Sometimes, but not automatically. A household filter removes microplastics only when the exact model has a documented microplastics-reduction claim. In the United States, the practical check is the NSF product directory: find the complete model number and confirm that its listing specifically says Microplastics Reduction, generally under NSF/ANSI 401. A brand name, a generic “NSF certified” statement, or a different model in the same product family is not enough.
What a microplastics claim actually tells you
Microplastics are small plastic particles that can enter source water from consumer products, industrial activity, synthetic textiles, stormwater and the breakdown of larger plastic items. Finding particles in water does not, by itself, show that every particle is dangerous. The health question is still being studied, and the evidence differs by particle size, shape, polymer and attached chemicals.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a household device, the useful question is narrower: has an independent certifier evaluated this particular filter for a stated microplastics-reduction claim? NSF describes residential water-treatment certification in the United States as voluntary. NSF/ANSI 401 covers emerging or incidental contaminants, including microplastics for products whose listings name that claim. Certification is not a blanket statement about every contaminant or every model made by a manufacturer.
NSF’s consumer guidance puts the limitation plainly: “Remember certification to an NSF/ANSI standard or protocol does not mean that a filter, purifier or treatment system will reduce all possible contaminants.” A filter can have a certified claim for one substance and no certified claim for another.
#1 Best Overall
- Removes 20X more contaminants than a traditional pitcher. Third-party tested to filter lead, chlorine, microplastics, PFOA, PFOS, and more contaminants other filters miss.
- Keeps good minerals in. Other filters strip out minerals. Aquagear targets nasty contaminants without removing healthy minerals like calcium and magnesium.
- Last 3X longer. Each Aquagear filter lasts 120 gallons—three times longer than most standard filters.
- Filter recycling included. Never throw another water filter in the trash again. We send you a postage-paid label so you can return your filter for recycling and keep it out of the landfill.
- Filter Media Made in USA. The Aquagear filter media is made in an ISO 9000 facility.
How to check whether your filter is certified
Use the model-level record rather than relying on packaging language or a retailer’s category label. The following sequence works for a pitcher, refrigerator cartridge, faucet filter or plumbed-in system.
- Record the full model number. Look on the cartridge, housing, appliance label, box, installation sheet or performance data sheet. Include letters, numbers and suffixes; a similar-looking model may have a different certification scope.
- Open NSF’s current product directory. Search the exact model, not only the manufacturer or product family. If the directory returns several variants, select the entry that matches your number exactly.
- Read the named claim. The entry should explicitly identify Microplastics Reduction. Seeing NSF/ANSI 401 somewhere on a package without that product-level claim does not establish microplastics performance.
- Match the replacement element. Confirm the cartridge or element part number listed for that model. A replacement that fits physically but is not the listed element may not carry the same certification.
- Check operating limits. Note the rated service cycle, capacity and flow rate where they are provided. Those limits are part of using the certified product as evaluated; exceeding them can change performance.
- Verify the record’s currency. Listings can change as products are added, discontinued or recertified. Check the live entry when buying and again when replacing a cartridge.
If the exact model cannot be found, or the entry does not name microplastics reduction, treat the claim as unverified. Do not transfer a claim from a different cartridge, appliance version or regional model.
Examples of model-specific listings
NSF’s directory demonstrates that microplastics claims appear across several household formats. These examples show how specific the records are; they are not a ranking, endorsement or guarantee of current retail stock.
| Format and listing | Model or element identified | Published service detail | What the record demonstrates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pour-through filter, Mitsubishi Chemical Cleansui | AJP407-D with ACPC5-D replacement; EJ103 with EJC1 replacement | Service cycles listed as 26.42 gallons for AJP407-D and 52.83 gallons for EJ103 | The claim belongs to each named model and its specified replacement element. |
| Plumbed-in system, Microfilter Co. | DH-S1 with DH-R1 replacement element, among other listed models | The directory provides model-specific flow and service-cycle information; the retrieved entry does not establish one common value for all models. | Installation type does not determine certification; each model has its own record. |
| Residential cartridges, Everpure | H-300 and H-54, with H-300 and H-54 elements identified | Use the service information shown for the exact listing. | A cartridge line can contain more than one certified model, with separate entries. |
| Refrigerator and related systems, Brita Total360 | Models using BRFWPF replacement filters | Follow the capacity and replacement information attached to the specific listing. | A replacement part number is not interchangeable evidence for every refrigerator or housing. |
| Refrigerator filter, Whirlpool | EDR1RXD1B | Listed service cycle: 200 gallons | One refrigerator cartridge has a named microplastics claim; other refrigerator models require separate checks. |
The Cleansui search result was current October 13, 2026. Other retrieved NSF entries showed dates from September 10 through October 12, 2026. Those dates illustrate why a directory result should be rechecked at publication or purchase time rather than treated as permanent.
Choose the format that fits your installation
Pour-through pitchers
These are simple to install and useful when you need filtered water at one tap. Their practical constraint is a finite cartridge cycle. For example, the two Cleansui entries above list different rated cycles, so “the same brand” does not tell you how often an element must be changed. Measure how much your household actually pours and use the shorter applicable limit when planning replacements.

