Leonardo.Ai is more than a text-to-image generator: it brings image creation, reference guidance, sketch-to-image tools, editing, upscaling, video features, and developer tools into one platform. For painters and other visual creators, its main advantage is the ability to explore an idea, steer the result with references or a sketch, then refine it. Whether that workflow is right for you depends on how much control, privacy, and commercial certainty you need.

What Leonardo.Ai does—and who it suits

Leonardo.Ai is a browser-based visual-creation suite. You can generate images from text, transform existing images, guide outputs with reference images, edit parts of a composition, remove backgrounds, upscale results, and explore video and motion tools. It also offers personal model training and an API for developers. The Leonardo API overview describes image and video generation, custom model training, private inputs, and production use subject to Leonardo’s terms.

For painters, illustrators, and concept artists, the useful distinction is between asking for a finished picture and using generated images as visual material: composition studies, palette ideas, lighting references, character concepts, or a starting point for a hand-painted piece. Generated results are not a substitute for careful observation or a guarantee of a usable final image, but references and canvas tools can make exploration more directed than prompt-only generation.

When it is a good fit

  • You want a guided interface rather than setting up a local image-generation workflow.
  • You want to test visual directions, then steer them with sketches, image references, or editing.
  • You need several models and presets to compare for a particular style or task.
  • You want an individual creation app now, with a possible API integration later.

When another workflow may suit you better

  • You need a strictly private free workflow, or guaranteed exclusive legal rights to every result.
  • You need accurate typography or logos directly in generated images.
  • You mainly need professional layout and retouching in an established design suite.
  • You need published enterprise infrastructure or service-level commitments without negotiating a custom arrangement.

Make your first image

Leonardo’s beginner guide describes a quick-start flow in which the home page selects a suitable model automatically; the expanded Image Creation workflow offers more controls. Labels and menu locations can change, so use the live interface if a control has moved.

  1. Log in to Leonardo.Ai and open the web application.
  2. Enter a description in the home-page prompt box and click Generate to try the quick-start workflow.
  3. For more control, open the Image Creation tool and choose available dimensions, a style or preset, reference images, and—if desired—a specific model.
  4. Review the generated options and keep the strongest one as the basis for the next iteration.

Leonardo’s beginner image-generation guide explains the home-page prompt flow and expanded creation controls.

A prompt framework for visual studies

Put the most important information first. A useful framework is subject + action or pose + environment + composition + lighting + mood + medium or style + constraints. For example:

A solitary astronaut repairing a communications relay on a red desert, wide cinematic composition, low-angle view, warm sunset rim light, dust in the air, hard-surface science-fiction concept art, high detail, clear focal subject, no text or watermark

For a painting reference, substitute details that matter to your work: the subject’s silhouette, the direction of light, the dominant color family, or an empty area where you want to place a focal element. Longer prompts are not inherently better. Conflicting directions—such as asking for both a tightly cropped portrait and a full-body figure—make the goal less clear.

Improve results through controlled iteration

Instead of rewriting the entire prompt after each batch, treat each generation as a visual decision. First settle the subject and composition; then refine lighting, palette, materials, or mood. Prompt wording behaves differently across models, so regard style terms as directions to test, not reliable switches.

  1. Describe the subject and its action, then specify the camera view or composition.
  2. Generate a small batch and identify the image with the strongest structure.
  3. Change one or two variables at a time so you can see which instruction affects the result.
  4. Use the chosen result as an input or reference when you want to develop it rather than start over.
  5. Make local edits, compare them with the saved original, and upscale only after the composition is acceptable.

If the composition keeps drifting, simplify the prompt, move the key subject and camera instructions to the beginning, and remove competing style adjectives. A sketch or edge-style reference can help anchor pose and layout when text alone does not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a model and preset for the task

The home-page flow can select a model for you; the creation workflow lets you choose manually. Automatic selection is useful while learning or brainstorming. When style, realism, prompt adherence, or lettering matters, compare models using the same prompt, aspect ratio, and reference image rather than assuming the newest or most expensive option is best.

