Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year is PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse. Microsoft Office usually does not offer a built-in Pantone library, so the dependable workflow is to obtain a Pantone-informed RGB or Hex equivalent, enter it through Office’s custom color controls, and save the result as a reusable theme. For recurring work, build the theme in desktop PowerPoint first, then use it in Word and Excel templates.
What is Pantone’s Color of the Year 2025?
Mocha Mousse is Pantone’s 2025 selection, identified as PANTONE 17-1230. Pantone describes it as a warm, mellow brown associated with chocolate, coffee, comfort, harmony, and everyday indulgence. Its neutrality makes it suitable for business documents as well as more visual work.

Be precise about the reference. Pantone’s systems use library and material suffixes. For example, the official paper reference is listed as 17-1230 TPG; another material or library may use a different designation. Do not treat every warm brown as interchangeable with the Pantone standard. See Pantone’s official 2025 announcement and 17-1230 TPG reference.
Pantone is not the same as an Office color
Pantone colors identify physical standards in proprietary libraries. Office works primarily with screen-oriented values such as RGB and hexadecimal colors. A Hex or RGB value is therefore a digital conversion or approximation—not a universal replacement for a physical Pantone swatch.
Pantone warns that its online color displays are computer simulations and may not match physical standards. Appearance can also change because of monitor calibration, operating-system color profiles, brightness, night-mode settings, Office rendering, printer characteristics, ink, and paper stock.
Even RGB and Hex values may differ between Pantone Connect and physical Color Bridge libraries because measurement conditions can differ. For that reason, avoid publishing an unsourced value as “the official Mocha Mousse Hex code.”
How to get a usable digital equivalent
Best option: use Pantone Connect
- Open Pantone Connect.
- Search for 17-1230 Mocha Mousse.
- Select the relevant Pantone library or material reference.
- Record the RGB or Hex value for screen and Office work.
- Record CMYK or the appropriate physical reference if the project will be printed.
- Use the same approved values in the Office theme and brand guide.
Pantone Connect supports Pantone-library searches and RGB, CMYK, Hex, and Lab data. It also provides palette features and accessibility-related checks. Availability and plan features can change, so confirm current details on Pantone’s site.
Use an existing brand specification when one exists
If you are working for a company or client, use the organization’s approved digital brand values instead of independently converting the swatch. This prevents different employees from choosing different approximations of the same Pantone reference.
Record the following in the style guide:
- Pantone designation and library suffix
- RGB and Hex values
- Conversion source and date
- Intended medium: screen, Office document, or print
- Approved text and background pairings
Create a Mocha Mousse theme in PowerPoint
PowerPoint is the best starting point because Microsoft documents its custom theme-color workflow and says saved theme colors can be reused in Word and Excel.
- Open PowerPoint and create or open a presentation.
- Select the Design tab.
- Open Variants.
- Select Colors, then Customize Colors.
- Choose a theme-color slot such as Accent 1 or Accent 2.
- Open the color picker and select More Colors if needed.
- Enter the RGB values supplied by Pantone Connect or your approved brand guide.
- Repeat for supporting colors, text, background, and hyperlink slots.
- Name the scheme, such as Mocha Mousse Office Theme.
- Select Save.
Microsoft’s documented workflow is described in Create or delete a custom theme color. Labels can vary slightly by Office version and operating system.

