The practical decision is less about whether the Dalton feels soft—it does, according to both the retailer’s cushion design and Ukiomogbe’s hands-on experience—and more about whether your room, delivery route and household suit a very large, low sectional. It is offered in two widths and either chaise orientation, with loose reversible cushions, zip-off covers and a feather-blend wrap over foam. The following review separates West Elm’s current specifications from one reviewer’s experience so you can judge comfort, fit, maintenance and value without treating a single owner report as a durability study.

West Elm’s U.S. listing identifies the collection as Contract Grade and says it is made in Mexico. Those are retailer descriptions, not independent certifications or a test of commercial performance in every environment. The retailer also lists white-glove delivery: the service brings the sectional into the room, assembles it and removes the packaging. Confirm that service, delivery timing and stock for your exact configuration when ordering.

The ten-inch width difference is meaningful in a floor plan. The longer model gives you roughly ten additional inches of sofa seat span, but it also demands that much more uninterrupted wall or open-room width. Neither size becomes narrower in depth, so choosing the 111-inch model does not solve a walkway problem caused by the chaise projecting into the room.
Is the Dalton comfortable?
Soft, sink-in cushioning
West Elm describes the Dalton’s seat cushions as high-resiliency polyurethane foam cores wrapped in a blend of 70 percent feather and 30 percent poly fiber. The retailer’s firmness scale places the sectional at medium, or 3 out of 5. That rating is a general product classification, not a promise that every person will perceive the same support.
Ukiomogbe’s hands-on description is softer than the numeric rating suggests. In her September 29, 2022 Architectural Digest review, she reported a very plush feel and wrote, “Comfortable is an understatement.” Her experience points to a cushion that compresses around the body rather than holding you high and rigid. People who like a tailored, firm sit may find that sensation too relaxed; people who want to curl up or lie across a chaise are more likely to appreciate it.

Posture and seat depth
The sofa seat depth is generous enough for lounging but can feel excessive if you sit with your feet planted and your back against the cushions. A deeper seat often works best when you use a throw pillow behind your lower back. The chaise is substantially deeper than the sofa seat, making it the natural place to recline with legs extended. Because the sectional is low, your knees may sit higher than your hips depending on your height and how far you settle into the cushion.
What the comfort evidence can and cannot prove
The retailer’s medium rating describes the intended construction; Ukiomogbe’s account describes one person’s actual sit. Neither establishes a universal comfort score. Body proportions, cushion break-in, fabric choice and whether you sit upright or recline will change the experience. If possible, use a showroom visit or fabric and cushion samples to assess the hand feel before committing to a made-to-order combination.
Does the Dalton sag?
Ukiomogbe observed temporary sagging while using her sectional: the cushions and seating surface compressed during sitting, then returned to their usual proportions a few minutes after she stood up. That is an individual observation of normal use, not evidence that every Dalton will behave identically or that long-term structural sagging has been measured.
Her one-year update provides a second time point but not a controlled durability test. She said the sofa still felt sturdy and that the material remained intact. She also continued to describe the low height as a practical issue. No published owner survey or product-specific laboratory statistic establishes a failure rate, expected cushion life or a guaranteed period before permanent softening. Treat the Dalton’s plush compression as part of its design and maintain the cushions as West Elm directs rather than assuming the review proves lifetime durability.
Is the low profile practical?
The listed seat height is 18.5 inches, which places the Dalton lower than many conventional sofas. Ukiomogbe specifically noted that older family members found rising from the seat difficult during visits. That does not make the sectional unsuitable for every older adult, but it is a meaningful accessibility check for anyone with knee, hip or balance limitations.

Before ordering, compare the listed seat height with a chair or sofa in your home that feels easy to enter and leave. Consider who will use the sectional most often, whether guests need a firm edge to push against, and whether a coffee table will force people to twist or lean forward when standing. A low frame can look visually light and feel relaxed, yet still be inconvenient in a household that values easy transfers.

Will it fit your room and delivery route?
Measure in three stages: the final room, the path into the room and the temporary space needed for assembly. Include baseboards, radiator covers, stair landings, elevator interiors, door swing and tight turns. The chaise projects 69 inches into the room in either width, so map that depth with painter’s tape before buying. Also mark the sofa width and leave the circulation lanes you need around it; a sectional can technically fit while making the room hard to use.
Account for the listed shipping weight—207 pounds for the shorter configuration or 229 pounds for the longer one—when checking stairs, flooring and the number of people available if a delivery exception occurs. West Elm says its white-glove service brings the pieces inside, assembles them and removes packaging, but the service does not eliminate the need to verify that the crew can reach the intended room. Ask what happens if an entry measurement fails and whether your address has any service restrictions.
Choosing left or right chaise
“Left” and “right” describe the chaise when you face the sectional from the front. Choose the side that keeps the chaise out of your primary walkway and aligns with the room’s longest open dimension. In a room with a television or focal wall, the chaise side can determine whether someone reclining blocks the sightline or the route to a door.
Sketch the sectional as two rectangles—one for the sofa and one for the chaise—then draw doors, windows, outlets and heating vents. Check the view from the entrance as well as the seated view. A left-chaise model is not inherently better than a right-chaise model; the correct choice is the one that matches your architecture. Confirm the side on the order summary because changing orientation after production may be difficult or impossible.

Materials, support and serviceable features
West Elm lists a frame made from solid and engineered wood, with kiln-dried wood components. The support system combines sinuous springs and webbing, while the legs are ash. The seat cushions are loose and reversible, and the covers zip off for removal. The retailer also says the legs are removable, a useful detail for navigating narrow doorways or replacing a leg, although you should not remove hardware without following the supplied instructions.
Loose, reversible cushions let you rotate positions and redistribute wear, but they also require more day-to-day straightening than a fully attached seat. A feather-and-poly-fiber wrap can develop a relaxed, rumpled appearance as it is used. That look is not automatically a defect; it is consistent with a soft cushion system. If you prefer a tightly tailored silhouette that stays perfectly aligned, the Dalton’s construction may demand more maintenance than you want.
How to clean and maintain it
West Elm’s care guidance is deliberately simple and should take priority over improvised chemical treatments. For a spill, blot promptly with a clean, colorfast towel. Spot clean with a damp cloth or sponge, then allow the area to air dry. If a stain remains, West Elm advises professional cleaning. Do not substitute a strong solvent, bleach or an unapproved upholstery product when the retailer has not specified it for your fabric.

Maintenance can reduce uneven wear and keep the sectional looking intentional, but it cannot turn a plush, low sofa into a firm, high one. Set expectations around the design you are buying.

At this price level, value depends on fit and use more than on a single comfort adjective. The sectional gives you a very large lounging surface, a reversible cushion system, removable legs and a retailer-described wood-and-spring foundation. It asks you to accept a low seat, a relaxed appearance and regular fluffing. Fabric and color deserve the same attention as the frame.
