Graphic design communicates ideas, identities, and information visually across print and digital media. Web design applies that visual communication to an interactive website or interface, adding navigation, responsive behavior, usability, accessibility, and technical implementation constraints. The fields share typography, color, layout, and branding skills, but they solve different problems. Choose a graphic designer for visual identity and communication assets, a web designer for an interactive digital experience, and both when a project needs a strong brand and a functional website.

The short answer

A graphic designer creates visual communication: a logo, package, poster, report, advertisement, illustration, or static digital asset. A web designer creates the visual structure and experience of a website or web interface, including pages, navigation, interaction states, responsive layouts, and user flows.

The distinction is not simply “print versus digital.” Graphic design also includes social posts, email graphics, digital advertising, and online publications. Web design is different because the work must operate as a flexible, interactive system that changes across devices, browsers, content, and user needs.

These role boundaries are industry conventions rather than universal legal definitions. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics describes graphic designers as creating visual concepts to communicate ideas, while its digital-design description includes website or interface layout, functions, navigation, usability, and compatibility (BLS graphic designers; BLS web developers and digital designers).

What is graphic design?

Graphic design is the planning and creation of visual communication intended to inform, persuade, identify, organize, or entertain. A graphic designer may work by hand or with software, turning a message and audience need into a deliberate composition.

Typical graphic-design work

  • Brand identities, logos, stationery, and brand guidelines
  • Packaging, labels, and point-of-sale materials
  • Posters, signage, brochures, reports, and presentations
  • Books, magazines, and editorial layouts
  • Advertising campaigns and marketing collateral
  • Illustrations, infographics, and diagrams
  • Social-media graphics, email graphics, and digital advertisements

The finished output is often a defined visual artifact: a print-ready PDF, a logo file, an illustration, or a set of platform-sized images. It can still be revised later, but its dimensions and presentation are usually known when it is produced.

What is web design?

Web design combines visual design with user-experience and interface decisions to help people understand, navigate, and complete tasks on a website or web-based product. Figma describes the discipline as balancing form and function through UX, UI, and visual design (Figma’s web-design overview).

Typical web-design responsibilities

  • Content organization, information architecture, and sitemaps
  • Wireframes, page layouts, and high-fidelity screen designs
  • Navigation, menus, buttons, forms, cards, and other interface components
  • User flows, interaction states, and clickable prototypes
  • Responsive layouts for phones, tablets, laptops, and large screens
  • Screen typography, contrast, content hierarchy, and calls to action
  • Usability and accessibility review
  • Design-system components and developer handoff

A web designer may work in a content-management system or write front-end code, but “web designer” does not automatically mean “web developer.” Responsibilities vary by employer and project.

Web design vs graphic design: key differences

Category Graphic design Web design
Primary purpose Communicate an idea, message, or identity visually Help users understand, navigate, and interact with a digital environment
Typical outputs Logos, packaging, posters, brochures, advertisements, illustrations, and static digital graphics Web pages, landing pages, wireframes, prototypes, design systems, and interface screens
Medium Print, packaging, signage, publications, advertising, and static digital media Websites, web apps, and responsive digital products
Interaction Usually limited or absent Central: navigation, controls, forms, states, feedback, and flows
Dimensions Often fixed and specified in advance Must adapt to viewport size, orientation, browser, zoom, and input method
Technical constraints Bleed, trim, resolution, color reproduction, paper, ink, materials, and finishing HTML/CSS behavior, browser compatibility, performance, dynamic content, accessibility, and maintenance
Success measures Clarity, visual impact, brand consistency, reproduction quality, and audience response Usability, task completion, navigation, accessibility, performance, conversion, and visual quality
Common software Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Affinity apps, Canva, and illustration or layout tools Figma, Sketch, prototyping tools, design systems, and browser inspection or collaboration tools
Coding Usually not required Helpful or required in some roles, but not universal

This is a practical comparison, not a rigid taxonomy. Many professionals work across both disciplines.