A practical theme-slot assignment
| Theme slot | Suggested role |
|---|---|
| Accent 1 | Mocha Mousse primary accent |
| Accent 2 | Light cream or warm beige |
| Accent 3 | Muted blue, slate, or deep teal contrast |
| Accent 4 | Soft sage or olive |
| Accent 5 | Muted rose, terracotta, or ochre |
| Accent 6 | Dark charcoal or espresso |
| Dark 1 | Main body text |
| Light 1 | Main document background |
| Hyperlink | Clearly distinguishable blue or contrasting accent |
| Followed Hyperlink | Darker or desaturated hyperlink variant |
Do not assign Mocha Mousse to every slot. A useful theme creates hierarchy and functional contrast rather than making every object brown.
Apply the theme in Word
- Open Word and select the Design tab.
- Select Colors.
- Choose the saved custom theme.
- Apply theme colors to heading styles, title styles, tables, shapes, text boxes, borders, and rules.
Use Word styles instead of manually coloring each heading. This makes the document easier to update and improves structural navigation. Microsoft documents the Word path under Design > Colors.
Turn the design into a reusable Word template
- Apply the custom theme to a blank document.
- Set fonts, heading styles, margins, spacing, headers, and table styles.
- Save the document as a Word template.
- Place it in the organization’s approved template location.
- Tell users to start from the template rather than recoloring individual documents.
A theme coordinates colors, fonts, and effects; a template also provides the document structure and formatting rules.
Apply the theme in Excel
- Open Excel and select the Page Layout tab.
- Select Colors.
- Choose the saved custom theme.
- Use theme colors for table headers, dashboard areas, borders, charts, and KPI cells.
Where possible, use theme-linked table and chart styles rather than hard-coded colors. This lets you revise the palette centrally and reduces inconsistency across workbooks.
Create an Excel default or reusable workbook
- Apply the theme to a blank workbook.
- Configure worksheet formatting, tables, formulas, charts, and dashboard styles.
- Save it as an Excel template.
- Use Book.xltx if your goal is a default blank-workbook format.
- Create a new workbook to verify that the formatting loads correctly.
Use Mocha Mousse without overwhelming the design
Mocha Mousse is most effective as one part of a palette. A practical starting ratio is:
- 60–70%: neutral background such as warm white or pale cream
- 20–30%: Mocha Mousse or a related mid-tone
- 5–10%: a stronger contrasting accent
This is a design recommendation, not a Pantone or Microsoft requirement. Pantone’s 2025 palette materials show the color paired with warm and cool companions, including blue, gray, green, floral, and confection-inspired combinations. Browse the 2025 palette concepts for direction, then select values appropriate for your own brand and accessibility requirements.
Good applications
- Mocha Mousse title bars with tested light text
- Light cream pages with dark brown or charcoal headings
- Brown rules and callout borders
- A restrained chart series, supported by other hues or markers
- Warm cover pages and proposal section dividers
Applications to avoid
- Small Mocha Mousse body text on white without contrast testing
- Brown text on a dark background
- Brown, red, and green as the only chart distinctions
- Large brown panels behind small or thin text
- Brown hyperlinks that are difficult to distinguish from ordinary text
- Using the same shade on every slide, table, border, and heading
Accessibility and print checks
Do not assume that Mocha Mousse automatically works with white or black text. Contrast depends on the exact RGB or Hex conversion, background, font size, font weight, and viewing environment. Test every pairing with a recognized contrast checker before publication.
Pantone Connect includes accessibility-related palette checks, including simulations for common color-vision conditions and light or dark backgrounds. These checks are useful, but they do not replace testing the final Office file.

Word checklist
- Use heading styles, not color alone, to convey structure.
- Use borders, labels, and spacing for callouts and tables.
- Check small text on cream, brown, and shaded backgrounds.
- Keep links visibly distinct and do not rely on color alone.
Excel checklist
- Add data labels or direct labels to charts.
- Use markers, patterns, line styles, or explicit status text in addition to color.
- Test charts in grayscale and under color-vision simulation.
- Do not make red-versus-green the only status distinction.
PowerPoint checklist
- Review slides in presentation mode, not only in the editing canvas.
- Use a clear hierarchy of title, body, and supporting content.
- Check readability on a projector or lower-quality display when relevant.
- Test the deck after exporting or sharing it.
For print, test the actual printer and paper stock. If color matching is critical for packaging, product, or client approval, use the appropriate physical Pantone guide or a controlled CMYK specification rather than relying on the screen color.
Desktop, Mac, and web differences
The documented instructions primarily describe desktop Office workflows. Microsoft lists support across Microsoft 365 and several perpetual desktop editions, including Office 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016 for relevant Word and Excel features, but exact labels can change.
PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 on Mac and several recent Mac versions also support custom theme colors. Microsoft identifies this Mac location for custom theme-color files:
/Users/Username/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/My Themes/Theme Colors
Do not assume that Word for the web, Excel for the web, and PowerPoint for the web expose every desktop theme-management control. Create and manage the full theme in desktop PowerPoint, then open the resulting files in the web apps and test the final editing and viewing experience.
Also distinguish the Office application appearance—for example, the overall Microsoft 365 interface theme—from a document theme that controls colors, fonts, and effects inside a Word file, Excel workbook, or PowerPoint presentation.

