Villa Ventorum is a modern, full-scale reconstruction at The Newt in Somerset, built beside the remains of a Romano-British villa that the estate dates to AD 351. You do not walk into an untouched fourth-century building. You visit an archaeological museum over the excavated foundations, then enter a separately reconstructed villa where furnished rooms, mosaics, gardens, costumed interpretation and virtual reality make Roman life tangible.

It refers to the original villa complex and its occupation, not to the date when Villa Ventorum was constructed for visitors. That distinction is the key to understanding the attraction. The museum presents physical evidence from the estate, while Villa Ventorum turns that evidence into a full-scale experience. A mosaic or wall treatment may be grounded in what archaeologists found locally, but missing details can be interpreted using wider Roman material. Use virtual reality as a bridge
The Newt describes virtual reality as a way to imagine a day in Roman Somerset. It complements, rather than replaces, the archaeological displays: the headset supplies a reconstructed viewpoint, while the museum supplies the physical evidence on which the story is based. If you are visiting with children or anyone who finds conventional displays difficult, this is one of the clearest ways to connect an empty foundation plan with a lived environment.
What was reconstructed, and how?
Architectural Digest reported the reconstructed villa as measuring 183 by 72 feet. The design includes baths, a hypocaust underfloor-heating system, ponds and a vineyard. The 2022 feature described the rebuilt hypocaust as the only working example of its kind in the world; that is a striking claim from that report, not an independently verified current superlative. The practical value for visitors is that the system demonstrates how heated floors worked, rather than leaving the technology as a label on a diagram.
The project used Roman-inspired methods and materials including rammed-earth floors, frescoes, opus signinum and daub. Clay dug from the estate was used for wattle-and-daub walls. Project manager Katie Lewis explained the approach: “Wherever possible, traditional craftsmanship was used.” She added, “The mantra was: ‘Build it like the Romans.’” Those statements describe the construction philosophy: replicate techniques where feasible, while acknowledging that the building itself is modern.

A composite rather than a single blueprint
The reconstruction does not claim that every decorative choice can be traced to one surviving plan. Bob Croft, head of historic environment at the South West Heritage Trust, described it precisely: “It’s very much a composite of Roman Britain and the Roman Empire.” Designers used the excavated Somerset site as their anchor, then drew on evidence from places such as Pompeii and Herculaneum to interpret missing decoration and room use.

That method is normal for experimental reconstruction. A local foundation can establish dimensions or functions without preserving paint colours, furniture or every wall finish. Presenting those choices openly makes the attraction more useful: you can enjoy the visual richness while asking which elements are excavated, which are comparative and which are interpretive.
Why the interpretation is deliberately hands-on
Ric Weeks, exhibition manager at The Newt and a trained archaeologist, said: “We approached things very differently, educating people through interaction, through engagement.” The approach explains why the site feels closer to a living set than a quiet ruin. Touchpoints, demonstrations, digital tools and furnished spaces are intended to show how technologies and routines fit together.
Tom Mayberry, chief executive of the South West Heritage Trust, said in the 2022 project coverage: “Nothing this ambitious has been attempted in the UK.” That is the project team’s contemporary assessment of scale and ambition, not a measured ranking of every heritage reconstruction. The useful takeaway is that Villa Ventorum was conceived as a combined museum, working demonstration and visitor environment, rather than as a façade around a conventional gallery.

What can you eat at the Thermopolium?
The Thermopolium is the reconstructed villa’s food experience. The Newt says it serves dishes inspired by Roman history and literature, prepared with produce from the estate. “Inspired” matters: the description does not claim that every plate follows a surviving Roman recipe word for word. Expect a modern kitchen interpreting ancient ingredients, ideas and literary references in a setting designed to extend the visit.
