AI-generated images can look convincing until a detail gives the game away: six fingers, two suns, or a second panda where the prompt asked for one. These documented examples are funny as glitches, but they are selected cases—not proof that every image generator makes the same mistakes or how often it does.
Here are several recognizable kinds of AI image failure, what the research examples show, and why some inaccurate images deserve more care than a laugh.
A panda prompt gets an unexpected passenger
In a June 2024 example, Google Research described asking for an image of a panda riding a motorcycle. The generated result included two pandas, along with distorted panda noses and wheel spokes. It is a compact illustration of several possible mismatches at once: an extra subject, distorted details, and a scene that does not cleanly follow the request.

That example illustrates what can go wrong; it does not establish how common the error is. It comes from a research article, not a controlled comparison of current products.
Six fingers, two suns, and other oddities
A 2025 university research release offered examples that included a hand with six fingers and an image with two suns. The work was presented as work-in-progress at ACM CHI, so these examples should be read as illustrations of perceived mistakes, not as a representative measure of image-generator performance.

Extra or missing anatomy is only one kind of failure. A 2025 mixed-methods study discusses a wider range of perceived problems, including semantic and logic errors, style artifacts, geometry, physical violations, distortions, and text or anatomy issues.

Why AI-generated art can look weird
“Weird” is not one specific technical failure. The documented examples and research categories point to different visible problems: wrong counts, distorted details, anatomy issues, geometry, physical plausibility, and misunderstandings of meaning or logic. The sources do not establish one universal cause for all of them.

A persuasive overall image can also hide a local contradiction. A viewer may notice the composition or mood first, then catch the detail that does not belong. Looking closely is useful, but a handful of striking examples cannot tell us how frequently a particular mistake occurs across models.
When an inaccurate image is more than a joke
Some failures are harmless oddities; others can mislead or offend. Reporting on image-generator bias describes stereotyped outputs, and Google’s historical image-generation controversy involved inaccurate depictions. Those cases call for care: do not make affected people or communities the punchline, and do not present an inaccurate historical image as reliable representation.

The distinction matters. A distorted wheel spoke can be a comic detail. A stereotype or false depiction of a historical subject can reinforce a harmful idea or misinform a viewer.
How to look at an AI image critically
- Check the subject and count. Is the requested person or object present, and are there unexpected duplicates?
- Inspect the details. Look at hands, faces, text, wheels, and other small features that matter to the scene.
- Trace the relationships. Ask whether objects and people are interacting in the way the prompt describes.
- Consider the context. If the image depicts real communities or history, check whether it could mislead or rely on a stereotype.
- Keep the evidence in proportion. Treat a sourced example as an example, not a measurement of how often a model fails.

Why does AI art give people extra fingers?
Extra fingers are one documented example of an anatomy error. The sources describe visible failure categories, but they do not establish one universal cause for every such image or show how often all current generators produce it.

What are the most common AI image mistakes?
The available research discusses perceived problems including anatomy, text, distortion, geometry, physical violations, style artifacts, and semantic or logic errors. The dossier does not provide a representative failure-rate ranking, so it would be misleading to call any one type the most common.
Do these examples show that all current image generators make the same mistakes?
