Mix red and orange paint and you get a hue in the red-orange range. Since orange already contains red in traditional pigment color-wheel teaching, adding more red shifts the mixture toward red. The exact shade depends on the pigments and how much of each you use; “vermilion” is a loose name for a familiar red-orange, not a guaranteed result.

Why red and orange paint make red-orange
Paint gets its color from the light its pigments reflect and the other parts of the illumination they absorb. When you mix pigments, the combined mixture changes which light is reflected. This is subtractive color mixing: the pigments absorb light rather than combining emitted light as colored lights do.

Traditional pigment color-wheel teaching treats orange as a secondary color made from red and yellow. Adding red to orange therefore moves the mixture toward a redder orange. The University of Wisconsin–Madison explains paint color in terms of reflected light, while OpenStax distinguishes subtractive pigment mixing from additive colored light.

What the finished color may look like
The result is not one standardized shade. Pigment properties and proportions affect the mixture, so one combination may look more red, while another stays closer to orange. Pigment mixtures also generally appear darker than their components because the combined pigments absorb more light.
- Hue: Is the mixture redder or more orange?
- Value: Does it look lighter or darker than the colors you started with?
- Chroma: Does it look vivid or more muted?
“Vermilion” is sometimes used as a familiar name for a red-orange hue. Treat it as a broad color description, not a precise paint formula: the name does not guarantee that every red-and-orange combination will produce the same shade.

How to mix red and orange paint
- Put a small amount of orange paint on a palette and set aside a little red.
- Add red to the orange gradually, mixing thoroughly after each addition.
- Compare the sample with the original colors. Add more red if you want it redder; stop when it reaches the balance you want.
There is no universal ratio for this mixture. Starting small and adjusting gradually is a practical way to account for differences between pigments and paint amounts; it is not a tested recipe for a particular brand or shade.

Colored light mixes additively, while pigments mix subtractively. A red-and-orange light or screen demonstration therefore cannot predict the exact appearance of physical paint. For a result you can use in a painting, judge a sample made with the paints themselves.
