A finished bathroom vanity is a coordinated, working assembly—not merely a cabinet. The cabinet must be level and anchored, the countertop and basin must sit correctly, the faucet must suit the sink, the wall joint must be sealed, and the supply and drain connections must remain dry when the water is restored. Because construction and fittings vary, use the product instructions for the specific vanity as the controlling sequence. The Home Depot installation guide puts it plainly: “Always follow the manufacturer’s directions for how to install a bathroom vanity.”

What counts as a finished bathroom vanity?
In practical terms, a vanity is finished when its visible parts work together and its hidden connections have been checked. A typical assembly can include:
- the vanity cabinet or base, including doors, drawers and hardware;
- a countertop or vanity top;
- a basin, whether supplied as an integrated sink, drop-in sink or another compatible type;
- a faucet and its supply connections;
- the joint where the top meets the wall, sometimes finished with a backsplash or sealant; and
- the drain assembly, P-trap and water-supply connections.
Not every package contains every part, and the order of assembly differs between products. A top may arrive attached to the basin, a sink may need clips, and a faucet may be installed before or after the top is set. Confirm what is in the box and read the cabinet, top, sink and faucet instructions before committing to a sequence.

Start with the cabinet: level, supported and fixed in place
Measure the real installation space
Check the available width, depth and height, then compare those measurements with the vanity, countertop overhang and any trim. Confirm that doors and drawers can open without striking a wall, toilet or shower enclosure. Measure the locations of the existing hot- and cold-water lines and the drain, not just the room’s overall width. A cabinet that fits the wall but places its openings away from the plumbing can require alterations that were not part of the original plan.
Locate suitable wall support
The Home Depot’s general sequence is to locate studs, position the cabinet, level it, shim where needed and attach it to the wall. Use the fastening method specified for the cabinet construction and the wall behind it; a method suitable for a framed wall may not be suitable for masonry or a different cabinet rail. Do not rely on the countertop, plumbing or a bead of caulk to hold the cabinet in position.

Check the finished cabinet before covering it
- Place a level across the front-to-back and side-to-side surfaces.
- Make sure shims are stable and do not leave a rocking base.
- Confirm that the cabinet is anchored at the points required by its instructions.
- Open every door and drawer to check for binding after the cabinet is fastened.
- Look behind the cabinet for crushed, sharply bent or inaccessible supply and drain lines.
A level cabinet is more than a visual preference: it gives the countertop and basin a reliable plane and prevents doors, drawers and water from behaving unpredictably.
Fit the countertop, basin and wall joint as one system
Dry-fit before applying sealant
Set the countertop in position without adhesive or silicone first. Check that its edges align with the cabinet, that the basin opening is correctly oriented, and that the rear edge meets the wall as intended. If the top is supplied with a separate basin, verify that the basin, clips and faucet holes match before making the installation permanent.
Seal the cabinet-to-top connection
RONA’s installation guidance describes applying caulk to the cabinet top before placing the countertop. Use only the sealant and preparation method permitted by the countertop and cabinet instructions. Set the top carefully rather than sliding it through wet sealant, then remove excess material in the manner recommended for that product.
Finish the top-to-wall joint
Apply silicone between the countertop and wall after the top is seated and aligned. This joint should be continuous, neat and compatible with both surfaces. A backsplash may cover or form part of this transition, but it does not eliminate the need to follow the vanity and sealant instructions. Do not treat a large, irregular gap as a caulking problem; a substrate or fit issue should be corrected before sealing.

Install or secure the basin and faucet
Attach sink clips or other retainers where the design calls for them. Install the faucet with its gasket and mounting hardware in the specified order, and make sure the spout reaches the basin without striking the rim or directing water onto the countertop. Tighten connections firmly without forcing them; overtightening can damage a fitting or its sealing washer. If the faucet requires drilling or a hole configuration that the top does not have, stop and resolve that compatibility question before proceeding.
Reconnect the plumbing and perform the leak test
General guides from The Home Depot and RONA describe a similar final plumbing check, but the exact fittings and order depend on the product. Keep the instructions for the faucet, drain and trap at hand.
- Connect the supply lines. Attach the hot and cold lines to the correct shutoff valves and faucet inlets. Keep the lines free of twists and avoid loading the valve by pulling the pipe sideways.
- Install the drain assembly. Fit the drain, gasket and retaining hardware in the order specified for the basin. Confirm that the drain flange and washer sit evenly.
- Reconnect the P-trap. Align the trap with the wall or floor outlet without forcing the joints. Adjust the tubular sections only within the range allowed by their instructions.
- Restore water slowly. Open the shutoff valves gradually while watching every new connection.
- Run and drain the basin. Operate the faucet, fill the basin enough to exercise the drain and then release the water. Check both the pressurized supply side and the gravity-fed drain side.
- Dry and recheck. Wipe the joints dry, wait, and inspect again. A dry paper towel around each connection can reveal a small seep that is difficult to see.
If a joint leaks, close the relevant shutoff valve before disassembling anything. Check that the washer is present, seated and undamaged; do not simply add tape or sealant where the fitting is designed to seal with a gasket. Persistent leaks, inaccessible shutoffs or damaged pipework are reasons to use a qualified plumber.
A practical final-inspection checklist
Walk around the completed vanity in good light and inspect it as a working feature:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Area | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cabinet | Level, stable, anchored and free of movement | Supports the top and keeps doors and drawers aligned |
| Countertop | Fully supported, aligned with the cabinet and free of visible rocking | Prevents stress on the basin and sealant joints |
| Basin | Correctly seated, clipped or fastened, with no movement | Limits water entry and protects the top |
| Faucet | Secure, correctly oriented and compatible with the basin holes | Prevents movement and unwanted splashing |
| Wall joint | Continuous seal or correctly fitted backsplash, without open gaps | Reduces water entry behind the vanity |
| Plumbing | Supply valves, drain and P-trap dry after use | Finds leaks before they damage the cabinet or wall |
| Storage | Doors and drawers open fully without striking nearby fixtures | Confirms the room remains usable |
A photograph or walk-through should show the top sitting level and flush, the wall joint finished, the relationship between faucet, basin and mirror, and any exposed edge that still needs trim or sealing. These are inspection prompts; they are not evidence that a particular bathroom has been seen or measured.
Coordinate the visible finishing decisions
Mirror placement
Position the mirror only after the vanity top and faucet heights are established. Check that the mirror is visually centered on the basin or the room’s intended axis, while leaving practical clearance for the faucet and any wall lighting. The final choice depends on the room, users and electrical layout rather than on a universal dimension.

