Blue and yellow paint usually make green. The exact green depends on the pigments and how much of each color you mix, so it may look bright, muted, warm, cool, or slightly brownish rather than like a single universal green.
Why blue and yellow paint make green
Paint is made from pigments that absorb some wavelengths of incoming light and reflect others back to your eyes. A blue pigment and a yellow pigment together commonly leave green wavelengths most visible, producing green paint. The National Gallery of Art presents the traditional painter’s equation as “Blue + Yellow = Green.”

San Diego State University notes that pigments absorb different portions of light and that the familiar schoolroom blue is often a greenish blue close to cyan. Those differences affect the green you see after mixing.
What changes the resulting green?
The pigments in the paints
Two tubes both labeled “blue” can contain different pigments, just as two yellows can have different undertones. A blue that leans toward cyan generally mixes differently from a blue that leans toward violet. Yellow paints also range from cool, lemon-like yellows to warmer, orange-leaning yellows. The combination can produce a vivid green, an earthy green, or a subdued olive-like color.

The proportions
Using more yellow usually makes the mixture look warmer and lighter; using more blue generally makes it cooler and darker. Add small amounts at a time because a little strong blue can change a yellow mixture quickly. A dull or shifted green is a normal result of real-world paint mixing, not evidence that the basic rule is wrong.
The paint and lighting conditions
Paper color, paint thickness, drying, and the light in the room can all change how the mixture appears. Compare samples under the same light if you are trying to reproduce a particular green.

Paint is not the same as colored light
The answer “green” applies to the everyday question about mixing blue and yellow paint or pigments. It does not describe every kind of color mixing. The National Gallery of Art distinguishes reflected color from the red, green, and blue system used by computer screens. The Art Institute of Chicago’s archived educational resource describes red, green, and blue as additive primaries for light, while pigment mixtures work subtractively.

A filter result is also not the same as mixing two tubes of blue and yellow paint. The materials and the way light reaches your eyes are different.

How to mix blue and yellow paint yourself
A simple activity needs the same basic materials listed in the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden’s “Red, Yellow, Blue – Mini Art Lesson”: blue and yellow paint, white paper, a brush, water, and newspaper or another surface protector.
- Protect your work area. Put down newspaper and place the paper on top.
- Make separate paint spots. Put a small amount of blue and a small amount of yellow on the paper or a palette.
- Combine them with a clean, damp brush. The Hirshhorn lesson’s instruction is direct: “Mix yellow and blue to make green.”
- Change the ratio. Make one sample with more yellow, one with more blue, and one with roughly equal amounts.
- Let the samples dry. Compare the dried colors under the same lighting and label which pigment and ratio produced each one.
This comparison shows why “green” is the correct general answer while still allowing several different greens in practice.

Common misunderstandings
“Any blue and any yellow must make the same green”
No. Color names cover a range of pigments, and their absorption properties differ. The label tells you the broad color family, not an exact mixing formula.
“Blue and yellow light should behave exactly like paint”
No. Paint is a subtractive material mixture; displays and other light sources use additive mixing. Keep the medium clear before predicting the result.

“A muddy green means the experiment failed”
Not necessarily. Complementary tendencies within the chosen pigments can reduce saturation. Try a different blue or yellow, or adjust the ratio, if you want a cleaner green.