The color does not look like Pantone’s swatch
Check the library suffix, conversion source, display profile, brightness, night mode, Office rendering, printer, and paper. Reconfirm the Pantone reference, use one approved Pantone Connect conversion, record the value in the brand guide, and test on target displays and printers. Pantone’s online swatch is explicitly a screen simulation.
The custom theme is missing in Word or Excel
- Reopen PowerPoint and check Design > Variants > Colors.
- Save the theme or presentation again.
- Close and reopen the Office applications.
- Try applying it to a new blank document or workbook.
- Confirm that you are using desktop Office rather than a web app.
- Distribute the theme or template through the organization’s approved location if multiple users need it.
Existing content does not change
Theme changes generally affect objects that use theme colors. Manually applied standard or custom colors may remain unchanged. Reapply theme colors to headings, tables, shapes, and charts, and replace hard-coded formatting with Word styles or Excel table and chart styles.
Hyperlinks are hard to see
Use a clearly contrasting hyperlink color and preserve underlining where appropriate. A hyperlink should not depend on color alone to communicate that it is clickable.

The charts look attractive but unclear
A monochromatic brown palette can make series difficult to distinguish. Mix hue, lightness, markers, line styles, direct labels, and a high-contrast accent. Then test the chart in grayscale and under color-vision simulation.
Printed pages look muddy
Lighten backgrounds, use dark charcoal text, avoid subtle shade-only distinctions, and test the actual printer and paper. For production print, coordinate with the printer using the appropriate Pantone or CMYK specification.
Theme, individual formatting, or template?
| Approach | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Full custom theme | Teams and recurring documents across Office | Requires setup and testing; hard-coded objects may not update |
| Individual formatting | A one-off slide, cell, shape, or heading | Fast, but inconsistent and difficult to revise |
| Template containing the theme | Proposals, reports, dashboards, and repeatable workflows | Needs governance and distribution |
For most businesses, the strongest approach is to create the theme first, then embed it in Word and Excel templates. Use individual formatting only when a full design system is unnecessary.
When not to use Pantone’s trend color
Do not force Mocha Mousse into a document simply because it is the Color of the Year. Use your organization’s existing brand palette when that palette has priority. A neutral or higher-contrast design may be better for dense spreadsheets, legal or instructional material, accessibility-sensitive communications, or documents intended for unreliable office printers.

Likewise, Pantone Connect or a physical swatch is unnecessary for a casual screen-only document that merely needs a warm brown. The investment becomes more worthwhile when Pantone identification, print production, client approval, palette management, or team consistency matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I enter a Pantone color directly into Microsoft Office?
Usually, the practical method is to enter a Pantone-informed RGB value through Office’s More Colors or custom theme-color controls. Office should not be assumed to contain every Pantone library natively.
What is the official Hex code for Mocha Mousse?
There is no single universal Hex value that should be presented without context. Obtain the current digital equivalent for the exact Pantone library and material reference through Pantone Connect or use your organization’s approved brand specification.
Will a custom Office theme recolor an existing document?
Only theme-linked objects are likely to respond consistently. Objects with manually applied colors may remain unchanged and need to be reformatted.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I use a Pantone swatch for a Word or PowerPoint file?
Not normally. A physical swatch is most useful for color-critical print, packaging, product, or client-approval work. Screen-only Office work generally needs a documented RGB or Hex equivalent.
The Bottom Line
The reliable Office implementation of Pantone 2025 is not a claim of exact Pantone reproduction. Identify the correct PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse reference, obtain one documented digital conversion, build a restrained theme in desktop PowerPoint, reuse it in Word and Excel templates, and test contrast, accessibility, screens, and print output before distributing the files.
