Instagram’s official brand typeface is Instagram Sans, introduced in the company’s 2022 visual refresh. But that is not a single-font explanation for everything on Instagram: the wordmark is custom brand artwork, Story and Reel text comes from changing in-app styles, and interface text may vary by platform and settings.

Instagram’s official brand typeface is Instagram Sans
Instagram introduced Instagram Sans on May 23, 2022, as part of a visual identity refresh. The custom typeface was developed with Colophon Foundry and other type specialists. Instagram described it as drawing on the rounded geometry of its logo and wordmark, including forms between circles and squares—the “squircle” shape associated with the brand. Instagram’s announcement of its brand evolution
The announcement identified three principal styles:
#1 Best Overall
- Instagram Sans Regular for general use.
- Instagram Sans Headline for more expressive display text.
- Instagram Sans Condensed for a narrower treatment.
Instagram described the family as designed for global use, with adaptations for scripts including Arabic, Thai and Japanese. That multilingual aim is part of the typeface’s design; it does not mean every language or every screen necessarily renders in Instagram Sans.
What “Instagram font” means in different places
| What you are looking at | Best answer |
|---|---|
| Instagram’s current brand typography | Instagram Sans |
| The Instagram wordmark or logo | Custom brand artwork associated with the identity system, not simply a word typed in a font |
| Text added in Stories or Reels | Styles available in Instagram’s in-app text tools; options can change |
| App menus, labels or other interface text | Not safely reducible to one universal font |
| An older script-style Instagram logo | Historical branding; Billabong is a commonly reported association, not a confirmed current font |
Is the Instagram logo written in Instagram Sans?
Instagram Sans belongs to the same brand system as the wordmark, but the wordmark should be treated as custom logo artwork rather than ordinary editable text. A typeface may inform a logo’s design without being a ready-made substitute for the finished mark. The 2022 refresh paired the new typeface with a refined logo system. Typing “Instagram” in Instagram Sans—or in a similar font—will not automatically reproduce the official proportions, spacing, letterforms or logo artwork. For accurate branding, use authorized logo assets rather than reconstructing the wordmark from text.
What font does Instagram use in Stories and Reels?
Instagram’s 2022 announcement said the community could use Instagram Sans in Stories, and Instagram head Adam Mosseri also described the typeface as usable in Stories and Reels. Mosseri’s announcement In practice, the text composer offers selectable styles and treatments, but the exact names and choices are not a permanent universal list. They can vary with app version, platform, language, account and rollout.
- Open Instagram and start a Story or Reel.
- Choose the text tool, commonly marked Aa.
- Cycle through the styles available in your composer and preview them on your content.
- Select the closest suitable treatment. If you need the exact style in your own app, use the in-app option rather than assuming an external font file is identical.
Labels such as Classic, Modern, Neon, Typewriter and Strong have been associated with Instagram’s text tools, but that list should not be treated as a current, exhaustive menu for every device or account.
Does the whole Instagram app use Instagram Sans?
Instagram Sans is the official brand typeface, not proof that every label, caption, menu or button is rendered in it. A screenshot can combine Instagram interface text, user-entered text, text embedded in an image, Story-editor text or material created in another app. Those are different sources and may use different fonts.
Interface appearance can also vary with the device, operating system, browser, language, accessibility settings, app version and staged product changes. Instagram’s Help Center notes that text-size adjustments can depend on device or browser settings. Instagram Help Center: changing text size It is therefore not reliable to identify the font in every Instagram screenshot as one specific typeface.
What font did Instagram use before Instagram Sans?
Instagram Sans dates from the 2022 identity refresh; it should not be applied retroactively to earlier logos. A useful high-level timeline is:

- 2016–2022: Instagram used a simplified wordmark and the gradient-camera identity.
- 2022 onward: Instagram introduced Instagram Sans alongside a refreshed visual identity.
Even when a historical mark resembles a commercially available typeface, the finished wordmark may be customized artwork rather than the unmodified font.

Instagram’s cited design announcement explains the typeface but does not establish a public download package or grant an unrestricted commercial license. Unless Meta or Instagram publishes an explicit license for the file you intend to use, treat Instagram Sans as a proprietary brand typeface. For Instagram content, the in-app text styles are the straightforward option; for external design work, choose a font with a license that covers your use.
Be cautious of unofficial downloads labeled “Instagram Sans.” A file may be mislabeled, incomplete or modified, and a download page may not establish permission to use it. Use official Instagram assets for the logo and properly licensed fonts for other projects.
Alternatives that can approximate Instagram Sans
These are alternatives for a similar broad feel, not fonts used by Instagram and not exact replacements. Check each family’s current license and script coverage for your project.
| Typeface | Useful for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Inter | Free, open-source interface text and social graphics | Highly legible, but less distinctive and expressive than Instagram Sans Headline |
| Manrope | A softer geometric look in graphics and branding | Contemporary and rounded in feel, but not a replica; verify language coverage for your needs |
| Mona Sans | Flexible modern branding and interface work | Has its own letterforms and personality |
| Proxima Nova | Professional marketing and brand work | Commercial licensing; similar in broad category, not the Instagram typeface |
| Avenir Next | Premium geometric/humanist branding | Commercial licensing and visibly different details |
For multilingual interface work, compare verified script coverage rather than choosing on Latin-letter appearance alone. Adobe Fonts can help subscribers explore licensed alternatives, but its catalog does not establish that Instagram Sans itself is available. For social graphics made without desktop typography software, Canva is an option; its font availability does not make any substitute identical to Instagram Sans. If you are examining text embedded in an image, Fontspring Matcherator can suggest possibilities, but a visual match cannot prove which font Instagram used.
Quick Recap
How to get an Instagram-like result
- For Story or Reel text: Start with Instagram’s own editor and select the available treatment closest to the look you want.
- For external graphics: Try a licensed rounded or geometric sans serif such as Manrope, or a highly readable family such as Inter; adjust weight, spacing and line breaks to suit the design.
- For the logo: Use authorized brand artwork. Re-creating it with a substitute font will not produce the official mark.