How the constraints change on the web

Graphic-design constraints

  • Fixed size, viewing distance, bleed, trim, and production tolerances
  • Resolution and color mode, including CMYK or RGB requirements
  • Paper, substrate, ink, finishing method, and vendor specifications
  • Digital-platform dimensions, file size, and screen legibility for online graphics

Web-design constraints

  • Flexible grids, changing content, and multiple screen sizes
  • Touch, mouse, keyboard, screen-reader, and zoom interaction
  • Loading speed, browser differences, and implementation limits
  • Text resizing, localization, dynamic data, and ongoing maintenance
  • Accessible structure, labels, focus states, contrast, and error handling

A poster can be judged as one composition. A website must also work as a repeatable system. Responsive design may involve reflowing columns, changing navigation, scaling imagery, adjusting type, and prioritizing content on smaller screens. The designer may specify these behaviors while a front-end developer implements them.

Why usability and accessibility are core web-design concerns

An attractive page is not successful if users cannot find information, understand controls, submit a form, or access content with assistive technology. Common considerations include:

  • Compatibility with screen readers and other assistive technologies

W3C treats accessibility and usability as overlapping but distinct concerns and recommends attention to the experiences of people with disabilities, including testing with real users where possible (W3C accessibility, usability, and inclusion; W3C guidance for designers).

Legal obligations depend on jurisdiction, organization, sector, and applicable law. The U.S. Department of Justice says ADA nondiscrimination and effective-communication principles apply to web accessibility, but it has not established one detailed technical regulation for every private-sector website. WCAG and Section 508 can provide technical guidance; neither should be presented as an automatic universal legal safe harbor (U.S. DOJ web-accessibility guidance).

Where the disciplines overlap

  • Typography, color theory, composition, grids, balance, and visual hierarchy
  • Branding, image selection, editing, and art direction
  • Audience analysis, presentations, critique, feedback, and revision
  • Client, stakeholder, writer, marketer, and developer collaboration
  • Shared tools such as Adobe applications, Figma, Affinity, and Canva

Software does not determine specialization. The same application can be used by a brand designer, UI designer, marketer, or developer. Evaluate the outcomes and portfolio, not a tool list.

How the workflows differ

Typical graphic-design workflow

  1. Clarify the brief, audience, message, and required formats.
  2. Research the context and explore concepts through sketches or references.
  3. Develop typography, imagery, color, and composition.
  4. Review, revise, and prepare production files.
  5. Check prepress or platform specifications and export final assets.
  6. Deliver organized files, guidelines, and reusable templates where needed.

Typical web-design workflow

  1. Define business goals, user needs, content, and success measures.
  2. Inventory content and map the information architecture or sitemap.
  3. Create wireframes and plan navigation, user flows, and key states.
  4. Plan responsive behavior, accessibility requirements, and component reuse.
  5. Develop visual designs for relevant breakpoints and states.
  6. Build a prototype and review usability, content hierarchy, and calls to action.
  7. Hand off specifications or implement in a CMS or front-end codebase.
  8. Test across browsers, devices, keyboard input, zoom, and assistive technology.
  9. Launch, monitor real-world behavior, and iterate as content and technology change.

Web design therefore often continues after launch. Content changes, new devices, browser updates, analytics, accessibility findings, and performance issues can all require design decisions.

Do web designers need coding skills?

Not always, but technical literacy is increasingly valuable. Titles vary:

  • Visual web designer: focuses on layout, type, color, imagery, and composition.
  • UI designer: focuses on interface components and visual interaction patterns.
  • UX designer: focuses on user needs, structure, flows, research, usability, and testing.
  • Web designer–developer hybrid: designs and implements pages with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, CMS platforms, or visual builders.
  • Front-end developer: implements designs in code and owns browser behavior, functionality, and performance.

