What Happened to Kristi Linauer’s Vanity Drawer Fronts—and the Calculator Mix-Up

A calculator-entry mistake made Kristi Linauer’s vanity center drawer front about an inch too wide. Here is the layout math, walnut frame construction and the practical recovery lesson.

The big mistake in Kristi Linauer’s vanity-drawer-front project was a repeated calculator entry error: she used the wrong width for both side fronts when working out the center front. That made the center piece about an inch too wide. It was frustrating, but not catastrophic; Linauer said the parts could be trimmed and the vanity remained on track.

Her August 16, 2022 progress update is useful because it shows exactly how a small number copied incorrectly can travel through an otherwise careful cabinet layout. The dimensions below describe her bathroom vanity, not a universal cabinet standard.

The mistake was in the calculator, not the woodworking

Linauer’s written plan called for two equal side drawer fronts. When she repeatedly calculated the remaining space for the center false drawer front, however, she entered 7.25 inches instead of the planned 7.75 inches. Because the side-front width was subtracted twice, the error added roughly one inch to the calculated center width.

That distinction matters. The frames were not ruined by a failed miter, a bad rabbet or an unusable piece of walnut. The layout arithmetic was wrong before the center front was completed. Linauer described the result as a setback that could be corrected by trimming, costing time and a couple of inches of material rather than ending the project.

This is her account of her own build; the measurements and outcome have not been independently tested or verified.

Reconstructing the planned layout

Linauer described a front opening 39.5 inches wide. Her plan reserved a small clearance at each outside end, two equal side fronts and a narrow gap on each side of the center false front. The arithmetic can be represented as follows:

Layout element Planned value How it was used
Total opening 39.5 inches Available width across the vanity front
Outside clearances 1/16 inch at each end Two end allowances, 1/8 inch combined
Side fronts 7.75 inches each Two equal fronts, 15.5 inches combined
Gaps beside center 1/8 inch each Two gaps, 1/4 inch combined
Calculated center-front width 23 5/8 inches 39.5 − 1/8 − 15.5 − 1/4

Using 7.25 inches for each side front instead changes the subtraction by one inch in total. The remaining center opening therefore becomes about 24 5/8 inches instead of 23 5/8 inches. That is why the center front came out approximately an inch too wide.

Why a half-inch entry error becomes a one-inch part error

The side dimension appears twice in the layout. A half-inch mistake on the left side and the same half-inch mistake on the right side produce a one-inch difference in the space left for the center. This is a common pattern in symmetrical layouts: an error in one repeated component is multiplied by the number of times that component appears.

A calculator does not know whether a number is a finished-front width, a rough blank width or a clearance. It simply returns a precise-looking result. Writing the formula in a notebook or on the cut list makes the repeated terms visible:

center width = opening − left clearance − right clearance − side front − side front − gap − gap

For a project with mirrored parts, labeling each term before entering it is safer than typing a row of bare numbers. The labels also make it easier to check the result against the physical cabinet before cutting.

How Linauer built the drawer-front frames

The fronts were made from walnut. Linauer cut 3/4-inch-square walnut pieces, rabbetted them and mitered four pieces for each frame. A rabbet removes material to create a recess, while the four miters join the frame corners at an angle. Those operations describe the frame construction; they do not establish the species grade, moisture content, supplier or exact tool setup.

Before completing the centers, she used veneer pieces taped into the frames to preview the appearance. This was a practical visual check: it allowed her to see the walnut frame-and-center arrangement at the vanity rather than judging small samples on a workbench. Veneer in the preview should not be interpreted as a documented specification for thickness, backing or final finish, because Linauer did not identify those details.

Why the oversized center could be salvaged

Linauer said the center pieces could be trimmed. A drawer front that is too wide can often be reduced if enough material remains to preserve the intended reveal, the frame geometry and the visual alignment with neighboring fronts. The exact amount that can be removed depends on where the excess is located and how the frame was joined.