Decorative and task lighting
Lighting affects how the finished vanity is used and how easily defects are spotted. Place fixtures so they illuminate the face and basin without creating glare in the mirror. Electrical work, box placement and wet-location requirements should be handled according to local rules by an appropriately qualified professional; do not move plumbing or electrical services merely to force a decorative arrangement.
Faucet and accessory coordination
Choose a faucet whose hole pattern, reach and mounting method match the basin and top. Towel bars, soap dispensers and other accessories should not interfere with drawers, backsplash joints or service shutoffs. A coordinated appearance comes from compatible dimensions and finishes, not from assuming that parts sold separately will fit together.
Choose a vanity by fit and installation scope
When comparing a bathroom vanity with sink, use practical compatibility rather than an unsupported “best” ranking. Ask these questions before purchase:
- Does the cabinet’s width and depth fit the wall, door swing and circulation path?
- Do the drain and supply locations line up, or is authorized modification possible?
- Are the sink, faucet holes and countertop material compatible?
- How much usable storage remains after the P-trap and shutoff valves are connected?
- What cleaning products and ventilation conditions does the surface require?
- Does the installation service include the faucet, countertop modification, removal and disposal?
Service descriptions are not interchangeable. KOHLER’s published standard bathroom-sink service, for example, covers standard installation of parts included in the box and removal of the old product, but excludes installing a new faucet, relocating existing fixtures, and drilling or cutting an existing countertop. Availability is checked by ZIP code. Those are that provider’s terms, not a definition of every installer’s scope, so obtain a written list of inclusions before scheduling work.
Care for the installed surfaces
Follow the care sheet supplied with the particular cabinet, top and basin. Dakota advises non-abrasive cleaners, avoiding solvents on its surfaces and keeping the bathroom ventilated to reduce prolonged humidity exposure. Do not assume a cleaner safe for ceramic is safe for a painted cabinet, engineered surface or hardware.
Dakota also states a maximum load of 200 lb for its own vanity bases. That figure applies to the specified Dakota products and is not a universal capacity for other cabinets. Keep heavy items distributed as the manufacturer directs, and never use a countertop as a step or seat unless its instructions explicitly allow it.

Troubleshoot the problems that appear after completion
The top rocks or the wall joint opens
Stop using the basin until the support and fit are checked. A rocking top can indicate an uneven cabinet, insufficient support or debris between surfaces. Remove and correct the underlying issue according to the product instructions rather than filling a structural gap with silicone.
A supply connection drips
Close the shutoff, dry the joint and identify whether the fitting uses a gasket, compression sleeve or another seal. Reassemble with the correct parts and alignment. If the valve, hose or pipe is damaged, replace the defective component instead of tightening indefinitely.
The drain leaks only when the basin empties
Inspect the drain flange, tailpiece and P-trap while running water. Gravity-side leaks often appear only during discharge. Check washer orientation and joint alignment, then retest with the cabinet emptied so a concealed drip cannot go unnoticed.
Drawers hit the plumbing
Do not cut a drawer or cabinet wall without confirming that the design permits it. Recheck the trap and supply routing, the cabinet’s adjustment system and the manufacturer’s modification limits. An installer may need to revise the plumbing or provide a compatible component.

When to call a professional
Use a qualified installer or plumber when the wall requires unusual anchoring, the existing plumbing must be relocated, shutoff valves do not work, the countertop needs drilling or cutting, or a leak persists after correct reassembly. Ask for the exact scope in writing, including preparation, installation, faucet work, countertop alterations, removal, disposal and testing. This prevents a “standard sink installation” from being mistaken for a complete vanity project.
