A sculpture is a three-dimensional work of visual art with height, width, and depth. It occupies physical space and may be carved, modeled, cast, hammered, constructed, or assembled. Sculpture can represent people and objects, or it can be entirely abstract; its material, scale, surface, and relationship to a viewer all help create meaning.
What makes something a sculpture?
The defining feature of sculpture is three-dimensional form. Unlike an image that represents depth on a flat surface, a sculpture has physical volume and exists in the same space as its audience. You can often walk around it, look into it, or experience how its silhouette changes from different positions.
The National Gallery of Art describes sculpture as “the most obvious place to see form, or three-dimensional shape, in art.” Form includes the work’s mass, voids, contours, proportions, texture, and balance. Light also behaves differently on a sculptural surface: it reveals edges, recesses, projections, and changes in texture as the light or viewer moves.
Sculpture is not required to depict a recognizable subject. A carved figure, an abstract geometric construction, a cast animal, a relief on a wall, and an installation made from everyday objects can all be sculpture.

How is sculpture different from painting?
| Aspect | Sculpture | Painting |
|---|---|---|
| Physical dimensions | Has height, width, and depth; occupies actual space. | Primarily occupies a flat surface, even when it creates an illusion of depth. |
| Viewpoint | Often changes as the viewer moves around, above, or through it. | Usually presents a principal viewing plane. |
| Light and shadow | Real light falls across physical surfaces and openings. | Light and shadow are generally represented with pigment or other surface marks. |
| Materials | May use stone, wood, clay, wax, metal, plaster, wire, textiles, found objects, and mixed media. | Usually applies pigment or another image-making medium to a support such as canvas, panel, paper, or wall. |
| Viewer’s relationship | Scale, distance, bodily movement, and the surrounding space can be part of the work. | Viewing is commonly centered on the image’s surface, although painting can also become part of an architectural or installation environment. |
The distinction is useful but not absolute. Contemporary artists combine painting, objects, architecture, light, sound, and performance, so a work may operate across traditional categories.
What are the main types of sculpture?
Freestanding sculpture
Freestanding, or sculpture in the round, is made to be viewed from more than one side. Its back, sides, top, and underside may all contribute to the design. A figure on a pedestal and an abstract form in a gallery are common examples.
Relief sculpture
Relief is attached to or emerges from a background plane. In a low relief, forms project only slightly; in a high relief, they project more dramatically and may approach freestanding form. Relief can be carved, modeled, cast, or constructed for walls, doors, monuments, coins, and architectural surfaces.

Constructed and assembled sculpture
Constructed sculpture joins separate parts rather than shaping one continuous block. Assemblage uses found or manufactured objects arranged into a three-dimensional composition, functioning as a sculptural counterpart to collage. Welding, fastening, stitching, tying, and stacking can all be construction methods.
Installation and site-responsive sculpture
Some sculpture is designed for a particular room, landscape, or public setting. Its meaning may depend on the path a visitor takes, the architecture around it, or the scale of the site. In such work, space is not merely a container; it is part of the medium.
Abstract and figurative sculpture
Figurative sculpture refers to recognizable bodies, animals, objects, or places. Abstract sculpture may simplify, distort, or eliminate recognizable references, emphasizing geometry, organic shapes, rhythm, balance, or the relationship between solid material and empty space.

Which materials do sculptors use?
Material affects what can be made, how a surface reflects light, how long a work lasts, and what associations it carries. Traditional materials include stone, wood, clay, wax, plaster, bronze, and other metals. Modern and contemporary artists also use wire, latex, cotton, paint, plastics, industrial materials, and found objects.

- Wood: Relatively light and workable, with grain that can become part of the image or surface.
- Clay: Soft while wet and suitable for detailed modeling; it can remain unfired, be fired as terracotta, or serve as a model for casting.
- Wax: Easily shaped and often used for modeling or as a pattern that will later be cast in metal.
- Plaster: Useful for modeling, making molds, and producing casts, though it is generally less durable than many metals or stones.
- Metal: Bronze, steel, aluminum, and other metals may be cast, welded, cut, forged, or hammered.
- Fibers and flexible materials: Wire, textiles, cotton, latex, and related materials can create line, tension, softness, transparency, or movement.
- Found objects and mixed media: Existing items bring their prior uses and cultural associations into an assembled work.
How is sculpture made?
Carving: removing material
Carving is a subtractive process. The artist starts with a block or piece of material and removes parts with chisels, other metal tools, saws, files, and abrasives. Stone and wood are common carving materials. Because removed material usually cannot be restored easily, the process demands planning as well as responsive decisions while the form emerges.
Modeling: building a form
Modeling is an additive process. The artist builds and manipulates a soft substance such as clay or wax, pressing, pinching, coiling, scraping, and smoothing it into shape. A wire or wooden armature may support the form. Clay models can be fired into terracotta or used as originals for molds and casts.

Molding and casting: reproducing a form
In molding and casting, an artist first makes a mold around an original form. The mold may be made from plaster, clay, gelatin, silicone, or another material. A liquid or workable material is then placed inside and allowed to harden, producing a cast. The process can create one or multiple versions, depending on the mold and the artist’s intent.
Hammering and repoussé: shaping metal
Thin metal can be shaped by striking it from the front or back. Repoussé raises a design by pushing or hammering metal outward from the reverse side; related techniques refine the surface from the front. These methods are especially associated with relief and vessel-like forms.

Construction and assemblage: joining parts
Construction combines separate pieces through welding, screws, adhesives, wire, stitching, or other connections. Assemblage specifically incorporates found or preexisting objects, allowing their scale, wear, function, and cultural meaning to remain visible.

Surface treatment: color and finish
Surface treatment can change how a sculpture is read without changing its underlying structure. Polychromy applies color with paint, glaze, or gold leaf. Patinas alter the appearance of metal, while polishing, roughening, burnishing, or leaving tool marks visible changes how light and touch are perceived.
How should you look at a sculpture?
Begin by observing before interpreting. Notice where the work is solid and where it is open, then consider how its parts balance and direct your attention.
- Move around it: Check whether the silhouette, focal point, or apparent proportions change from different sides.
- Assess scale: Compare the work with your body, nearby architecture, or other objects. Monumental scale can suggest authority, while intimate scale can invite close, private attention.
- Study material and surface: Look for grain, seams, tool marks, fingerprints, polish, corrosion, fabric, or paint. Ask whether the finish conceals or emphasizes the making process.
- Examine solid and empty space: Openings, gaps, shadows, and the space beneath or between forms can be as active as the material itself.
- Consider color and light: Determine whether color is inherent to the material, applied later, or produced by reflected and changing light.
- Locate the work: A sculpture’s pedestal, wall, floor, landscape, or surrounding architecture may shape how it is understood.
- Ask what your body is expected to do: Stand still, circle the work, approach closely, look upward, pass through it, or view it from a distance.
These observations connect formal features to meaning without assuming that every sculpture has one fixed interpretation.
A concise way to define sculpture
Sculpture is three-dimensional visual art made by shaping, removing, casting, hammering, constructing, or assembling material in physical space. Its subjects may be figurative or abstract, and its meaning arises not only from what it depicts but also from material, process, scale, surface, color, light, and the viewer’s movement around it.
