Decor that reads as dated is usually a matter of context, scale, maintenance, or overuse—not proof that an object is “wrong.” The most useful fixes are often modest: lower a television, resize or layer a rug, simplify a window treatment, repaint a surface, or mix a new piece with things you already value.

Before replacing anything, check five practical questions: Is the scale right for the room? Is it comfortable and useful? Is the material easy to maintain? Will the proposed change require structural work or specialist installation? Does it fit your architecture and your taste? A trend list can identify a starting point, but it cannot answer those questions for your particular house.

Good Housekeeping designers make a similar case for measuring before buying, viewing paint or wallpaper samples in the actual room, and decorating gradually rather than purchasing a matching room in one trip. Layering furnishings and more than one type of light generally produces a more personal result than relying on a single coordinated set.
1. A television mounted high above the fireplace
A screen placed far above a mantel can make viewers tilt their heads upward, especially from a normal sofa. That is a comfort problem before it is a style problem. Check the viewing angle from the seats you actually use, not from the center of the room.
What to do instead
Diana Lombard of Diana Lombard Interiors suggests a swing-arm mount beside the fireplace. A properly selected arm can bring the screen forward and rotate it while preserving the fireplace as a separate focal point. Measure the television, wall construction, mantel clearance, and mount’s weight rating; installation must also keep wiring and heat exposure safe. If the current position is comfortable and the fireplace is used safely, there is no obligation to move it simply because a trend list dislikes it.

Short café curtains can look deliberately nostalgic, but Christopher Boutlier cautions against using them indiscriminately. Curtains that stop at an awkward point can visually shorten a wall and make a window treatment feel thematic rather than architectural.
What to do instead
Use a restrained treatment that suits the window’s proportions, or leave the glass bare when privacy and glare do not require coverage. Hang full-length panels at a height and width that frame the window rather than crowd it. For a café curtain you love, keep the style where it serves a purpose—such as privacy at a street-facing kitchen window—instead of repeating it throughout the house.
3. Matching furniture sets
Identical tones, finishes, and silhouettes can make a room feel flat and impersonal, according to Ashley Hauza of Hauza Studio. A complete suite also makes it difficult to accommodate a future heirloom, a repaired piece, or a better-fitting chair.

Build a collected mix
Keep one or two coordinating elements, then vary material, color, pattern, and shape. Pair a wood table with upholstered or painted seating; combine contemporary lighting with an older cabinet; or introduce one patterned textile rather than replacing every neutral. Buy gradually, as Good Housekeeping’s designers recommend, so each addition solves a real need and has room to work with what is already there.
4. A tiny area rug
“Too small of a rug can actually make the room feel smaller and out of balance,” says Nancy Evars, interior designer and founder of Evars Collective. When a rug floats in the middle of a seating group, the furniture can appear disconnected.
Choose between replacing and layering
| Approach | Best when | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Replace with a larger rug | You want one unified seating area and have clearance for a larger footprint. | Measure the seating group, door swings, vents, and walkways. At minimum, the front legs of the seating should rest on the rug. |
| Layer the existing rug | You like the small rug or cannot replace it yet. | Place a relatively flat, neutral jute or sisal rug beneath it; secure layers so edges do not curl or slide. |
Do not sacrifice a safe passage or block a door to meet a sizing rule. The goal is visual connection and comfortable circulation.
5. An all-gray interior
Gray flooring, cabinetry, walls, tile, and counters used together can read as dull, Becky Wright of the Sorry Girls says. That does not make every gray finish a mistake; undertone, daylight, texture, and the age of the materials matter.
Bring back contrast without a full remodel
White paint is one flexible route when the existing gray surfaces are sound. Test samples at different times of day because whites can shift noticeably in north- or south-facing light. If repainting is not practical, add pattern with peel-and-stick wallpaper on a suitable, properly prepared surface. Architectural Digest cited a Klarna report of a 92% increase in peel-and-stick wallpaper purchases, particularly in jewel tones and patterns, but the article did not state the year, baseline, methodology, or provide a direct report; treat that figure as an unverified trend citation, not current market data.
6. Carpeted stairs
Original stair carpet can become visibly worn or difficult to keep hygienic. Kelsey MacDermaid of the Sorry Girls lists removing it and painting, staining, or adding a runner as alternatives; replacing worn carpet is also reasonable when a complete update is not possible.

Match the finish to the staircase
Removing carpet exposes the condition of the treads and risers. Paint can be a practical, graphic treatment; stain highlights suitable wood; a runner preserves warmth and traction while reducing the visual mass of wall-to-wall carpet. Before stripping anything, confirm that the stairs can meet local safety requirements for slip resistance, tread depth, and edge visibility. Account for the labor of removing staples, repairing surfaces, and installing a secure runner—not just the visible finish.
7. Marble used where kitchen work is demanding
Cathy Purple Cherry of Purple Cherry Architects notes that marble can etch and stain in a kitchen or wine-bar setting. Etching is a change to the polished surface caused by acids; staining is discoloration. Neither means the stone is unusable, but both require an owner who accepts visible patina and ongoing care.
Compare alternatives by maintenance, not fashion
Granite, quartzite, and quartz are the alternatives she names as more durable choices for these applications. The source does not compare particular products or provide test ratings. Ask a fabricator about the exact slab, sealing schedule, heat and stain guidance, edge details, and repair options. If you already own marble and like its character, use cutting boards, wipe spills promptly, and follow the installer’s care instructions rather than replacing it solely to avoid a trend label.

