The 47th Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award offered $30,000 across three prizes in 2025: a $20,000 acquisitive main award, a $5,000 First Nations Print Prize and a $5,000 Young Emerging Print Prize. The exhibition ran at Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre from 16 August to 21 September 2025; it is now closed. The Centre reported a record 333 entries and selected 68 finalists.
How the $30,000 prize pool was divided
The increased 2025 prize pool was concentrated in a major acquisitive award and two specialist prizes. The main award’s winning work became part of the City of Fremantle Art Collection. The Centre describes that collection as Western Australia’s largest municipal art collection.

The First Nations prize was supported by Wesfarmers Arts, and the Young Emerging prize by Fremantle Community Bank. The Centre said the award was founded in 1976 and called the 2025 edition its 47th year. It is an acquisitive exhibition and the Centre’s longest-running exhibition series. The organiser has described it as Australia’s biggest print prize; that is the Centre’s characterization, not an independently established ranking.

Who could enter, and what counted as a print?
For the 2025 edition, entrants had to live and work in Australia and be at least 16 years old on 1 June 2025. Each artist could submit one original work, completed no earlier than 1 June 2023. A work could include multiple parts if presented as one artwork.
The terms allowed any printing process. The organiser’s examples included 3D and textile work, etching, lino and woodcut, digital and screen printing, and artist books; this was not a closed list. Only artists aged 16–25 on 1 June 2025 could compete for the Young Emerging Print Prize.

How the 2025 entry process worked
Applications were online only; emailed entries were not accepted. The deadline was 5pm AWST on Monday, 2 June 2025, and the non-refundable fee was $50 including GST. These were terms for the completed 2025 edition, not current entry details for any future award.
- Submit one original artwork through the online entry form by the deadline.
- Upload up to five JPEG images using the filename format, image dimensions and file-size limits set out in the official terms.
- Provide a biography or artist statement of up to 100 words (650 characters) and a work description of up to 150 words (975 characters).
- If selected, deliver the physical work by 5pm on 14 July 2025.
The Centre said artists would be notified of selection from 23 June. The official terms also set a 35% commission plus GST on sold works, with the Centre acting as agent for consigned works. Artists with gallery representation were responsible for resolving any additional commission arrangement with their gallery.

Finalists, judges and the exhibition
Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre reported 333 entries—the highest number in the award’s history at the time—and selected 68 finalists. Among them were 18 First Nations finalists, also a record, and five Emerging Artist finalists.
The judging panel comprised Jessyca Hutchens, Co-Director at the Berndt Museum at UWA; Hannah Matthews, Director/CEO of the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts; and Trent Walter, an exhibiting artist, printer and publisher who established Negative Press.

The exhibition opened on 15 August 2025 and ran from 16 August to 21 September, daily from 10am to 5pm. All exhibited works were offered for sale except the winning work, which entered the City collection. The official material cited here does not establish the winners’ names, so they are not included.

The 2025 increase brought the headline main prize to $20,000 while preserving two $5,000 awards for First Nations and young emerging artists. For printmakers, the call’s broad acceptance of processes—from traditional relief and etching to digital, textile and book forms—made the award open to a wide range of original print practices. The prize amounts, entry conditions and dates above apply specifically to 2025; consult the Centre’s current terms before relying on them for a later edition.
