Icons8 can help a team find and use related icons, illustrations, photos, and other creative assets without sourcing each category separately. Its value is convenience and a style-supported visual ecosystem—not a ready-made design system, exclusive artwork, or blanket permission to redistribute files. It is most compelling when recurring search, adaptation, and handoff work costs more than a subscription; teams with strict brand, licensing, or redistribution needs should assess those limits first.
What Icons8 includes in 2026
As of August 16, 2026, Icons8 is a collection of connected asset libraries and workflow tools, not just an icon-download site. Its homepage presents icons, illustrations, stock photos, 3D models, royalty-free music, AI-generated visual assets, and AI editing tools alongside design software, plugins, APIs, and an MCP integration. The breadth is useful if your work crosses product UI and marketing, but it does not establish equal depth or a shared style across every category. Icons8’s product overview
- Asset libraries: UI icons, Ouch-style illustrations, photos, 3D models, and music.
- AI tools: generation for icons, illustrations, images, faces, and people, plus editing tools such as background removal, face swapping, and image upscaling.
- Design workflows: Lunacy desktop design software, Pichon asset-management software, and plugins including a Figma plugin.
- Developer workflows: REST APIs and an Icons8 MCP connection advertised for AI coding tools.
The Figma plugin can search and insert icons, illustrations, and photos in the design file, with style browsing and photo filters. That can reduce tab-switching, but teams still decide what belongs in a product or brand. Icons8 plugin documentation

What visual consistency it can—and cannot—provide
A coherent asset family can make it easier to match outline or filled treatments, stroke character, corner shapes, perspective, shading, and color behavior. It can also reduce the friction of finding several related concepts in one style. That is stylistic support, not a guarantee that every concept is available, semantically clear, or suited to your brand.
#1 Best Overall
Consistency has other layers that a library cannot settle for you:
- Semantic: related concepts should use understandable, comparable visual metaphors.
- Technical: dimensions, formats, export quality, and color handling need to work across platforms.
- Brand: the selected treatment must fit your typography, tone, and distinctive identity.
- Cross-medium: icons, illustrations, photos, and 3D assets need an intentional relationship rather than merely sharing a vendor.
Before scaling downloads, define an approved icon family, permitted weights and sizes, color tokens, optical-sizing rules, spacing and alignment, accessibility requirements, naming conventions, and rules for choosing icons versus illustrations or photos. Icons8 is an asset retrieval and production layer; it does not replace design-system governance, accessibility review, or brand approval.
Where it can reduce workflow overhead
Icons8 is most useful when teams repeatedly search several sites, mix incompatible icon families, rebuild routine illustrations, resize or recolor assets, or hand off inconsistent files. Centralized discovery and tool integrations can shorten those steps for prototypes, product releases, and recurring campaigns. The benefit depends on whether the assets fit your actual content and approved style.
A practical selection workflow
- Set the visual rules first. Specify the family, weight, sizes, colors, and where illustrations or photos are appropriate.
- Test coverage before committing. For a realistic domain such as finance, healthcare, education, or SaaS, list 20–30 common concepts. Check whether each exists in the chosen style, whether related assets feel coherent, and whether the style works at both UI and marketing sizes. Mark concepts that need custom replacements. This is a proposed evaluation method, not a claim that Icons8 has been tested against those samples.
- Search within the approved family. In Figma, use the Icons8 plugin to search and insert assets without leaving the file; avoid choosing a different family just because an isolated result looks appealing. Plugin documentation
- Normalize and review. Check optical size, color, spacing, alignment, legibility, and accessible contrast in the actual interface or composition.
- Record the asset and its terms. Keep its identifier or URL, style, download date, project, plan or license, and any attribution requirement in an asset register.
- Check the delivery model. A finished design or application is not the same as a template that distributes reusable source files, or a product that lets users retrieve assets. Confirm the applicable license before shipping.
Figma and Lunacy are different buying paths
Figma users can search and insert assets through the plugin; the available documentation describes that workflow but does not establish that every imported asset is editable, named consistently, or governed as an approved team collection. Plan your own naming, sizing, and review conventions rather than assuming the plugin enforces them.
Lunacy is free for personal and commercial use, with optional subscriptions for graphics, cloud storage, and team features. The graphics subscription is separate from collaboration and storage plans, and its asset access may be limited to Lunacy rather than equivalent to a general Icons8 subscription. The help-center explanation dated January 30, 2026 distinguishes graphics and AI access in Lunacy from personal cloud and team subscriptions. Lunacy subscriptions · Lunacy pricing explanation
Free use, paid access, and the licensing boundaries
Icons8’s June 29, 2026 help-center guidance says icons can be used for personal or commercial purposes, but free icon access has conditions: PNGs up to 100 × 100 pixels and a link to Icons8. The pricing page notes that free assets can also be limited by size, file type, or selection. Paid plans for the relevant category provide more formats, sizes, and choices and remove the link requirement. These terms describe icon use; do not assume they automatically apply identically to every asset category or product. Icons8 guidance on icon use · Icons pricing
Rank #3
| Use case | What to check |
|---|---|
| Icon in a finished website, app, or client design | Confirm the category’s license and plan; if using free icons, preserve the required attribution link. |
| Template, UI kit, theme, or downloadable source project | Do not assume a license to use an asset in a finished work also permits distributing the original or reusable asset file. Check the applicable license. |
| Product that lets customers search, download, or customize assets | Ordinary manual-download access is not enough; Icons8 says an API plan is required when users of a product need access to its assets. |
| Resale or standalone file redistribution | Icons8’s icon-use guidance prohibits reselling or redistributing original icon files. |
| Logo, character, or brand-specific symbol | A library download does not grant trademark rights. Icons8 says it does not own rights to logo and character icons; review the rights-holder’s policies, especially for commercial, merchandise, or packaging use. |
Free attribution can be lost during client handoff, exports, PDF conversion, or a prototype-to-production rebuild. An asset register helps preserve the relevant details. Paid access removes attribution only where the relevant paid plan says it does; it does not transfer ownership. The general pricing and license page and the applicable asset terms should be reviewed for the exact use.

