking paths comfortable.
Use line and geometry deliberately
Sleek lines can echo the edges of cabinetry, a rectangular table or a painted wall panel. A round or angular pendant can provide contrast when the architecture is mostly rectilinear. Track lighting can emphasize artwork, a textured wall or a circulation route; a pendant can act as the room’s central visual marker. These are design relationships, not rules that every room must follow.
Coordinate the fixture with paint
Paint is the broadest surface in most rooms, so test the lighting decision against the wall color. A pale beige, cream or grey can let a dark geometric fixture read clearly. White walls can make a polished metal fitting more prominent. Black or deeper taupe walls can turn the fixture into a bright outline, but only if the room’s existing furnishings support that contrast. Look at sample boards under the actual lamps you plan to use; the same paint can appear different under warm and cool sources.
2. Add metallic finishes as controlled punctuation
Steel and chrome frames or bases with high-shine finishes provide the reflective component of this style. The finish can appear in a mirror, lamp, coffee table, chair or sofa; you do not need to replace every piece of furniture. One well-placed metallic object can establish the idea, while a second related detail can connect it to the rest of the room.
Select a finish and a role
Decide whether the metal will be structural or decorative. A steel or chrome base on a table or chair contributes a visible outline. A metallic mirror or lamp supplies a smaller highlight. In either case, specify where the eye should land: above a console, beside a sofa, over a coffee table or at the edge of a seating group.

Repeat without creating a showroom effect
Repetition is useful when it is quiet. For example, a chrome lamp can relate to a steel-framed coffee table, while the rest of the room remains in wood, fabric and painted surfaces. Avoid scattering unrelated shiny objects across every shelf. The goal is a readable visual rhythm, not maximum reflectivity.
Use geometry as an optional reinforcement
Geometric patterns can strengthen the modern language when they appear in a mirror frame, table base or small accessory. Keep the pattern legible against the wall color. If the room already contains angular furniture, a simpler metallic accent may be more effective than another complex shape.
3. Build the room on a neutral color foundation
The guide names beige, cream, white, black, grey and taupe as starting points. These colors are presented as a clean backdrop for furniture and accessories, not as objectively required choices. Select the neutral that works with the pieces you intend to keep and the amount of contrast you want.
Choose the base by looking at fixed elements
Begin with flooring, cabinetry, stone, upholstery and large wood pieces. A cream or beige can sit comfortably beside warm timber. Grey or taupe may coordinate with cooler stone and steel. White offers a visibly clear background, while black can be used as a concentrated wall or joinery color rather than an instruction to darken the entire room. The correct choice is the one that makes the existing palette feel intentional.

- Paint large sample boards in the leading neutral options instead of judging a tiny color chip.
- Place the boards near the floor, sofa, curtains and metallic accents you will actually use.
- View them during the room’s different lighting conditions, including the architectural fixture switched on.
- Choose the color that keeps those materials coordinated without competing with the planned rug or artwork.
This process is especially important when a high-shine metal or strongly patterned rug is part of the scheme. The wall should support those features, not introduce a fifth competing statement.
Use contrast as a design decision
A neutral palette does not mean every surface has the same value. You can create definition with a light wall, darker furniture, black details and a mid-tone rug, or keep the walls and furnishings close in value and let the metal and pattern supply the contrast. Beige, cream, white, black, grey and taupe can be combined, but limit the number of competing undertones so the room reads as one composition.

4. Update the floor and anchor it with a statement rug
The flooring recommendations are wood, stone and polished cement. The guide does not rank them or provide cost, maintenance or durability comparisons, so choose among them according to the project and the existing building rather than assuming one is superior. The accessible styling intervention is a statement rug that breaks up a neutral or monochrome palette.
Choose pattern and color together
Geometric and abstract designs are the clearest ways to introduce pattern. Select colors that complement the wall and furniture palette while standing out enough to be seen. A rug can repeat a muted grey or taupe from the paint, pick up a dark line from the lighting, or provide a measured counterpoint to a chrome accent.