Leonardo’s pricing page listed its own and third-party models—including Lucid Origin, Lucid Realism, Phoenix 1.0 and 0.9, FLUX Dev and Schnell, Motion 1.0, Motion 2.0 and Motion 2.0 Fast, Hailuo 2.3 and Hailuo 2.3 Fast, and Wan 2.6—when checked around August 16, 2026. This is a time-sensitive catalog, not a permanent feature list; model access and relaxed-generation eligibility vary by plan and can change. Check the current plan and model details before choosing a subscription.

Use Image Guidance to steer an image

Image Guidance lets you use an uploaded image or a Leonardo result to influence a new generation. Depending on the selected model and available controls, guidance can emphasize style, content, a character, or structural cues such as a sketch or edges. Newer workflows support up to six reference images on eligible plans or models, but availability is not universal.

  1. Open Image Generation and click the image icon at the far left of the prompt bar.
  2. Choose an existing upload, a generated image, or upload a new one.
  3. Select the applicable guidance mode, then adjust its strength if that control is available.
  4. Enter a prompt describing what to retain and what should change, then click Generate.

Leonardo’s Image Guidance help page describes the web workflow. The API image-guidance documentation describes supported guidance parameters and strength levels for applicable types, while noting that API features do not necessarily match the web interface feature for feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pick guidance to match the problem

  • Style reference: help carry over a visual language such as palette or painterly treatment.
  • Content reference: influence the broad subject or arrangement.
  • Character reference: help keep a recurring character recognizable across images.
  • Sketch or edge guidance: preserve a pose, silhouette, or layout.
  • Multiple references: combine elements such as a character, product, palette, and setting, while recognizing that competing signals can make results less consistent.

Guidance influences an output; it does not guarantee a precise copy, stable identity, correct object geometry, brand accuracy, or permission to use the reference. For a recurring character, start from a clear reference, keep defining features explicit, and make changes incrementally. Reference tools can help consistency, but do not ensure it.

Turn a sketch into an image with Realtime Canvas

Realtime Canvas is useful when you already have a composition in mind but want to explore its treatment. You can draw with brush and eraser tools or upload an image, add a prompt, and adjust guidance, a style preset, and Creativity Strength. The workflow also supports iteration through Output to Input, along with refinement, background removal, and upscaling.

  1. Expand More in the sidebar and select Realtime Canvas.
  2. Draw a rough composition or upload an image; add a prompt if it helps describe the intended result.
  3. Adjust guidance, style preset, and Creativity Strength, then review the output.
  4. Use Output to Input to iterate on the result, or refine and download it when ready.

The controls and paths are described in Leonardo’s Realtime Canvas guide. Lower creativity strength generally stays closer to the sketch; higher strength permits broader changes and may lose the original pose, shape, or color arrangement. Treat realtime output as a way to explore and steer an idea, not automatically as a final-resolution asset.

Edit and prepare an image without losing the original

Different tools solve different problems: regeneration makes a new image from a prompt; image-to-image transforms an existing one; inpainting replaces a selected region; outpainting extends the canvas; background removal isolates the subject; and upscaling increases output size or perceived detail. None guarantees that untouched areas remain identical or that an edit will blend perfectly.

  1. Save the strongest original before editing.
  2. Make one localized change at a time. Keep a mask tight for a small correction; use a broader area when lighting or perspective also needs work.
  3. Compare the result with the original, checking faces, hands, accessories, edges, lighting, and repeated textures.
  4. When adding lettering or a logo, leave suitable space in the image and finish the typography manually in a design application using approved brand assets.
  5. Upscale only after the composition and edits are final.

Common cleanup issues include changed facial features, inconsistent accessories, altered labels, lighting mismatches, seams, and unexpected details beyond a mask. AI-generated lettering and logos can be unreliable; proofread any text and do not rely on generated marks as accurate brand artwork.

Is Leonardo.Ai free, and how do tokens work?

Leonardo’s pricing page showed the following plan figures around August 16, 2026. Prices are listed before tax; confirm the price, allowances, and availability for your region at checkout.