The API is for integrating Icons8 content or tools into a product, not simply for a designer’s manual downloads. Icons8 states there is no free API tier. Pricing distinguishes download calls from other calls such as search or preview, with separate asset and tool categories. API documentation covers icons in SVG and JSON and links to other asset APIs. API plan guidance · API pricing · API documentation
The API terms summarized on the pricing page prohibit sublicensing or selling content in a way that lets customers extract it, distributing assets as standalone files, and caching API content. Review the full license and model both search/preview traffic and downloads before implementation. If your product gives users access to original assets, do not assume a standard graphics subscription covers that use.

The Icons8 pricing page advertises MCP access for Claude Code, Cursor, and Windsurf, with icon packs of up to 40,000 icons for AI-assisted coding projects. Treat this as a workflow integration, not an expansion of asset rights: verify what your plan includes, how code embeds or references assets, any limits, and whether production distribution is covered. “Available through MCP” does not by itself mean assets may be redistributed. Quick Recap
Where Icons8 is a poor fit
- Distinctive proprietary identity: stock assets may feel generic, and a library does not create a company-specific visual language.
- Specialist or regulated subject matter: coverage and semantic accuracy for medical, industrial, scientific, or other specialized concepts must be checked rather than presumed.
- Open licensing or lasting independence: a paid subscription is not ownership or a perpetual, irrevocable grant. Check the current license for what happens to existing projects and files after cancellation rather than inferring continuation from a pricing page.
- Redistributable source files: templates, UI kits, themes, and white-label products need careful licensing review; use in a finished deliverable is not equivalent to distributing source assets.
- Trademark-heavy work: logos, characters, and brand marks require rights review beyond finding an icon in the library.
- AI-led production: AI can accelerate exploration but does not ensure brand distinction, legal certainty, or consistent results. Check included credits and overage terms, and review outputs for likenesses or protected marks.
How it compares with alternatives
| Option | Consider it when | Trade-off versus Icons8 |
|---|---|---|
| Font Awesome | You mainly need developer-friendly web icons and prioritize an established code-oriented workflow and open licensing. | Its cited license page documents SIL OFL 1.1 for font files and MIT for code; brand icons remain subject to trademark considerations. It is less focused on a combined icons, illustrations, photos, music, and AI ecosystem. Font Awesome licensing |
| Flaticon | You prioritize a broad general-purpose icon and sticker catalog, editable formats, and downloadable variety. | The page displayed Premium at $12.99/month or $99/year, with no attribution, editable formats, and unlimited downloads; local taxes may apply. Review the license for templates and redistribution. It is less clearly positioned as an integrated cross-media design workflow. Flaticon pricing · Flaticon license |
| Streamline | You want to evaluate a dedicated commercial icon system oriented to product design. | More focused than Icons8’s broader asset platform. Streamline |
| Nucleo | You want a curated icon library and icon-management workflow. | More focused than a platform spanning photos, illustrations, AI, and music. Nucleo |
| Open-source libraries and Iconify | Your team prefers open licensing and composability, and can curate the system itself. | Teams must validate each library’s license and manage visual consistency across sources. These are not like-for-like replacements for Icons8’s broader media and workflow tools: Iconify, Phosphor, Lucide, and Google Fonts icons. |
Who should choose Icons8?
- Solo designer: start with the smallest product-specific plan that solves a real recurring need; avoid paying for graphics, AI, or collaboration you will not use.
- Startup product team: consider the icons plan if consistent UI assets and integrated search are the bottleneck; test domain coverage and team conventions first.
- Agency or marketing team: broader graphics or AI access may help with repeated campaigns, provided included asset and credit allowances match actual output needs.
- Lunacy user: consider the in-app graphics plan when Lunacy is central to the workflow, and keep graphics pricing distinct from cloud and team subscriptions.
- Developer building an asset-powered product: evaluate API terms and metered usage with Icons8 directly; consumer downloads or MCP access are not substitutes for product-use licensing.
- Enterprise or brand with strict proprietary-artwork requirements: treat Icons8 as a source for routine or exploratory assets, not the foundation of exclusive brand artwork without governance and license review.