Refrigerator cartridges
A refrigerator filter must match the appliance’s filter bay and part number. The Whirlpool EDR1RXD1B entry illustrates the level of detail to look for: a specific model and a listed 200-gallon service cycle. Do not assume that another cartridge with a similar shape, or another refrigerator model from the same manufacturer, has the same claim.
Faucet and plumbed-in systems
These can supply more water without filling a pitcher, but compatibility and installation matter. Check connection type, available space, pressure and the exact replacement element. The Microfilter Co. listings show why the directory must be read model by model: flow and service-cycle details are attached to individual systems, not to the category as a whole.
Whole-home treatment
A whole-home unit may be selected for broader water-treatment goals, but the presence of a general filtration statement does not establish a microplastics claim. Verify that the exact system and replacement media appear in the directory with Microplastics Reduction named. Also decide whether your concern is drinking water, bathing water or both; a point-of-use device may address only the tap where it is installed.
What capacity, flow and replacement data mean
A service cycle is the amount of water the certifier associates with the evaluated element before replacement. It is not a universal life expectancy for every household. Sediment load, source-water quality, pressure and usage patterns can make a cartridge clog sooner, while running past the rated cycle can reduce the assurance provided by the listing.
Flow rate matters for plumbed-in devices because a filter evaluated at one flow may not have been evaluated at a higher one. If a product sheet gives a maximum or rated flow, keep the installation within that limit. Capacity and flow are operating specifications, not comparative removal percentages.

Replacement compatibility is equally important. The certified claim follows the listed product configuration. A third-party element, an unapproved refill or a cartridge with a different suffix may fit but fall outside the evaluated configuration. Keep the model number and element number together in your maintenance records.
What certification does not prove
- It does not prove removal of every contaminant. NSF’s warning applies even when a product is certified to a recognized standard.
- It does not provide a universal percentage for all filters. The available listings do not supply comparable household-filter removal percentages under one common test protocol, so they cannot support a fair performance ranking.
- It does not confirm current retail availability. A directory entry can exist even when a particular store has no stock or a manufacturer has changed distribution.
- It does not confirm fit for your appliance. Refrigerator model, housing, thread size and cartridge revision still have to be matched.
- It does not cover unrelated claims automatically. If you also care about chlorine taste, lead, cysts, pharmaceuticals or another contaminant, verify that claim separately.
Because no common percentage comparison is established, avoid choosing a model by an advertised-sounding number that is not tied to the exact certified listing and test conditions.
Microplastics in municipal water: a different question
Household certification and public-water treatment answer different questions. The World Health Organization’s assessment of drinking-water microplastics reports that conventional treatment can remove a high proportion of particles. Its information sheet advises water suppliers to optimize treatment for particle removal and microbial safety, which can incidentally improve microplastic removal.
Those findings describe treatment processes and drinking-water systems generally; they are not a performance test of a named pitcher, refrigerator cartridge or under-sink unit. You cannot convert the WHO statement into a promised percentage for your home filter.

WHO also characterized the health concern from chemicals associated with microplastics as low in the evidence it assessed, while calling for better studies of occurrence, exposure, uptake and health effects. “Harmful” should therefore not be read as proof that every detected particle presents a demonstrated health hazard. The risk assessment remains an active scientific subject, and a filter claim should be evaluated on its own technical terms.

Common verification mistakes and fixes
Searching only by brand
Symptom: You find a manufacturer page that says the company offers certified products, but your cartridge number is absent.
Fix: Search the complete model and confirm the directory entry’s named claim. Certification can differ within one product range.
Confusing a standard with a claim
Symptom: The package displays “NSF/ANSI 401,” but the listing does not say microplastics reduction.
Fix: Treat the product as unverified for microplastics until the exact listing names that reduction claim. A standard number alone is not a blanket guarantee.
Using an unlisted replacement
Symptom: A cheaper cartridge fits the housing, but its part number differs from the certified entry.

- Independently Tested and Fully Transparent: Independently tested by a third-party lab and NSF certified to NSF/ANSI 43 and 372. Removal rates for fluoride, lead, chlorine, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, PFAS, phthalates, microplastics, and VOCs are all publicly available, making this the top-rated choice for health-conscious parents, wellness-focused adults, and anyone with tap water quality concerns
Fix: Use the element identified in the listing or obtain written compatibility information from the manufacturer. Physical fit is not proof of equivalent certification.
Ignoring the service limit
Symptom: Water flow slows, taste changes or the cartridge has exceeded its rated cycle.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix: Replace the element according to the listed cycle and the product’s instructions. If clogging occurs early, investigate sediment and source-water conditions rather than extending the interval.
Assuming a listing is permanent
Symptom: An old purchase page and the current directory show different model information.
Fix: Recheck the live NSF record at the time of purchase and retain a copy of the model and element numbers you verified.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you have the complete model number, including suffixes?
- Does the current NSF entry name Microplastics Reduction?
- Is the listed replacement element the one you can obtain for your system?
- Does your appliance, faucet or plumbing connection match the certified configuration?
- Have you recorded the rated capacity, service cycle and flow limit?
- Are your other contaminant concerns covered by separate, named claims?
- Are you relying on a current listing rather than an undated retailer description?
If any answer is no, you have an information or compatibility gap to resolve before treating the filter as certified for microplastics reduction.
Bottom line for households
A water filter may reduce microplastics, but the answer belongs to the exact product model, replacement element and operating limits—not to the brand name or the word “certified.” Use NSF’s current directory to verify the model-level Microplastics Reduction claim, maintain the element within its rated cycle and check other contaminant claims separately. Public-water treatment evidence from WHO provides useful context, but it cannot substitute for certification data on your particular household device.
