Ctrl + J on Windows (or Command + J on macOS) runs Photoshop’s New Layer Via Copy command. With no active selection, it copies the selected layer’s content to a new layer; with a selection, it copies only those pixels. The original remains in place, so you can move, mask, transform, retouch, or hide the copy.

Adobe lists the shortcut in its current desktop reference as “New layer(s) via copy.” View Adobe’s Photoshop keyboard-shortcut reference.

What Ctrl + J does

Platform Shortcut Command
Windows Ctrl + J New Layer Via Copy
macOS Command + J New Layer Via Copy

This is not a universal “duplicate anything” command. Photoshop evaluates the active layer and the current pixel selection. A selection changes what is copied, while the layer type can affect how the result behaves.

Duplicate a full layer

  1. Open the Layers panel with Window > Layers if necessary.
  2. Click the layer you want to copy.
  3. Remove any selection with Ctrl + D (Windows) or Command + D (macOS).
  4. Press Ctrl + J or Command + J.
  5. Look for a new layer, usually named something like “Layer copy,” directly above the original.

The copy occupies the same position, so the canvas may look unchanged. Hide the original layer, or select the Move tool and drag the copy, to verify it exists. The copied layer can then be transformed, masked, hidden, or edited without changing the untouched original in ordinary pixel-layer workflows.

Copy only part of a layer

  1. Select the source layer in the Layers panel.
  2. Use a Marquee, Lasso, Object Selection, or Quick Selection tool to mark the subject or area.
  3. Press Ctrl + J / Command + J.
  4. Hide the original or move the new layer to see the extracted pixels.

Only the selected pixels are placed on the new layer; the rest of the source layer is not copied. Feathering or partially selected edges become soft or partially transparent. This is different from Layer > New > Layer Via Cut, which removes the selected pixels from the original. Adobe documents both workflows in its layer and group guide.

Ctrl + J versus Duplicate Layer

Method Selection-sensitive? Best use
Ctrl + J / Command + J Yes Quickly copy all or part of the active layer in the same document
Layer > Duplicate Layer Primarily duplicates the selected layer or group Name the copy or send it to another open document
Drag to the New Layer button No selection workflow Visual duplication from the Layers panel
Alt/Option-drag with the Move tool Uses the active content or selection Duplicate while repositioning
Ctrl + Alt + T / Command + Option + T Creates a duplicate and enters Free Transform Copy, scale, rotate, or move immediately

Layer > Duplicate Layer opens explicit controls for the name and destination document. It is the clearer choice when those details matter; Adobe’s instructions are in Duplicate layers in Photoshop.

Selections, multiple layers, and groups

Multiple layers

In the Layers panel, hold Ctrl (Windows) or Command (macOS) and click nonadjacent layers. Use Shift-click for a continuous range. Adobe explains these selection methods in its layer-selection guide. Duplicate the selection using the command appropriate to your Photoshop release, then inspect the panel to confirm exactly which layers were copied. Adjustment, fill, linked, locked, and Smart Object layers may not behave like ordinary pixel layers.

Groups

Photoshop supports duplicating groups, but do not assume that Ctrl + J always treats a group as a single, predictable object in every desktop release. For an unambiguous result, select the group and use the Layers panel or Layer > Duplicate Group where available. Adobe also documents creating a document from a layer or group in this guide.

Smart Objects: linked and independent copies

A Smart Object is the major exception to the assumption that every duplicate is independent. Layer Via Copy can create another Smart Object layer that remains linked to the original Smart Object contents. Editing the embedded source can therefore update both layers.

For two Smart Objects that must evolve separately, choose Layer > Smart Objects > New Smart Object Via Copy. Adobe distinguishes that independent-copy command from ordinary layer duplication in its Smart Object duplication documentation.

Useful applications for painters and designers

Protect a retouching original

Duplicate a background before healing, cloning, sharpening, or applying a filter. Keep the original hidden as a fallback, and reduce the working copy’s opacity to compare the result.

Extract a subject or detail

Select a person, object, brush mark, or texture and press Ctrl + J. The isolated pixels can be masked, recolored, or composited without cutting them out of the source layer.

Build repeated elements

Duplicate a logo, painted motif, or texture, then transform each copy. Use Ctrl + Alt + T / Command + Option + T when you want duplication and Free Transform in one operation.

Experiment with blending and effects

Try a different blending mode, opacity, mask, or filter on a copy. A duplicate is a safety layer, not a complete nondestructive workflow: painting, rasterizing, or merging on that copy still alters it permanently. Masks, adjustment layers, Smart Objects, and Smart Filters preserve more editability.

Copied layers can retain relevant masks and layer effects, but inspect the result for complex layer types; Adobe describes layer-copy behavior in its layer-management documentation.

Why Ctrl + J appears not to work

Nothing visibly changes

  • The new layer is directly above an identical original.
  • The source layer is hidden, or the duplicate is outside the visible canvas.
  • The Layers panel is scrolled or collapsed.
  • A modal dialog, text-editing field, or another application has keyboard focus.
  • Your shortcut assignment has been customized.

Check the Layers panel, hide the original, and move the suspected copy. If needed, use Layer > Duplicate Layer or Layer > New > Layer Via Copy to confirm the intended command.

Only part of the image was copied

An active selection is the usual cause. Press Ctrl + D / Command + D and repeat with the intended layer selected.

The wrong layer was copied

Click the layer directly in the Layers panel rather than relying on the canvas. The Move tool’s Auto Select option can select the top layer or group under the pointer; Adobe explains that behavior in its selection guide.

Smart Object copies change together

That indicates a linked copy. Use Layer > Smart Objects > New Smart Object Via Copy for an independent version.

Copied content changes size in another document

Documents with different resolutions can make copied pixels appear disproportionately sized. Match resolutions before copying or use Free Transform afterward. See Adobe’s copy-and-paste selection guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Ctrl + J duplicate the whole image?

No. It copies the active layer, or only the active selection on that layer, to a new layer. It does not duplicate the entire document.

What is the Mac equivalent of Ctrl + J?

Press Command + J.

How do I duplicate a layer into another document?

Select the layer, choose Layer > Duplicate Layer, then select the destination document and confirm.

Is Ctrl + J available in Photoshop on the web?

Adobe lists New Layer Via Copy among Photoshop on the web shortcuts, but web and desktop Photoshop do not provide identical features or layer behavior.

The Bottom Line

Use Ctrl + J or Command + J for a fast copy of a layer or selected pixels. Choose Duplicate Layer for naming or destination controls, New Smart Object Via Copy when Smart Objects must be independent, and masks or adjustment layers when reversibility matters more than a second pixel layer.
