Google’s familiar multicolor G changed from four distinct color blocks to a continuous gradient, with red, yellow, green, and blue still in their usual positions. The change first drew attention as an update to the Google Search app icon in May 2025; a later report described broader use of the gradient design.

What changed in Google’s new G icon?
The G kept its recognizable shape and palette, but the edges between its red, yellow, green, and blue sections became blended transitions. In the earlier design, the colors appeared as solid, separate segments; in the newer treatment, they flow into one another as a gradient.

When did Google change its app icon?
BetaNews reported that the updated Search app icon began appearing in Apple’s App Store over the weekend before its May 13, 2025 article, and showed up on Google Play afterward. The report describes that sequence at the time; it does not establish when the icon became available to every user, country, device, or app version.
Did Google change its whole logo?
Not in the initial May report: BetaNews said the Search app’s G had changed while the wider Google logo had not. A later BetaNews topic-page result summarized a September 30, 2025 article as describing Google’s readiness to use the gradient G more broadly after a limited introduction. Because that evidence is a summary of a later report rather than an official Google announcement, it should not be read as confirmation of a complete company-wide rollout or of the Search icon’s appearance in every region and version. Why does the Google logo have a gradient?
The reports establish what changed and describe how the design spread, but they do not give Google’s official reason for adopting the gradient. There is no attributable statement from a Google representative or designer in the cited reporting, so claims that the redesign signals a particular strategy or purpose would go beyond what those sources establish.