Plan Price shown Allowance and notable features shown
Free $0/month 150 fast tokens per day; creations are public.
Essential $12/month 8,500 fast tokens/month, private generations, and 10 personal AI models.
Premium $30/month 25,000 fast tokens/month, 20 personal AI models, and selected relaxed image generation.
Ultimate $60/month 60,000 fast tokens/month, 50 personal AI models, and selected relaxed image and video generation.
Team Starter $72/month total, listed as $24/seat 75,000 shared tokens and team privacy and collaboration features.
Team Growth $144/month total, listed as $48/seat 180,000 shared tokens and broader team model-training access.

Team figures and features are from Leonardo’s team plans page; individual plan figures are from its pricing page. Both can change.

Tokens are a usage currency, not a fixed price per image. Generation, video, background removal, upscaling, and other processing can consume tokens at different rates depending on the feature, model, settings, and computational load. Leonardo’s token-usage guide explains why costs vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Selected relaxed generation on Premium and Ultimate does not mean unlimited priority output across every model. Relaxed jobs can run at lower priority and take longer; queue, concurrency, and model eligibility restrictions apply. If tokens run low, options may include waiting for the plan reset, using relaxed generation where eligible, buying top-up tokens if available, or reserving costly video and upscale operations for the selected image.

Commercial use, ownership, and privacy

Commercial permission and ownership are different questions. Leonardo’s current plan materials say paid subscribers retain ownership and intellectual-property rights in generated images, subject to its Terms of Service, and paid plans enable private generations. The same pricing information says free users receive a non-exclusive, royalty-free commercial-use license while Leonardo retains broader rights to use, reproduce, modify, and distribute free creations. Free creations are public. Leonardo’s commercial-use guidance also describes broad rights that can apply to images made public under the service terms.

Before generating or sharing work, check the visibility setting and the terms applying to your plan. Avoid uploading confidential client assets, unreleased products, private photographs, or sensitive personal information unless you have reviewed the relevant terms and privacy controls. Obtain permission before using another person’s photograph, artwork, logo, or character as a reference.

A service license does not guarantee that an image is exclusive, free of third-party rights, or eligible for copyright protection. Rules vary by jurisdiction and by the human contribution to the work. Check trademark, publicity, privacy, likeness, and copyright issues separately; for high-value commercial work, seek qualified legal advice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Teams and API: when creation becomes a shared workflow

Team plans are aimed at organizations that need shared token pools, private team generations, collections, and model-training access. Leonardo listed Team Starter at $72/month total ($24/seat) and Team Growth at $144/month total ($48/seat), with up to six simultaneous generations on the listed plans, when checked around August 16, 2026. Confirm seat requirements and current features on the team plans page.

The API is a different product from the consumer web app: it is for developers building generation into software or automated asset workflows. Leonardo’s API page listed pay-as-you-go access starting with $5 in credit, up to 10 concurrent generations on the self-serve option, and custom plans for higher concurrency, model-based discounts, or dedicated support around August 16, 2026. Leonardo states that API input images are private and not used for training, can be deleted via the Delete Init Image API endpoint, and that outputs can be made private with the relevant parameter. These statements are subject to its terms; API usage also requires implementation and cost monitoring. See the Leonardo API page.

Do not assume every web feature is available through the API in the same way: the image-guidance API documentation notes that feature parity is not complete.

If your priority is… Consider Why it may fit
Reference-led concept development, sketch transformation, and model variety Leonardo.Ai Combines generation, guidance, canvas, editing, and model choices in an AI-first platform.
Editing integrated with Adobe tools Adobe Firefly Fits creators already using Photoshop, Express, and other Adobe workflows; plan features and generative-credit limits vary.
Style-first exploration Midjourney Worth comparing if an opinionated, aesthetic image-generation workflow is your main priority.
Text-heavy posters, signs, or headline concepts Ideogram Worth testing when lettering within an image is central to the task.
Automated product integration Leonardo API Provides a developer path for image and video generation, subject to usage costs and implementation needs.

Adobe’s Firefly features page and plans page list a free tier, Firefly Standard at $9.99/month, and Firefly Pro at $19.99/month when checked around August 16, 2026; prices, promotions, and regional availability can change. Leonardo is a more natural fit when reference-driven iteration and multiple models are the priority, while Adobe may be more convenient if your production work already lives in its tools. Compare alternatives using the task you actually need to finish rather than expecting one generator to lead at everything.
