Water drops do not all have the same shape. Tiny cloud droplets and small falling raindrops are nearly spherical; larger raindrops flatten underneath as air pushes against them, and very large ones can break apart. Dew forms on a surface, while a faucet drip is shaped by the water’s attachment to the tap and its motion. For painters, the key is to observe the drop’s size, setting and interaction with its surroundings rather than rely on the familiar pointed teardrop symbol.
How water drops form
A water drop forms when water vapor changes into liquid water through condensation. In clouds, tiny particles such as dust, salt or smoke can provide surfaces for vapor to condense on. Cloud droplets can grow as more vapor condenses and as droplets collide and combine. The USGS explains that millions of cloud droplets can contribute to a raindrop.

A cloud droplet falls when its downward fall velocity exceeds the upward motion of the surrounding air. The USGS uses a diameter of 0.5 millimeters or more as its definition of a raindrop in its explainer; that is a useful convention, not a claim that all raindrops are alike.

Why small raindrops look round
Surface tension pulls liquid water toward a compact shape, which is why a small raindrop is approximately spherical. The USGS describes drops with a radius below 1 millimeter as spherical. This is the shape to expect for small falling drops—not the pointed outline of the conventional teardrop icon.
For a painter, a sphere is a useful starting point for understanding a small drop, but its appearance on a surface depends on what it touches and how it is lit. A drop on glass, a leaf or a painted surface is not a free-falling raindrop: the surface and viewing angle affect its outline and reflections.

How falling raindrops change shape
As a raindrop grows, it falls faster and encounters greater air resistance. Air pressure against its underside deforms it while surface tension continues to pull it together. The two forces produce different shapes at different sizes.
- Small drops: Surface tension dominates, keeping the drop nearly spherical.
- Larger drops: Air resistance flattens the underside. The USGS compares the resulting shape to a hamburger bun.
- Very large drops: At radii of roughly 4 to 4.5 millimeters in the USGS account, a depression can expand rapidly, creating a parachute-like bag that becomes unstable and breaks into smaller drops.
Those size descriptions are approximate, not universal cutoffs: conditions affect a falling drop’s behavior. The important visual principle is that a large raindrop is flattened underneath, not pointed at the top like a graphic teardrop.

Raindrops, cloud droplets, dew and faucet drips

NOAA describes dew as water vapor condensed on the ground. A cloud droplet, a drop falling through air, and a drop resting on a surface may all be liquid water, but they are not interchangeable when describing shape.
Why the teardrop image is misleading
The familiar teardrop shape is a convenient symbol, not the usual form of a falling raindrop. In an article on raindrop shape, the USGS reproduces this statement by Alistair B. Fraser, Professor of Meteorology at Pennsylvania State University: “The artistic representation of raindrop as presented by popular culture is that of a teardrop. Actually, real raindrops bear scant resemblance to this popular fantasy (except after they have ceased to be raindrops by splattering on a window, say).”

That distinction matters when depicting rain: small drops are rounded, larger falling drops are flattened underneath, and a drop that has splashed onto a window or another surface is a different shape again. The teardrop icon can still communicate “rain” at a glance, but it should not be mistaken for a literal portrait.

Water evaporates from Earth’s surface, moves through the atmosphere as vapor, and cools. Condensation forms cloud droplets or dew; precipitation returns water to the surface, where runoff and infiltration carry it onward. This cycle connects the small-scale behavior of a single drop to rainfall and surface water.

The scale can be substantial: the USGS gives 27,154 gallons as the volume from one inch of rain falling on one acre. That figure applies to exactly one inch over one acre, not to an unspecified rainstorm or area.