Check the physical opening before cutting again

  1. Measure the actual opening at several points and record the smallest reading. Cabinets are not always perfectly square, and a nominal opening can differ from the top, middle and bottom measurements.
  2. Confirm the planned reveals and gaps with spacers or a dry layout. Keep the intended clearance visible instead of relying on memory.
  3. Mark the excess on the front itself, then mark the same reference on the back. This reduces the chance of trimming the wrong edge.
  4. Remove material in controlled passes, checking the fit after each pass. Once a front is undersized, the lost width cannot be restored without rebuilding or adding material.
  5. Recheck the frame corners and veneer alignment after trimming. A correction that fixes the width but shifts the visual center is not a complete correction.

Those are general cabinetmaking precautions, not a report of steps Linauer documented in her post. Her stated outcome was that trimming could save the pieces.

A reliable calculation workflow for multiple drawer fronts

For a similar vanity, separate the design into three numbers: the opening, the clearances and the finished front widths. Do not begin with the stock size of the lumber; begin with the space the fronts must cover.

1. Measure the opening

Measure width and height at more than one location. Note whether the measurement is inside the cabinet opening, between face-frame members or across an overlay area. Use the actual construction reference consistently throughout the calculation.

2. Decide the reveal scheme

Write down every outside clearance and every gap between adjacent fronts. A 1/16-inch end reveal and a 1/8-inch inter-front gap are different allowances and should not be combined mentally.

  • Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.

3. List repeated parts separately

If two side fronts are equal, write the width twice or write “2 × side front.” This makes the multiplication visible and helps catch a value copied from an earlier draft.

4. Solve for the unknown front

Subtract all known clearances and finished fronts from the opening. Then check the result by adding every component back together. The sum should equal the opening, subject to the intended reveals.

5. Compare the result with the material plan

Only after the finished dimensions are checked should you decide how wide to cut blanks, where to place miters and how much extra stock to leave for milling. A blank is not the same thing as a finished front.

What the completed vanity adds to the story

In a follow-on post showing the finished vanity, Linauer reported that the drawers used full-extension, soft-close slides and provided 18 inches of drawer depth. She did not identify a slide brand or model, so those details should be treated as a hardware category and a reported depth, not as a product recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Full extension means the drawer can travel far enough for the cabinet interior to become accessible. Soft-close hardware adds a damping mechanism that slows the final part of the closing motion. The useful fit questions for another project are the cabinet’s internal width, the slide’s required side clearance, the drawer-box length and the manufacturer’s mounting instructions. None of those additional specifications were given for Linauer’s vanity.

Linauer also said she had installed the pulls before applying clear coat. The posts do not identify the pulls’ maker, design or finish. Installing hardware before coating can make it easier to handle a finished-looking front during the build, but it also requires protecting the hardware from drips and overspray; the appropriate sequence depends on the finish system and the maker’s process.

Project dimensions are not cabinet standards

The 39.5-inch opening, 7.75-inch side fronts, 1/16-inch end allowances, 1/8-inch gaps and 18-inch drawer depth belong to this particular vanity. They should not be copied into another cabinet without measuring it. Face-frame construction, frameless construction, overlay choices, drawer-box dimensions and slide clearances can all change the required front size.

The same caution applies to the 3/4-inch-square walnut stock and the veneer preview. They describe Linauer’s material approach, not a minimum thickness or a universal recipe for vanity fronts. A different species, panel construction or finish schedule may require different allowances.

A compact pre-cut checklist

  • Write the opening measurement at the top of the cut sheet.
  • List every outside reveal and every gap as its own line item.
  • Mark repeated dimensions with an explicit multiplier.
  • Perform the calculation once from left to right and once by adding the proposed parts back together.
  • Use a story stick, spacers or a dry layout to verify the visual spacing.
  • Leave safe trimming stock only where the joint and grain direction allow it.
  • Label blanks, finished dimensions and final cut dimensions separately.
  • Test drawer-slide fit against the actual cabinet and drawer box before drilling mounting holes.

The useful lesson from the “big mistake”

Linauer’s update is encouraging precisely because the error was ordinary. A repeated wrong entry created a visibly oversized center front, but the project still had a recovery path. The safeguard is not a more complicated formula; it is a slower handoff between the measuring tape, the written plan and the calculator.

For anyone laying out vanity drawer fronts, the strongest habit is to make every repeated dimension explicit, verify the total against the opening and dry-fit the visual arrangement before committing to the final center pieces. That process catches a small transcription error while it is still inexpensive to fix.