8. A tan exterior that feels tied to an earlier period
The designers quoted by Architectural Digest associate some tan exteriors with earlier decorating periods. That is a contextual judgment: local architecture, roof color, masonry, and neighboring homes can make tan entirely appropriate.
Refresh selectively
A fresh coat of paint may be enough, and changing only the front door can update the approach without repainting the whole exterior. Kevin Lenhart of Yardzen says clients request black, charcoal, navy, and dusty dark blue. Sample colors on several elevations and observe them in sun and shade; confirm compatibility with the siding, masonry, and any homeowners-association rules. A door-only project is more reversible and less disruptive than a full exterior repaint.
9. Gaudy hardware and oversized light fixtures
Oversized pulls and bathroom mini chandeliers can dominate a room when their scale or ornament does not relate to the cabinetry, ceiling, or other fixtures. The issue is proportion, not a ban on decorative hardware.

Reduce visual noise
Try simpler pulls or knobs whose length suits the drawer or door, and consider sconces where a chandelier crowds a small bathroom. Lizzie McGraw says a new sconce can change a bathroom; the effect depends on placement, light quality, and the existing electrical box. Verify mounting, wiring, damp-location ratings, and the fixture’s clearance from water. Reuse sound hardware elsewhere in the house before buying a complete replacement.
10. Pretentious curtains, valances, and fringe
Overdone treatments can obscure a good view and make a room feel stuck in a previous decade. The article gives removing 1990s valances and fringe as an example, while its broader advice is to simplify when a window needs treatment.
Keep only what the window needs
Decide whether the requirement is privacy, glare control, insulation, or softness. A clean shade, unlined panel, or no treatment may solve that need with less visual weight. Preserve a more elaborate treatment when it belongs to the architecture or serves a real functional purpose; remove decorative layers first, then reassess the room before ordering anything new.
11. Mirrored closet doors
Mirrored sliding doors are strongly associated with 1980s interiors, but they can still make a small room feel larger and provide a useful full-length reflection. Function and condition should determine whether they stay.
Know the renovation trade-off
French, pocket, bifold, or updated sliding doors are possible alternatives. Each changes clearance, hardware, framing, and sometimes the track or opening size. Pocket doors need wall space for the pocket; bifolds need room to fold; hinged French doors need swing clearance. Get measurements and a renovation estimate before removing a working system, and consider replacing only damaged panels or hardware if the layout is otherwise effective.
12. Ancient or failing appliances
The distinction is between intentional vintage and equipment that is weathered, unreliable, or no longer safe. A well-maintained vintage range can be a deliberate focal point; a nonworking built-in microwave is simply an obstacle.

Update safely
Architectural Digest notes that painting a refrigerator can be a DIY update and that replacing a nonworking built-in microwave may be appropriate. Do not paint an appliance until the manufacturer’s instructions and product-safety guidance confirm that the surface, heat exposure, ventilation, and electrical components can be treated safely. For replacements, measure the opening, confirm ventilation and electrical requirements, and plan for disposal or recycling. A cosmetic refresh makes sense only when the appliance functions reliably.
13. Large torch lamps with open tops
Freestanding torch lamps can cast useful ambient light, but open fixtures collect dust and dead insects and may look oversized beside low furniture. The concern is maintenance and proportion as much as appearance.
Use controlled, layered light
Cathy Purple Cherry recommends sealed fixtures; closed or downward-facing lamps are alternatives. Combine ceiling, task, and accent sources so one tall lamp does not have to illuminate the entire room. Check the fixture’s stability, bulb wattage, cord placement, and clearance from curtains before moving it. A smaller lamp at sofa height may improve reading light while reducing glare.

A practical order for updating a dated-looking room
- Fix comfort and safety first. Address a high viewing angle, slippery stairs, exposed wiring, unstable lighting, or an appliance that no longer works.
- Correct scale. Measure the rug and seating relationship, curtain height, fixture size, and door clearances before shopping.
- Remove excess. Test the room without valances, fringe, duplicate patterns, or one oversized fixture.
- Use paint and rearrangement before replacement. A new wall or door color, a different furniture layout, or a layered rug can change the room without demolition.
- Add variation deliberately. Mix old and new, vary materials, and layer lighting while repeating one or two colors to keep the result coherent.
- Buy only after sampling. View paint, wallpaper, fabric, and flooring samples in the actual light; measure the route into the room as well as the final location.
Updating can support a future sale, but it is not a guaranteed financial return. Eugene Colberg, principal of Colberg Architecture, says, “Updates to a house can maximize value when placing the home on the market.” That is his professional opinion, not a proven resale dataset. For expensive or structural changes, consult a qualified designer, architect, contractor, or electrician who can assess your specific home.
What the trend signals do—and do not—prove
Color and purchasing anecdotes can be interesting without being universal instructions. The same Architectural Digest article cites Klarna figures showing more than 100% growth in sales of pink and green curtains during the first two weeks of January. It does not state the year, baseline, methodology, or direct report, so the number cannot establish a current market trend or tell you which color belongs in your room. Choose finishes for the light, architecture, maintenance, and people using the space.