Adobe distinguishes web design from front-end and back-end development, while BLS notes that organizations may combine or separate design and development duties (Adobe web-design career guidance; BLS digital-design and development roles). Ask exactly who will implement, test, maintain, and optimize the site.

Can a graphic designer become a web designer?

Yes. Graphic designers already bring layout, typography, color, branding, composition, and image skills. The transition requires adding:

  • User-experience fundamentals and information architecture
  • Wireframing, prototyping, interaction states, and user flows
  • Responsive behavior and content hierarchy
  • Accessibility principles and testing methods
  • Design systems and reusable components
  • Basic HTML and CSS literacy, depending on the target role
  • Developer handoff and testing on real devices

A print composition cannot simply be placed on a webpage. Web work must accommodate scrolling, variable text, interaction, changing content, and multiple devices.

Can a web designer do graphic design?

Often, but title alone is not proof of specialist depth. A web designer may be well equipped for website graphics, digital banners, UI icons, social assets, simple illustrations, and presentation visuals. A graphic-design specialist is usually the safer choice for brand identity systems, packaging, editorial publications, complex illustration, art direction, print production, and large-format signage. Review relevant portfolio work and production experience.

Which professional should you hire?

Project need Best starting point Additional help to consider
Logo or complete brand identity Graphic or brand-identity designer Web designer for digital applications
Packaging, brochures, reports, posters, or signage Graphic designer with print-production experience Printer, illustrator, or photographer as needed
Website redesign or landing page Web, UI, or UX designer Developer, copywriter, SEO, or accessibility specialist
E-commerce or conversion-focused site Web/UX designer experienced with mobile flows and forms Developer, analytics, payments, performance, and content specialists
Digital product or web application Product, UX, or UI designer Engineers, researchers, content designer, and accessibility expertise
Small-business site Capable generalist who can cover brand basics, CMS, responsive design, and accessibility Specialists where the project has unusual brand, UX, or technical risk
Brand and website developed together Coordinated graphic/brand and web team Developer and content team for implementation and launch

Hire a developer as well when the project includes accounts, payments, databases, integrations, custom functionality, security, scalability, or substantial performance requirements. A platform such as Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, Shopify, or WordPress.com supplies publishing infrastructure; it does not automatically create strong information architecture, accessible interaction, or distinctive branding.

Questions to ask before signing

  • Can you show comparable work for this medium and audience?
  • Does the scope include strategy, content, copy, imagery, development, testing, accessibility review, hosting, maintenance, and revisions?
  • Who owns source files, domains, hosting, CMS accounts, and design-system assets?
  • Who implements responsive behavior and fixes post-launch issues?
  • How will keyboard access, zoom, contrast, labels, and assistive-technology use be reviewed?

Web designer vs graphic designer as a career

If you most enjoy… Likely fit Skills to build
Identity, campaigns, illustration, print, packaging, or editorial composition Graphic design Brand systems, art direction, prepress, production, and visual storytelling
Interfaces, user journeys, content structure, testing, and iterative digital work Web, UI, UX, or product design Information architecture, responsive systems, accessibility, prototyping, and developer collaboration
Designing and implementing interactive pages Web designer–developer hybrid HTML, CSS, JavaScript or CMS skills, browser testing, performance, and deployment

Job titles are inconsistent across companies. Portfolio evidence and stated responsibilities matter more than labels. Formal education may be preferred in some roles, but requirements vary; practical skills and a relevant portfolio are central in many hiring decisions. U.S. employment and wage comparisons should use clearly labeled, current BLS occupation data rather than assuming that one discipline universally pays more (BLS graphic-design occupation; BLS web and digital-design occupation).

Final verdict

Graphic design is the broader discipline of visual communication. Web design is a specialized digital application that must make visual communication usable, interactive, responsive, accessible, and maintainable. Neither is universally better: match the professional to the outcome. Use graphic design for identity and communication assets, web design for an interactive website or interface, and a coordinated team when the project requires both.