Use the seating arrangement to determine the rug’s footprint. It should visually connect the pieces that belong together rather than sit as a small island in the middle of a large room. In a dining area, account for the chairs when they are pulled out. In a bedroom, decide whether the rug frames the bed or sits as a runner beside it. These are layout decisions; the pattern should follow the chosen scale, not dictate it.
Let the floor remain part of the composition
If the underlying wood, stone or polished cement is already a strong feature, choose a rug whose pattern leaves enough of that surface visible. If the floor is visually quiet, the rug can carry more of the room’s contrast. Keep the transition between rug, painted walls and metallic pieces deliberate so the eye can move through the room without stopping at disconnected accents.
A practical order for putting the look together
Working in this order reduces expensive changes and keeps the four elements connected.
- Record the room’s function. Write down the activities, furniture that must remain and the areas that need direct or general light.
- Map the fixed surfaces. Note the existing floor, trim, cabinetry, stone and large upholstery. These determine which neutral paint families are likely to coordinate.
- Test the paint direction. Compare beige, cream, white, black, grey or taupe samples beside those fixed materials and under the intended lighting.
- Plan the architectural fixture. Select a pendant, track light, floor lamp, table lamp or combination based on the task, then choose a shape and scale that support the room’s lines.
- Place one primary metallic accent. A mirror, lamp, table, chair, sofa base or another steel- or chrome-finished piece can establish the reflective note. Add a second related detail only if the room needs connection.
- Finish with the floor treatment. Keep the existing wood, stone or polished cement if it works, or plan the desired update. Choose a geometric or abstract rug whose colors complement the neutral palette and whose size fits the furniture group.
- Edit before buying more. Remove any object that repeats a trend without adding function, contrast or cohesion.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Buying the fixture before defining the task
A dramatic pendant can dominate a room while leaving a desk, counter or reading chair poorly served. Return to the activity map and decide whether the fitting is general, task or accent lighting. Add a different fixture type where the original shape cannot meet the need.

Turning every surface metallic
Multiple shiny frames, lamps and tables can erase hierarchy. Keep the strongest metal at one focal point, then repeat it in a smaller supporting detail or stop at the first successful connection.
Choosing a neutral in isolation
A paint sample that looks elegant on a screen may clash with the floor or upholstery in the room. Test large boards beside fixed elements and view them with the selected lighting before painting all the walls.
Using a rug that is too timid or too dominant
A very small rug can fail to connect the furniture, while a large high-contrast pattern can compete with geometric lighting and metallic shapes. Adjust the rug’s size, pattern complexity or color contrast so it supplies one clear layer of interest.
Following all four ideas at maximum intensity
The original guide’s restraint warning is the safeguard. If the lighting is sculptural, keep the metal and rug quieter. If the rug is the statement, let the walls and fixture provide a calm frame. Ultra-modern style lasts longer when each element has a job instead of every element demanding attention.

Living room
- Identify the seating and reading positions before choosing a pendant or floor lamp.
- Use a metallic mirror or lamp to connect the lighting with the coffee table or sofa base.
- Let a geometric rug define the seating group against the neutral walls.
Dining area
- Center the lighting decision on the table and the light needed while eating.
- Repeat a steel or chrome detail in the table, chairs or nearby storage rather than across every object.
- Make sure the rug, if used, accommodates the chairs as they move.
Bedroom
- Separate general illumination from bedside and dressing tasks.
- Use the neutral paint as a quiet background for a single metallic lamp or mirror.
- Choose a rug placement that frames the bed or provides a comfortable landing area without obscuring the floor’s character.
Entry or hallway
- Use track lighting or a slim architectural fitting where directional emphasis is useful.
- Allow a mirror to provide the metallic accent and visual pause.
- Keep the rug pattern and dimensions appropriate to the circulation path.
The durable interpretation
Ultra-modern style does not require a complete renovation or a room filled with identical finishes. Start with the room’s function, establish a neutral painted backdrop, select lighting with a clear task, introduce metal through one or two purposeful pieces and use a contemporary floor treatment or statement rug to set the scale. The result is strongest when the four ingredients cooperate and none is allowed to overwhelm the room.
For the original four-part decorating framework, see Laura Barry’s “4 things you need for ultra-modern style” in Better Homes & Gardens Australia (July 24, 2018).
